Thought you might like this information if you get a chance to go:

Yesterday I went to the semi-annual Fiesta Ware clearance sale in Newell, West Virginia. The town is in the little part of West Virginia that juts up between Pennsylvania and Ohio. It is 45 minutes from Pittsburgh and Youngstown. They put up a big tent and sell all of the seconds they have on hand- which is a ton! The sale is held twice a year, in June and October.

Parking is free. They start giving away tickets at 7 AM for the first group. I was not there at that time, but I was there at 9:15. They gave out a second batch at 9:45, and at 10 they started letting people into the tent. They allow 100 people in at a time to avoid overcrowding. You walk down a hill to the tent. I had to wait until almost 11:00 to get into the the tent. You have to wait outside, so be prepared with a jacket, sunblock, umbrella, etc.

The tent is huge like a circus tent and filled with pallets of Fiesta Ware. There is no guarantee what is going to be there but it is all the colors and items currently being produced. It is not arranged in any particular fashion, you just have to dig for what you want and what you want may not be there if they don't have any seconds of that item. If you look at most pieces for a while, you can figure out why they are seconds. They have small white bumps on them, uneven glaze, a dark speck, etc. But many pieces are lovely and a typical person wouldn't know it was a second. Some pieces are covered with dirt and it is a good idea to bring a rag to wipe them off. I didn't know this and had to use my sleeve.

You need to bring your own dolly. A dolly that you would use for moving large boxes or appliances is good, one that lies flat on the ground is best. When you go into the tent you pick up milk crates and you can take up to 4 per person, filling them with as much Fiesta as you can fit into them. I only had a small dolly/luggage type cart and I could only fit 3 milk crates on it without risking losing some. It also would help to have 2 people, one to organize the dolly and one to dig.

There were a lot of people there when I went but not too many. The sale was Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and I was concerned it would be picked over when I got there, but it wasn't. They had put some fresh things out for Saturday. The dealers were there Thursday and Friday. They hire people to work for them, as you can only buy 4 crate at a time, and then you have to pay, go out, and get back in line. You can go through the line several times but it would take you all day. The dealers can be pretty crazy I hear but if they are really rude or break the rules, Fiesta takes their picture and kicks them out! I thought the company did a great job of controlling the crowd. In the tent people were nice- we did bump into each other but eveyone said, "Excuse me." There is a ton of dishes, so if you are patient you can get to what you want.

When you check out they have 5 checkers and 20 boxers so it goes pretty quickly. They wrap everything for you and put it in a cardboard box and you leave the milk crates behind. You then have to walk back up the hill to your car. This is another time it would help to have 2 people, one to watch the stash and another to walk back and get the car.

The prices were so cheap- many people there had been coming for years and had sets of dishes in several colors. I wanted to get a set of the burgundy plates to use for the holidays but the rest of my everyday dishes are a mix of every color but black and white.

Here is a picture of what I could fit in 3 milk crates. I got all of this for $150 with tax.

The prices were:
Dinner plate 1.70
Luncheon plate 1.95
Fruit bowls, 1.21
Serving bowls 3.00
Huge red bowl 12.00
Large Green bowl 3.50
Jumbo bowls 1.73

I wanted some ramekins but that was an example of something that just was not there.

Overall it was a blast and next time I will bring a willing accomplice with me!

That is awesome! I'm so psyched for you! I LOVE LOVE my fiestaware and would die for a Fiesta event. Fun! Thanks for letting us live vicariously through you.

Leanne, the good news is that Spokane has Kohl's and Macy's who both have great Fiestaware sales!

WOw....that is a very amazing story of your day. I would have been there to do a pick up with you for sure. However, the voyage from Vancouver would be too much.

I collect the perriwinkle and bought most of it here in Canada- at Linens and Things when it was a regular colour. I see some of my colour in your photo. I have quite a few pieces I have bought at Macy's in Seattle.

Jealous of your haul but happy you are happy too.

Wsan't it fun!!! It was not even a busy day yesterday. I got two of the large mixing bowls, two square and two rectangle baking dishes, another large canister (I already have three) for cookies, gravy boat, six (?) stacking cereal bowls, 6(?) fruit bowls, another medium 19 oz bowl, another individual au gratin bowl, 5 luncheon plates, four jumbo mugs, four 10 oz coffee mugs, a bread plate, great for tomato/basil salad, or asparagus. I also bought three dinner plates for someone at my DH work. I spent $198. Majority was the mixing bowls ($25 ea) and the baking dishes (sq $13 ea and Rect $15 ea) I'm right now in the process of washing them and putting away. I love looking in my cupboards at all that color! So glad you were able to make it. WHen did you get there? My mom and I arrived about 8am. We got up late!

Too funny, Sara! I probably was in line with you. I loved those baking dishes! I didn't have any more room though. I saw a few mixing bowls but people already had dibs on them. After three dishwasher loads it is all washed and put away. Hope you all can join us next June!

Cool! We vacation at Christina Lake, BC every year so it's only a couple of hours to Spokane ... didn't make it down to Spokane this year or I would have had some Fiestaware in my hot little hands already

WOW!! You got such a great deal!! I have navy blue, white and red Fiesta and love it. I'm lucky because I just use my red and white for Christmas time, and just the white for Thanksgiving and Easter. I love the look of your mixture of colors, it's so fun
