I finally found one at M's. Hoping to start on it right away, I realized that all the pages were pretty much done with the exception of a few embellies and rub ons 
I was hoping to be able to put the calendar together myself, intead I'm working with a scanned picture of the background what a bummer...I'm heavily considering returning this item

I think it is an excellent kit, great to put together for grandma's and it really looks well done.
It is a copyrighted product though, so you shouldn't be scanning it and reproducing it. Returning it after you scanned it is so wrong too. |

I could be wrong, but the way I took it is that she didn't realize the background was going to be done already - hence a "scanned" background page.
I haven't opened mine already, but didn't realize this is the way it was put together either! Guess I'd better look at it!

I don't think the OP meant she was going to scan it. The pages that come in the kit are just scans of pages that BG put together. I bought it too and was surprised when I opened it and found it was mostly done. Got it for half price so I'll keep it. |

wow, it is so easy to get off on a tangent here.
to get back to the question that was asked, yes, i saw it and was also very dissapointed in it. i wanted more of a "make it yourself" type item. my daughter on the other hand liked it. go figure! |

Yes. I was looking at it today at M's -- I was really disappointed that the pages are already printed and just need an embellishment added. Not much of a "kit" for a scrapper . . . more like something for someone who doesn't scrap but wants a homemade calendar. | |

I have seen it in person all made up and I think it is pretty cute. At first I was dissapointed in the printed pages, but I it a fairly quick and easy project for someone who doesn't want to spend days on a gift project.

Do you think the one you saw had extra embellies from the person's stash? I thought of "adding" to mine as well, but I can't get over how even the strips of paper, don't add much dimension/texture to the project.

I'm so sorry some of you were disappointed in this kit. And I can personally relate to your concerns because I, too, like all the extras and layers that really give dimension to a piece which was one of the reasons why I worked so hard to give it that appearance when creating it. I hope you'll forgive me if I sound like I'm defending, I truly just wanted to give you a reason for "why" we ended up with a product with a little less assembly.
There were actually a variety of reasons. First is sheer time. If you consider the person making this calendar will be doing 13 layouts and alot might want to do multiples for gifts, it still takes about 3 HOURS just to put one together (without inking). That's quite a time investment and it can be nice to have some of the prep work done, especially when you do more than one. It still ends up being quite a project. If we had made buyers do all the work, it might be overwhelming during such a busy season and they might not be able to finish them in time for gift-giving.
We also wanted to make it beginner-friendly for those that might not normally do a project like this or create something handmade. (I too think it turns out super cute finished!) I've done one myself to test it out and it took me a full evening to complete it and I did the original!
Another consideration we had was the sheer bulk of the finished piece if all the layers were pieced. It would be difficult to hang and write events on it.
I hope those of you that did buy and create it, love it and that if you're giving it as a gift, they do too.  |

I actually like the kit and put it together last night. It's for my MIL so I didn't want to spend a lot of time & product in a gift that might end up in a closet. I was at crop last weekend and someone put one together, she showed it off and everyone made a mad dash to display. Every single one of those calendars were sold. |

Yep, I was super disappointed about that, too. I almost ordered it, but when I looked at samples online, it looked "scanned-in" like OP said. Then I saw one at my A's and found that it really was already put together. I was hoping for something with all the papers, rubons, embellies, etc. that you put together yourself. |

I just bought one tonight with my 40% at Mike's. I didn't realize it was mostly done either. At first, I was disappointed to hear this and thinking I'd probably return it. But after reading Kelly's explanation/reasons, which totally make sense, and hearing more input from a few who like it, I'll keep it. I AM in a rush this season and don't have lots of time, even if in my heart I'd like to be more crafty. And I can see the part about it being too heavy and not laying flat if heavily embellished. Makes sense.... As for the photos, I plan to take a photo of my kids each month in 2009 and assemble as I go. Then I'll have a little 'year in review' mini album when I'm done, with all the important dates written in. And I'll make others for gifts, so the easy assembly is a plus for me. That said, I can see why many would be disappointed with it not being what they thought it was... |

I do my own like that except of course I add the pictures in before printing. I make the calendars pages throughout the year so I don't have as much to do right before Christmas. I print out the pages at home and get them spiral bound at Staples. |

Kelly's explanation does makes sense but I expected more from BG I guess. To me, a homemade scrap-style calendar is ok being lumpy/bumpy. If I was concerned about the flatness of it, I'd just buy a pretty pre-printed calendar and be done with it. Just my opinion. | |

I thought it was great....I was surprizes that the pages were preprinted, because it's really hard to tell even on a finished product.
One thing Kelly, why isn't your name on it as a designer? I thought it looked like your style, and I looked to see who designed it and couldn't find your name anywhere.

I finished one and I love it! It's a perfect gift for DD's grandparents. First, I was surprised that the background pages were layered images but by the time you add the additional die cuts and chipboard the calendar has a great finished look. You can still further personalize it with journaling, stickles, rhinestones...etc. Planned on making a second one and converting the kit to make it a self standing calendar (by adding 2 sturdy chipboard covers and rebinding it with Bind-it-all). I was too late, my LSS sold out of their shipment of calendars in just a day. Oh well, there's always next year. |

I did one for a store sample and it was SUPER CUTE when it was finished. It did take me all evening, so Kelly is right in saying that timing, for those who don't want to spend days on it, was considered.
My biggest complaint was that the paper it's printed on is thinner than normal BG, I worry that it won't hold up well over the year with all the weight from the embellishments. That said, I put eyelets in the holes and hung it up several weeks ago and it's held up beautifully with lots of people flipping through it.
My only request to BG would be ... please make the directions and pictures bigger next year! | |

When I saw the title of this thread the first thing that I thought was, "Ouch! That must really sting Kelly's feelings!" I'm sure that she put a lot of time & thought into this project and to see someone slam it so blatantly on a MB that she frequents - an on which she graciously offers so much BG product information - is pretty sad.
OP, it's okay to be disappointed in something and to express your opinion. This happens to be mine. I'm glad to see that Kelly came on here and explained why the calendar is the way that it is and really; no matter which way it had been made someone would have been unhappy with it, KWIM?  |

lol Thanks for asking! As BasicGrey isn't my product, there's no expectation of my name being on anything. It's really nice if it is, but defintely not expected. I work for BasicGrey so that's the name that is on the product

In my defense, I didn't even know who Kelly is and what she does for our scrapbook industry. Her pea name doesn't give any indication, nor does her avatar, nor does her siggy give the slightest hint that she's a designer for what happens to be one of my fav manufacturers.
I first noticed her yesterday, on another BG thred on pp's sold at M's and she provided some insight on what was available. For all I know she's an M's employee...I dunno ;blink:

ITA...Thanks Kelly for providing the info that you did on the calendar kit. I agree that you can't please everyone with just one product (I even said that to myself after studying the product the first night). I'm just so used to BG going ABOVE AND BEYOND my expectations (I've purchased so many kits throughout the yrs) that seeing scanned images was really unexpected that's all.
The DESIGN is beautiful, I can't argue that, but for me (as another poster mentioned) it's the quality that went into it. Again, I'm just used to BG going above and beyond my expectations.
Nonetheless, I plan to keep the item. I really enjoy the design and plan to make a 12x12 calendar instead.
Again Kelly, thanks so smuch for your time. I really appreciate your feedback. I look forward to seeing more of your posts and DEFENITELY plan to purchase more BG items. |

I was disappointed too about the "flat background", but mostly I was disappointed about the size of it- it just seems so small for a calendar. I didn't buy it because of the size actually- I wish it had been bigger.
I really like the design of the pages though, and I don't see that anyone was "slamming" that at all. I am sure Kelly is a big enough girl to understand that not everyone is going to be happy all of the time and that nothing said here was directed at her!
Anyway, I would have bought one for gifts had they been a larger size- more like the MM one in size.

I didn't say anything was directed AT her.
I DID basically say the part in between, just in a different way.
OP, I understand that you didn't know about her affiliation with BG. I think that this is a good "lesson" for ALL of us - myself included! - that we should consider that there are a lot of people on this board who might read something and it sting a little bit b/c they had a part in creating it. Not that they should necessarily take it personally, but I can understand that they would if even for a moment.

I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it's content, but I did find it interesting that it was just released (what a month ago?) and November's BG retailer newsletter already had it marked as discontinued
I said this exact same thing too and so I asked. As this was our first attempt at a calendar or anything like it, we were unsure of the popularity and how many might actually be in demand/sold. We printed/manufactured what we thought was a good number and to our delight, it sold out much quicker than we expected. Unfortunately because this item is manufactured overseas and there is quite an extensive lead time, there isn't enough time to have these re-printed before the season for calendars is over. We'll know more for next year!
Also since so many of you asked for larger/color directions for the calendar, I asked BG if they'd be kind enough to put them up on the website. They did so immediately. Here is the link. I hope it helps some of you.

LOL - I no sooner finish my calendar and now see that you've posted larger print instructions on your website!!!
First, let me say that I love the kit! ITA on the time issue as well as the weight if there were more individual papers to adhere to the background. I'm giving this to my mom for Christmas. She's not a scrapper and won't save the calendar at the end of the year, so it's not like I would want to spend a lot of time creating a keepsake for her. BUT, I know she will appreciate the work that went into this for her.
I would like to suggest that you color in the dates on the calendar. They are so light that I know my mother would never be able to see them across the room so I am actually coloring them in with coordinating colored pencils! My hand is killing me!!! I'm sure most of these calendars are gifts for grandparents, and given their age.... eyesight becomes an issue. I also agree that a 12x12 would be nice for next year!
Just my 2cents worth. I love the kit, it's just what I was hoping to find to give to my mom. Thanks for all your hard work on it!

i bought 3 of these.. for my in laws and 1 for my step mom.. they aren't scrappers so they don't understand the difference all they want is the pics and the calendar. they look forward to these every year.. these are very easy to do and doesn't take all week to do either. they make nice gift and they do have some dimension to them. i am not disappointed at all in them..
so if you are thinking of making these for gift (that aren't scrappers) they would love them..
it is getting harder and harder to find calendars so i appreciate that BG made these calendars..

I was at first. I would of liked to have had the paper for the layered look. But once I started to work with it added the embellies and pics I love it. It is fast and makes a great calendar. |

i love the fact that it's so easy. people that i plan on giving them to, will have no idea and will love their "handmade" gift. i plan on doind 4 of them and plan on completing all 4 at a crop on friday night.
i do think that i may bring a few buttons and ribbon...maybe even some bling and add it here and there. | |

Oh man...I just finished TWO for gifts NOW I read there are larger directions...I had to guess on a lot but it really turned out wonderful and I hope the recipients enjoy them...(I got mine at the CK Convention but wish I had used my 40% off at Michaels...would have even loved it more LOL)

I think this is a gorgeous calendar. And Kelly, thanks so much for the larger instructions.
I will say that I too was disappointed in the "flat" background, but mostly I think it was because the photo on the front just shows the original pages put together, giving the impression that the kit would include that. I didn't see a sample before I purchased mine (it is, after all, BG - I don't need to see a sample to know I'll love it!), so I didn't know. But, after Kelly's explanation, I am VERY glad that I won't be spending hours and hours assembling it. I can make a beautiful gift in a shorter amount of time - leaving more time to scrap for me! Plus, I'm pretty confident that I own all of those papers anyway, so I could always add more dimension if I wanted to!
Maybe as a suggestion for next year - put photos of the actual finished product on the package? | |

I just saw this at my LSS today and I picked 2 of them up to make as gifts this year. While I totally understand Kelly's explanation of why the kit was scanned images instead of layering, I do think that the packaging was a little misleading. In the photos they showed what must have been your actual samples because it did not look like scanned images--there was layered paper. I was disappoined when I opened up the kits and saw that it really wasn't how the calendar was going to be assembled. I am still going to make them as gifts though. Hopefully, next year, the pictures could be of what the finished project for ALL is going to look like, not just the original project. |

I watched 2 get assembled yesterday at a crop. They were nicer than I thought they would be based on what I saw in store and from hearing the complaints on here. What I also liked was how different they looked based on the photos used. Definitely a pretty calendar. |

No. I knew exactly what I was getting, I saw someone working on it. I didn't figure with it being a pretty much pre-made calendar that I bought with a coupon from Michaels that it would be too elaborate. |

one bit of advice about this calendar:
add your rub on holidays on the dates before you complete the claendar. after doing 2 of them this weekend......once you put all of the embellishments on, it was kind of hard to go back and rub on the special dates.
this is a great calendar and once i got past the teeny tiny instructions....the 2nd one was a breeze. | |

Another consideration we had was the sheer bulk of the finished piece if all the layers were pieced. It would be difficult to hang and write events on it.
I can see the wisdom in this. I made a calendar for my MIL years ago and because of the the extras I put on, it was bulky and heavy. Sounds like the BG would be a better option. |
