I always thought it was whoo but on some really cute owl themed paper and bag it was spelled hoo. It just didn't look right.

I've seen it both ways also and think that just like mama/momma it's personal preference. |

I would probably put "hoo", too. Never gave it much thought though.
For Canadian Peas: Now, Mr. Dressup's owl definitely said, "Toowit toowoo, toowit toowee..." That is for certain.

When I make cards with owls, they always say whooooo because I need it to, lol. "Guess whoooo is turning 30?" "Guess whoooo got promoted." "whoooo is having a baby girl?" etc |

Decades ago in New Orleans, my brother played the owl in his kindergarten show...he had to say, "HOOT HOOT, said the Owl!". So, I always think of that! |

I thought "hoot" was the name of the sound owls make. Kind of like, we say dogs "bark," but the sound they make isn't "bark, bark." It's usually "woof, woof." I've always seen the owls' sound spelled "whooooo, whoooo", as some others have said.
My...this is a deeply intellectual thread, isn't it? |
