I use the vaporizer to keep the air moist, sudafed (that you have to sign for at the pharmacy counter) during the day and benadryl at night so I can sleep. A lot of times it just takes time to pass. You want the nose to run if you have a cold because it helps wash the virus out. Benadryl can help dry that up, but if you use it a lot or too much it can make you tired and dry up your nasal sinuses leading to bacterial infection. So the combo is what I do. Sudafed helps with congestion and will make your nose open up, but it will run a lot and then you will notice that it just stops. That's good. You will start the whole process again the next day. Ibuprofen is great for sore throat as well as warm, salty soup. I wouldn't treat the cough itself. It is probably caused by the runny nose which may be really hard to eliminate during the accute stage of illness. And finally, see a doctor if you have a cough for a long time. Blessings and hope you feel better. BTW, I love East Texas. I went to SFA nursing school. )wink

I haven't found one medicine that works well for all those symptoms. I take Sufafed (the original little red pills, get them from the pharmacist, not out on the shelf.) Then forthe paid, I take Advil.

|Posted: 1/27/2008 11:27:08 AM|I'm a HUGE believer in Mucinex.
It's marketed as an expectorant (good for the cough), but I've been able to hold off many a sinus infection and major congestion with OTC Mucinex.
I haven't had to be on antibiotics for YEARS once my doctor introduced me to using Mucinex as a decongestant. I can't take the usual OTC decongestants because I can't tolerate antihistamines, but Mucinex doesn't make me jittery or sleepy at all.
I hope you feel better!

Get a neti pot and use it 2-3 times a day. Sudafed and Mucinex are the other things I use. The combination of Mucinex and the neti pot have kept me from getting sick.
Hope you start feeling better!

Original Sudafed & Extra Strenghth Tylenol
To get the Sudafed, be sure to bring along 3 forms of photo ID, you're blood type and your first born, if you have one. It's like against the law to get a cold anymore. I only wanted 24 pills .72 g I think is what my reciept said out of the allowed 3.6 g per day? I didn't mind asking for it behind the counter or signing the log, I think it went too far when I had to present my driver's license too.

My husband swears by the Mucinex nasal spray! Sprays make me gag for hours, so I avoid them at all cost.
I love Tylenol Cold and Flu--it comes both daytime and nighttime formula, but I only take the daytime and then do NyQuil at night--nothing else gives me that deeply needed, solid sleep.

I'm a HUGE believer in Mucinex.
I was going to say the same thing. Your sore throat/cough is possibly caused by sinus drainage, so this stuff helps tremendously.
ETA: Likethecookie, I didn't know that Mucinex made a nasal spray--thanks for the info.

I use the Alka Seltzer Cough and Cold gel caps - the ones in the purple box. I can't drink that stuff, so the gel caps work best for me!

I am so sick of this cold started out as a head cold and is not transitioning into a chest cold - this is da 10 and I feel worse than on day one. I think mucinex is going to be my friend - also drinking lots of hot liquids. Last night was the worst - my ears were plugged and felt like they were going to explode and the post nasal drip and fire in my throat. Feeling a little better now but I am so sick of this. I don't think a cold should stick around this long. Oh and when I start to feel somewhat good I so want out of the house - DH won't let me until I am well - going stir crazy - have to take DS to preschool tomorrow - couldn't drive him Friday.
