-52!!
I didn't know that it could go that low unless you are in the Arctic!
(Well, I'm in interior Alaska, which I guess is fairly arctic!)
It is cold!

This bottom of the front door.
It. Is. Cold.

This is one of my electrical outlets a couple days ago.
I've been told it is "normal" up here. Um, whatever! I unplugged this immediately and we haven't used it since. Today there is actually more ice on top. It's almost like there is a mold growing... it just spreads out on the wall!

*** I just took these pictures (1/05 - 4:30 p.m. Alaska Time)
You can see what I mean about the ice 'growing like mold'... there is a lot more ice on it than a few days ago.

This picture is of one my ds's bedroom windows.

This one is of the back door. You can see the ice growing up the door and on the window. Also, the hinge is totally frozen!

I know I keep saying it, but you guys are cracking me up with your comments!
I NEVER thought I would/could live in this... but its not as bad as I thought. Well, just wait until we get the heating bill and maybe I won't be so happy! I'll let you know what it is next month!

To answer a couple questions:
People do have pets here... but it is mostly heartier animals I see! Like Husky dogs, etc. I don't know anyone that has a little poodle or anything as the poor things would probably freeze to death when they had to go outside to potty.

I have thrown the water in the air and watched it freeze... good times up here in Delta Junction, AK! A very easily entertained bunch!

There isn't too much to do when it is this cold, so you better have your fridge stocked and a lot of family games. Thank goodness we all like each other! We got the boys an X-Box for Christmas and they (including dh) played a ton over the break. I'm one of those "limit the amount of t.v./video games" mom, but up here... I'm definately over that.

We can't get T.V. in our house. That's right... no Nick Jr, no Disney or no HBO (and no LOST!! boo hoo!) Cable doesn't come out this far and the owner of the home won't let us put a Dish on the side of the house. We are renting (as we'll only be here a year or so) and he has the house on the market to sell it. While I understand his perspective, I'm thinking there is NO WAY we can get through another 3 months of these cold tempuratures without T.V.!

My older ds (age 8) plays hockey. We have a rink in town, but it is NOT heated. So when it's -10 outside, it feels about -20 inside the metal building. They play until the thermometer hits -20 to -25. Those are some tough kids I tell you! My 3-yo ds and I sit out in the car with the heater on full blast!

I actually like it here. I like the adventure... living out my inner Caroline Ingalls! But I am sure when the job is finished I will SOOO be ready to leave.

You really do get used to it!

Wow! You two are at the extemes!
It's about 20 degrees here today but it was below zero overnight. We haven't had school cancelled in a long time due to cold (or snow, for that matter).

Is that the actual temp or taking wind chill into consideration? Either way, that is cold! It seems like it is always the coldest here around MLK Jr Day. Stay warm!

I would glady have some of you warmer Peas blow some heat my way!

This is my first winter in Interior Alaska... going a little stir crazy. You can't go out, well, you can... to the grocery store, etc, but you RUN as fast as you can from your car inside. You leave your car running, which is pretty cool that you can leave your keys in the car running with the doors unlocked and no one bothers your car!

My boys are definately going stir crazy. Day 12 locked up in the house. We moved from Oregon a couple months ago... they haven't been able to ride their bikes/scooters/no trampoline or even friends, so they are starting to bounce off the walls a bit. Not that I can blame them!
Patience is my New Year's resolution!

I can't even imagine what my heating oil bill is going to be this month!

Nicole-welcome back. I'd been wondering how you were doing. I knew you had a lot on your plate some time ago and hope some of the issues have gotten better.

Was that a new assignment up there? If so, I'm surprised that the military sent you up there despite your DH being deployed. I can't imagine how your sons are adjusting!

-52F right? I almost know how you feel. It was -45C (-49 F) yesterday without the windchill. That is so crazy.

Wish they would close our schools when it gets that cold.

Oh man...that brings back memories!

My first active duty base that I was stationed at was in North Dakota. It was the summer when I arrived there. Now keep in mind that I spent alot of my youth growing up in the deep South, especially Charleston, SC.

So, my sgt. is escorting me to the dorm and showing me around. We walk through the parking lot of the dorm and I notice all of these funny looking posts sticking up at the end of parking places. I asked what those were. The sgt. told me....

"Oh, those are to plug your engine block heater in during the winter so the engine doesn't crack from the cold."

I was like.............WTF!!!!!!!

Nicole, you need to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get some outlet insulation. It will do wonders for your house. Sometimes you can even squeeze 2 of them in there.

When we lived in Minot, ND we had a few times where it was -40 with -80 windchills. I thought I would go insane several times while we lived there. Fortunately, we lived in base houses so I did not have to worry about the heating bill.

You guys are cracking me up!

I know I need those insulation things. As soon as it warms up (like -20) I plan on driving to Fairbanks to get those things... which is 100 miles away! There is a small hardware store here in Delta, so maybe I'll try there. Well, I'll make my dh try there. I don't drive in this. I tried it this weekend to run to the store... the steering on the car was so stiff... the brakes weren't working all that well. My car did not like it (and it's brand new, too).

Rena, dh and I vacationed together on Oahu this summer -- I remember sitting by the pool, looking out at the ocean talking about what we were headed for this winter. A couple days ago we started our "Hawaii -- Christmas 2009" fund! A white Christmas is fun... a freezing-your-butt-off-can't-go-out-and-play-in-the-snow Christmas isn't!

Hi,
Welcome to Alaska! I know about those temps. I lived in Barrow a few years ago and we got a "cold day" from school when the wind chill hit -85. Luckily we lived in teacher housing and the heat was included. We also lived in an apartment building and the kids all played together, so it helped with the cabin fever.
Now I'm in Alaska southeast, but I sure miss the Interior!

That's just too damn cold and I live in a cold place. Throw a bucket of water out the door and watch it freeze in mid-air. When it gets super cold here that's a common weather report stunt.
