I don't do crops outside my house, as I have the PERFECT scrapbook room to enjoy at home!
I would like to comment, however, that my husband does take me to conventions and drops me off, or stays in the hotel room or just does his own thing.
I have been married for 26 years and he is the best thing on this earth. He encourages me to buy what I want and also what I need. He never says no to anything I am working on. He is the greatest and always excited to see what I have bought or created.
I disagree with the women who are bashing the ladies, including myself, about their husbands being around.
I had a friend who ALWAYS said her best friend was her husband. They did everything together whether it was her thing or his. About 6 months later he was killed in a tornado. She lost her best friend.
I cherish my time with my best friend and thoroughly enjoy his company more than a friend could ever. We have lots of fun together.
So, if you enjoy your husband and like him to take you to and from your activities, I say go for it and snub the others who are jealous they don't have the support and best friendship we do in our husbands!
I will get off my soap box now. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in.
Well, aren't you just precious??!! No one is jealous of you. You really need to get over yourself. The thing about crops is they are generally a woman thing - pretty much like the quilting bee of old. Women have historically bonded in groups over their work and their craft. Having a dude there upsets the apple cart - especially given the conduct of many a husband or wife. Personally, I'm not interested in you canoodling your husband or him feeling he has to gush over your LOs --its just unseemly.
I find any twosome bound at the hip to be suspect anyway. A real "best" friend not only knows their place, but they allow the other their space. Surely, you let him have poker night with the guys without sitting there gushing over his hands, right?
I bet you both are a hoot at all the neighborhood PartyLite parties too. Good on you.

I would love it if just once, the "gal pal" types would show up here and share their side of things. Or the Bruschetta chicks. I would definitely love to hear from them.
I haven't read all the posts...but have laughed enough and *GASP*, recognized my obnoxious self in a few! (although I'm not the ACTUAL offender!). A couple of years ago, I went to a weekend crop retreat alone and asked the crop organizer to introduce me to some "FUN" ladies, as I didn't want to go eat alone. Well, it happened to be at a beach resort...and next thing I know, we're at a bar drinking beer and eating oysters....then we're in the bathroom putting our bra's on the OUTSIDE of our clothes and returning to the crop like that! I'm sure the other croppers didn't appreciate our state (although, I do think my pale blue lace bra looked lovely over my scrapbook bug t-shirt! Thank goodness I had on one of my Victoria's Secret pretty ones that night! LOL) and my pages that evening were LESS than artistic! My apologies to anybody who witnessed this behavior! |

I have been hosting crops and retreats for over 10 years. I have a huge weekend event in March and October and 50-75% of the ladies are in the 'core group' and have been coming for years...the rest are made up of ladies who either hear about it via word of mouth or met me at a CKC event. People come from FL, VA, GA, TN and the Carolinas. The event itself is maybe 1/2 an hour from my home so I sometimes have my husband come and bring items that were forgotten or pick something up for a cropper who has a need and is not local.
Many years back my husband had come to bring allergy medication and something else for two other croppers from VA. I'd made a big announcement that he was going to be there in one hour and I could call him and add whatever anyone wanted to the shopping list, but he'd be unable to do any other 'runs' as he was going to the mountains with our boys directly from the retreat. When he called from the drug store I did another announcement and said he could add anything...just let me know. One woman ( a first timer who said she saw a flyer at an LSS I've never been to) asked me if he charged extra for delivery and I replied "Absolutely not, what can he bring for you?" and she said nothing and sat down. I thought it was weird...but oh well...and got back to preparing the big dessert bar we were having that night.
My husband comes, delivers the items, I check in about the things he has for the boys and himself and wish him well on his drive and he leaves. TWO HOURS LATER this woman says "Yeah, I've decided your husband can go get me blah blah blah." I was hoping she'd said something different so I very politely said "I'm sorry--what was that?" and she repeats her sentence verbatim. I tell her my husband and children are two hours away, that he was the man who came and delivered the items earlier and now he is too far away and won't be back until Monday (it is Friday night). SHE FLIPPED OUT ON ME!
She became enraged, swore at me and said I never said anything about there being a time limit and so forth. How, exactly, was she supposed to find her way around town to buy things she REALLY needed for the weekend. I asked her what she needed and perhaps we had some on hand and could help her out and worst case, there was a Super Target less than 10 minutes away on the main road...NOT hard to find. Then she lit into me about having to know her personal business and I reminded her that she would have had to tell me in order to have my husband pick them up and she got completely nutso again. She made several of the ladies VERY uncomfortable and I ended up having to ask her to leave. I had security escort her out because I wasn't completely sure she wouldn't do something to the cars or the buildings before she left. NUTCAKE!!!!
My next *good time* centers around my Croptoberfest retreat about 8 years ago. My max price, with room, food and a full 6x3 table is 160. By paying early, referring folks and being a repeat customer I have people who pay as little as 125. My sign-up sheets are all done on Word and I send them out to a LOT of folks and they get passed along via email.
Each year I give a big grand prize. This year it is a Wishblade, last year a Design Runner and several disks...nice prizes, in my opinion. That year there wasn't anything that really rang my bell so I offered a refund of their retreat fee to one lucky attendee. I drew the name of a woman who had come with a group of 7 ladies, which meant the core person in that group had already come for free, but I was still giving her back the full amount she paid. She had been registered as a 160.00 person and I handed her the cash. She smiled sat down, apparently counted it and came back and said she was short 65$. I had gone to the bank and gotten fresh bills and kept them in the prize envelope so I am thinking there is NO WAY it was short...and there wasn't any possible way it could be a '5' at the end, so I said "You didn't get 160 in your prize envelope?" and she said "Yes, I did, but 'X' charged me 225 and said that was the fee for the retreat". Not only had the woman come for free, but she actually made 65 off her *friends*. Let me say...it was an UGLY day when I produced a copy of the check she had written me and it clearly showed the 160 per person...AND she had altered the form she sent them, but changed it when she sent it back to me. So now as a matter of business I contact each scrapper personally and verify the price paid, the group they are in and so forth. OY FLIPPING VEY!!!
But I do love my two retreats and my monthly crops at my studio...they are extremely fun 99% of the time!
I have others...but I'll save those fun gems for when this needs another BTT. |

What tickled me about this line was "the" rabbit. As if, you know, every crop has a rabbit right?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You mean there aren't? hehehe
This made me laugh! We have four bunnies and one of them is pretty much a dog in rabbit fur...comes when called, curls up to sleep and loves to be pet. He'll sit for a LONG time and let someone love on him. I do NOT let him out and about when entertaining.
One night, however, my son came home with his bun, and went to put him in his cage and a woman who was over and cropping (it was my semi-annual slumber crop where we take over the first floor and there are about a dozen tables set up for cropping) went bananas over him and had to pet and hold him (the bunny, not my son) and at some point she put him down and never mentioned it to anyone.
I figured my son had the bun, he figured I had the bun. Anyway...two hours later I go to lay down on the LR sofa and catnap before the next prize drawing and my solid black sofa has a white and black bunny fast asleep on it. McGregor had hopped up and taken a nap of his own, assumably because the stairs were blocked and he could not get up to my son.
But we don't let him walk about and poop--he knows to use the litter box! Maybe every crop SHOULD have a bunny, they sure make people smile. |

invited to a CM "but you can scrap your stuff" crop - it was at a DENNY'S restaurant!!!
Nothing was ever said about kids being invited either. So combine patty melts, drinks on the same table as our albums, kids screaming "mommy, mommy" and my friend and I who were very much NOT CM scrappers getting asked questions of how best to crop a team photo in the shape of a star (umm.. well either Amanda or Matilda will lose their head!) - well, it was destined to end early! And the gal's upline who was there was very much a "CM is all you ever need" type of gal so she didn't like our stuff at all, was visually ticked we had lumpy pages and that people actually liked them! We took one look at her face twitching and just put our stuff away!
We ended up just making cards for a bit and then bailed out early and never ever went back! |

I've just read all 7 pages of this thread, LOL all the way! I've been scrapping since 1994, and believe I've seen most of the behaviors described...probably even been guilty of a few! I mostly scrap at home now, or on two weekend retreats with just a few longtime friends, so not so many stories any more.
Way back in the early days, we cropped at a large CM crop held on Friday nights in a church fellowship hall. We were just discovering other, non-CM supplies. Each month, the CMC moved our table further back from the "pure" cm scrappers. Finally, we found ourselves alone on the stage while everyone else scrapped in community on the floor...that's about when I stopped attending!
And my worst nightmare crop experience was caused by my very own SIL, who _I_ brought to the weekend retreat! SIL is a ditz, self-absorbed, but lonely and friendless and my scrapping friends were kind to her. So we're all sitting around the table and she pulls out a huge stack of photos of *her* childhood, which of course means lots of photos include her brother, my dh. I know full well there is only one copy of these photos. She pulls out her guillotine deckle cutter (remember when CMCs had those?) and proceeds to CROP MY DH OUT OF EVERY PHOTO OF THE TWO OF THEM! Yep, my precious dh is piling up on the floor at her feet, while she mounts postage-stamp size photos of herself alone on her pages. I was so flabbergasted and astonished I could hardly speak. Imagine those classic Christmas tree shots with the two little kids in front of the tree, only the tree is cut in half and one kid is gone...yep. For real. My friends leapt into the fray and started distracting her, one would take her up to the table to see some "new cool tool" while another would grab a few photos out of her pile. Basically, she cropped my dh out of her childhood while I watched, except for the few photos my friends salvaged. My dh was so horrified when he heard it, that he drove directly to his mother and dad's house and begged them for every photo that she hadn't already taken. FIL gave me all the slides he'd ever taken (LOTS!) and I scanned them all and gave dh back a childhood scrapbook. BTW, I chose to be the bigger person and share the digital images with SIL, anyway.
Oh, not crop related, but same SIL went to college in her late 30s, and for a psych class decided to write a paper about her "emotional abuse". Basically, she wrote a 12 page paper about how her parents loved her brother (my dh) best and therefore brother was to blame for everything bad that EVER happened to her, including her disastrous failed marriage. She emailed the paper to me and asked for my help proofreading it--only thing she ever sent me for proofing in her whole life, although I worked as a proofreader for years. I read the thing...showed it to dh...then deleted it from our hard drive lest our kids EVER stumble upon it!
We don't crop together any more. In fact, I never, ever tell her when or where I'm going, cuz she invited herself along TOO MANY times! |

Hi! This thread is hilarious!
Just a warning- this is long...
I was a member of a local scrapbooking message group. The first crop was fun. The second- not so much.
Interestingly enough, it was a turn around on alot of the CM stories- The cmc had a club house. She would put the refundable deposit down for the crop. We did not pay. It was not a CM crop. We all brought dishes potluck style. She brought some CM stuff and set it up on a table in the back. That’s it- no sales pitch or "class" or anything.
A table of scrappers made loud obnoxious comments about CM being plain and boring. And how they like to embellish. Jeesh. It was a total reverse- a cm style scrapper being bullied.
Later, more comments on the email group ultimately resulted in the group breaking up. Really strange. It started up again later without those women. It wasn't long before new people started the same stuff-
This time- it was one scrapper in particular. She was an odd duck. Nobody's kids were better smarter cuter, etc then her daughter. She would talk and talk and talk- and they were the most annoying stories.
I still remember this one-
She says-"I was on the computer. DD came up to me to get my attention. And do you know what she did? She put her little hand on my leg!
UHHHHH...okay.... I didn't even know how to respond. No reply seemed right- That's cute? Interesting? WTH?
So, a few ladies were sick of her and started a secret group within the group. They thought there were so crafty- signing their replies with the initials of their secret group. Give me a break! They ended up pissing off the list owner and starting their own group. I saw one at a convention and she asked if I liked scrapping with the one annoying scrapper and I said no I didn't. Then she said well, MAYBE, we could let you in to our group.
I said, yeah, maybe... No thanks!!!
It was amusing drama while it lasted.

Those crop group message boards are a hoot. I have been on some that closed up overnight because some people didn't like other people so the list moms gave everyone the boot and started new invitation only groups with that "we want you on our list but don't tell so and so" bullshit. Alot of these people are peas, I hate to say.
I got an invite to be in this invitation only crop group; then at one of the crops I got into what I thought was a discussion but one of the mavens felt was a personal assault so she threw a hissy and sulked in the hostess's living room for the rest of the crop. Apparently she then "secretly emailed all the others and said either I had to go or she would quit. Well lucky for her I saved her the trouble and let everyone know that the drama was more than I was looking for in a cropportunity, but hey, thanks anyway!
About 2 months later the same chick pissed off another member and she quit the group, so guess who got reinvited back? ME!
There is a crop group here locally that a girl I know wanted to join to meet other people for scrapping, and they told her she had to come to "meet ups" to see if they all like her first, then they will decide if she can crop with them. Then, in addition to scrapping, she has to commit to other social engagements with them like their weekly meet ups for coffee. She was like, "WTF?" Needless to say, she declined.
Sorry if alot of peas recognize themselves in these stories, because if the shoe fits....
My recent story happened to me when I was working at an LSS. My boss freaked out on me and came over to me when I was with customers who were working on their pages and started yelling loudly at me! Then she started asking the customers about the thing she was mad about. The customers were looking at me feeling sorry for me and trying to defend me but I just stayed calm. Afterwards I finished my shift and resigned.
Scrapping for me does not require hysteria and is not equal to admission to an Ivy League school. |

I use to go to to crops but now that I live an hour away from a scrapbook store and have the fab "Scrappin Shed" i stay home. Anyway here is my story:
I had a friend lets name her x (not her real name). I met her at a crop at the LSS. I didn't realize it at first but it was all about her. She was always trying to do anything to get something. Anyway, we went to a crop at the LSS. So I set my things up and went across the street with another friend to eat dinner. When I came back all of my things had been moved from where I had left them. I always sat in the same spot because of lighting and it is where I choose to sit. I ask x why my things were moved and she said what did it matter. She said that her other friend had came and she wanted my spot. I was mad. |

I can understand this.
If you have a very cohesive group that has known each other a long time, it helps both sides see if the personalities will work together. You don't want to lose your long time friends over someone who turns out to be a nut or you don't want to traumatize an innocent with your style of insanity.
Oops, I did miss the first time reading about the additional extra meet-ups. That is definitely a red flag about a group's insanity level.....

OK. Here's my story... I helped at the CKC Saturday night crop. It was a lot of fun for me. I DID notice a few funny things though: First of all, to the people who believe they are entitled to all wonderful things at a crop... All of the prizes and offered things are FREE! No one has to give anything. You get a goodie bag, and if you don't like the stuff in it, sell it on Ebay or something.
Anyways, there was a bunch of scrappers who took the stuff they got and dumped it on a table for others to pick through because they didn't like them. That's fine. There were also shaker box pumpkins. LOTS OF THEM! We were giving 4-6 away to everyone who wanted them. I got the leftovers! Yeah! A solution to my Halloween card woes! Also, there were laser die cuts passed out. Also FREE. Lots of grumbling over the "crap" we were giving away.
I was trying to be nice to the "complainers". They paid to have time to crop either with or without friends.
Secondly, why enter for prizes if they don't want them? I avoided a few tables because they were constantly complaining about the things we were handing out and prizes, THEN COMPLAINED TO THE COORDINATER THAT THEIR TABLES WERE BEING SKIPPED WHEN WE PASSED STUFF OUT!
Anyway. I got 2 free goodie bags, some free magazines, LOTS of free die cuts, Lots of cute free pumpkins to decorate, and generally LOTS of FUN FREE stuff! I was really happy. Plus I got paid in CK credit to help out in the classes that gave me their kits for free! How could you beat that?! So, in summary. CKC Phoenix was the BEST crop experience ever! I spent 2 days reading this thread and I found it hysterical! Keep them coming people!

I don't have any true nightmare stories...more like bad dream stories...
Anyway, a few years ago (2003 or 2004) I attended my first crop at a LSS I had just found. So, I'm sitting there scrapping away when the owner of the store walks up behind me and looks at my pages for a few minutes, then walks off without saying a single word. I thought it was rather weird someone would very obviously look at your pages and not say anything, kinda like "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". I was a relatively new scrapper and it kinda threw me for a little bit. I later learned a lot of folks found this owner a little on the strange side and the store greatly improved once she sold it.
At a crop last year, my friends and I were seated with this lady who talked to herself the ENTIRE freaking night! She kept up a steady stream of thoughts like, "hmmm, should I put this picture here or maybe here? Let's see, which paper do I like better? I can't make up my mind, maybe I'll go look for something else. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. (you get the idea). It wasn't like my friends and I were excluding her - we're happy to make new friends at any crop. Needless to say, we were very happy when she called it a night a couple hours before the actual end time.
I've also witnessed a lot of the standard excessivly loud croppers, TMI croppers, talk too much on the cell phone croppers, etc.
Still won't keep me from attending crops - they're too much fun even when 'nightmares' happen!

I love this thread.
I haven't had any bad experiences at crops yet. I would never think to take my dear daughter with me she is almost 6 months and very much attached to the breast so therefore, outside crops are not on my list of things I can do right now. I don't know how anyone would find it relaxing to crop with their baby with them.
Anyways, I can't wait to read more funny stories. |

one of my last crop nightmares was earlier this summer. i went with happeagirl...so she can attest to this nightmare! there is a church near us that offers a 12 hour crop every 3 months. they provide childcare for the first six hours. after that, the husbands come pick up the kids or the mom's will leave if they don't have alternate childcare. well, one lady thought that she should be able to stay there with her four month old baby. that baby made so much noise and no one had the heart to say anything to her...especially since we were at a church. finally some people complained to the organizer who had been outside for all of the commotion, and she asked her to leave. i understand that the lady wanted to enjoy time being around other mom's and scrapbooking, but the rest of us wanted a day away from the kids. |

My story isn't a total nightmare, but it certainly was uncomfortable.
My SIL and I were going to a 8 hour crop at the nearest LSS an hour away. I love my SIL but she always has some little problem or quick errand to run that turns into hours. After getting onto the Interstate to head to the crop, she gets a cell phone call. Her mother has just gotten back from taking her cat of several years to be euthanized. Now her mother is a recent widow of about six months, so this was a little traumatic for her. Of course we have to go visit Mother to help comfort her. She scrapbooks also, but will only scrap either at her home or at her CMC's house. Her CMC holds a weekly crop. You guessed it. It was that very same night. She asked if we wanted to go to her CMC's house to crop instead of the LSS. I hadn't brought any paper with me, I had planned to purchase what I needed at the LSS. However, I felt sorry for her and went anyway. My SIL offered to share hers. We get to the house and it is a tiny house. There are already 6 women at tables in the living room. We get placed at her dining table in the combination kitchen/dining room. OK I'm there with my SIL and her mother; I don't even know the other women so I don't really feel put out. The table was 2 feet by 4 feet long. Plus my SIL is a scrapbook table hog. I'm placed in the chair which is backed up next to the sliding doors and my supplies are piled around me. I have just enough room to place one 12 X 12 page on the table. Well, we tying to scrapand the CMC's adult daughter comes by to show off her Yorkie. She sells them. Everyone OHHs and AHHS over him, and she puts him on the floor and sits on the chouch in the living room to talk to the ladies in there. The little dog comes into the dining area, goes under the table, and starts licking my toes! (I'm wearing flip/flops) I try to shue him away but he won't leave. Finaly (I guess my toes are clean by then) he wanders off. I politely tell my SIL that I think we need to leave and luckily she agrees. The CMC yells goodbye to us as we take our things to the car.

Gotcha Laura!!!!
Seriously I met another Pea at a crop this weekend and we were talking about this thread and how fun it was to read. I told her wouldn't it be funny if you got named for winning all the raffle prizes. She did win a lot but she put in a lot of money for a great cause. Way to go Laura. Actually it was a great crop. No nightmare story sorry!! |

I helped at the CKC Saturday night crop
I was AT that CKC crop and none of the extra freebies you mentioned ever came around to my table. humph! Hehehehe. And while I wasn't too tickled with the door prizes that I got (not my style) I was always real gracious about getting them and never once complained about them. I agree. It's not required to give away stuff so it's in real bad taste to complain about what you did get.
The only 'nightmare' about that crop was the open pictchers of ice water on the tables (which many of us promptly removed) and the lack of garbage cans/bags. I ended up buying a Coke in the gift shop just so I could get a bag and finally have something to put my trash in. It was fun. The snacks were homemade and rather tasty. It was the first crop I'd been to in a couple of years and I feel like I got my money's worth.
*eta* I didn't know anybody at the crop. I possibly knew them by Pea name, but there wasn't a whole lot of inter-table socializing going on. I ended up sitting at a table with two ladies who were friends after I'd helped them bring their stuff in. I still had fun, though

I've got one. We went to a long crop on Saturday, and the theme was girlfriends in Paris. We spent the first 4 or so hours listening to Kenny G and classical music (They said this was the only music they could think of to go with the theme). Unfortunately they also had it loud and we were under the speaker. As one girl mentioned later, we needed a Valium lick, we were about to go nuts. Plus they sat us at round tables, evidently last time they had griped because there wasn't enough room with the regular tables, so they decided round ones would be better. UGH!!!! | |

My LSS owner held crops at her house since her store was very tiny. I love her dearly, but housekeeping is not a strength of hers. On one occassion one of her children (probably 18 months old) dirtied their diaper. I remember sitting there thinking, "I am so not smelling this right now". It got so bad I pulled my shirt over my nose and asked the hostess to change the baby. She laughed and said she didn't smell anything and continued to scrap. Finally, I offered to change the child myself and she laughed again and said her husband would do it. Well, unless he was pychic, how would he know the baby needed changing? He was in another room watching tv. It was horrible. I thought the smell would permeate my scrapbook pages. Even though she is dear friend, I told her I had a headache and I left. I really did have a headache by that point-dirty diaper induced!

I haven't had a nightmare at a crop, I love my CMC. She's not uptight about 'contraband' supplies (we call them) or buying lots of CM stuff.
This is more of a funny thing, not a nightmare. We were at an all day crop, had been there awhile. She had set up the long tables in squares, so everyone was facing the center. The girls at my square were all friends of mine. One of them kindly pointed out the lady at the other square who every minute or so would make a hairball-in-her-throat coughing noise. From then on, everytime hairball lady coughed we all had to look down. We couldn't look at each other or we'd all have laughing fits. You know how you get the giggles and can't stop.... well that was us. | |
