If you store your ribbon in something other than clear jars, let's talk.

All you jar-lovin'-peas out there...I love ya, I just can't do the jar thing. It's pretty to look at but I don't tolerate jumbled ribbon well. Please don't take offense.

If you have a way of storing that's neat and orderly, can you tell me about it, or link a picture of it?

Thanks.

I cannot stand the jumble mess either! I have a couple of methods. I do use some glass jars but I have mine wrapped around the old fashioned clothes pin to keep them neat. I also use the Cropper Hopper Ribbon Cards and store those in a clear bin by color family for easy access.

Yes, will admit that I am partial because I design for them, but I had these before I made the team.

Magistical Memories makes ribbon wraps that can hold ribbons of different widths.

I have all my ribbon wrapped around the little plastic embroidery floss cards and secured with pretty pins. I then put them all in ROYGBV in the plastic floss containers. Its not the most attractive storage system but it works so well. I love that I dont have to search through a box of spools of ribbon for a color like I used to do. I just pick the box with the color I need and I can see all my choices at once.

I actually use up more of my stash this way too just because I dont have to dig and its easy. And if I have a spool that is too big to put the entire spool on a card I cut off about a 2 yard piece and wrap that, putting the extra on the spool up in a box in the closet.

All my ribbon is neatly in the package that it came in. I store all the rolls in a 12x12 jetmax draw, PLUS I have a small carry all container I have other rolls in.

I have mine of the large cropper hopper ribbon cards, the ends secured with mini binder clips. Depending on thr width of the ribbons I can get 6-10 on one card. Then the cards are in an old metal Gremlins lunch box! heehee

you can see my ribbon storage HERE

I used to have it all on old fashioned clothes pins. It was sorted by color and such into big cracker barrel jars. It took so much room and was so hard to find anything that I wasnt using it.

I had to find a better way to store it and I did. Now, when I need say, Christmas ribbon, I cam grab what I want and take it with me to a crop or just to the table to scrap with it. NO more sorting through huge jars

My ribbon storage is in my blog.. It's a dress form.. I love it so much.. I do have cats and they like to play with the ribbons but it's not so bad.. When the pic was taken I hadn't really organized my ribbons yet.. Now they are organized by color along my little lady's skirt..

I struggled with ribbon storage for quite some time - I don't have a scrap room, just an area for storage in my dining room, and I scrap at my dining table. I finally decided on this: I bought the clear plastic craft bags from WM and several large metal rings. Each ribbon gets its own baggie. The baggies are then hole-punched and put on a ring according to color/theme. Sports ribbons have a ring, Christmas ribbons have a ring, purple, brown, pink, etc. etc. have their own rings. These rings are stored in a metal bucket in my scrap space. They are also easy to transport to crops..... just toss the rings into my bag and go.

I have mine on binder rings (approx. 2". I fold the ribbon in half which creates a loop, then run the tail ends over the ring, and through the loop, thus attaching the ribbon to the ring (hope that makes sense). I have a few rings, for various colours. I then have all those rings held together by another ring, and I just hang this in my scrap space off the corner of one of my shelves. I love it because it's easy to see what ribbon I have, and snip off some to use. And it was cheap too - looked at various storage methods and couldn't bring myself to spend the money .

I have mine on the ribbon wraps from Magistical Memories that Selena mentioned. They are stored on huge book rings, which hang on the rail I have on the back of my door. It keeps them tidy and visible, and they're really easy to take with me to crops. I don't have a pic with me now but if I remember I'll post one later.

I use the skinny CH drawers and 3x3 ribbon cards. I stacked 3 of them and they take up very little space on a shelf. Before I just had the spools in 4 photo storage boxes and it was taking up way too much real estate.

I can wrap 3-4 around a card and they're all organized by color. It has been the best system I've found for me. (tried the ribbon rings, clothespins, and loose in jars and none of it made me want to reach for and use my ribbon)

Forgot to add--J's has them 50%off all the time and the whole system ran me about $15.

I have mine in the Cropper Hopper Embellishment boxes. I now have SIX or SEVEN drawers full like this. I still have 4 jars of ribbon on oldfashioned clothes pins but that is not my favorite. They just look pretty! Anyway, the little boxes I use can be used in any drawer. You can see one of my drawers here. My ribbons are always wrinkle-free, it's easy to find what I need, and everything is neat and tidy.

I tried jars, and cards and thread spools and none worked for me because I have tons of ribbon so I found clear ribbon boxes that I store mine in. They are about the size of shoe boxes and stack on one another. I have one box for each color, or theme. They are great for me because I can expand my collection by adding a new box and I can pull all the ribbon in one color and easily see it.
I got mine from OT so they were cheap, I also like it because there is no rewinding spool fits in box nicely. Just go to OT and type in ribbon boxes.

I use the Ribbon Ring and LOVE it!
I tried winding around the cards, used the CH ribbon stuff (HATED IT!), throwing it all in a basket, etc. Didnt like any of that storage.
I have to place another order for more plastic because I seriously underestimated (by A LOT) the amount of ribbon I have! LOL
But they take minutes to string and organize, and they look SO pretty hanging there!
And since they've been hanging out in my line of vision, Im using it a lot more. I have them all strung on a 3 inch book binding ring, then hung by a suction cup hanger on my Ikea Expedit

Well, I know that I could not do the container storage- I also know that I love being able to grab what color and designs I need when I go to crops. I have tried MANY ways of storing ribbon- I had them all hanging off a rod as a valance....pain in the butt! When I wanted one, it was in the middle....ugh, same thing when I had them standing up right. It was then that I decided I like having them on the spools they come on. I don't like to cut off a bunch and take it with, because what if it's too much and I waste it??!! So, I talked with my husband and we came up with a shelf storage system. We purchased 4" PVC pipe, cut it in half so I then got 2 holders- we made them about 4 feet long and used the shelf racks to set them on. He cut little slits so the shelf bracket sits in in and it won't slide around. I have 3 of them on each bracket....I then set the spools in the half pipe! It is GREAT! I totally LOVE it, and I can actually SEE what ribbons I have! If I remember I will take a photo when I get home from work and try to post!
Good luck!

I know y'all will all be jealous of my storage system -

all my ribbon is on whatever roll or card it came on and then thrown into a drawer in a big jumble.

It's one of those "I've been meaning to" things, but I'd rather scrap than re-wind ribbbon!

I got the idea for my storage from someone here. I have my ribbon wrapped around foam core board and put in a pretty basket. It's very practical for me, and I love the way it looks! I can see every ribbon I have, it's neat & tidy, and it doesn't take up much space. Plus, I can grab the whole basket and take it with me to crops.

You can see a picture here. I've since added a few more cards and lots more ribbon, but you get the idea!

I don't have a dedicated scrap space where I can leave things out, so my ribbon storage tucks away into the armoire in my dining room. I bought 3 of these ribbon storage boxes from Mike's and then wrapped my ribbon around mat board I had cut to fit.

Spongemom, I love it! And I love your pea-handle, too. My grandsons would sure appreciate it!

Alas! Last summer, I'd decided to take all my ribbon rolls out of a plastic container that I had them in and store them in a Pull-Ez. I loved the look of the Pull-Ez (still do, as a matter of fact) and I thought it would be SO EASY to see what I would need and just pull/cut what I need. So, I trashed all the ribbon spools, rolled each roll tightly by hand, and laid them as neatly as I could inside the Pull-Ez, then threaded the end through one of the myriad holes of the Pull-Ez.

Although I didn't have near enough ribbon to thread through all the Pull-Ez holes, I had so much ribbon that it filled the case. I like the fact that I can easily spot what I need and go from there. But many times when I'm pulling what I need, the ribbon inside tangles, then I have to open the lid and untangle it through a myriad of other ribbon that, by the way, isn't laying near as neatly inside the container as they were when I initially put them in. So, as much as I like the idea, this method just isn't working as well as I thought it would for me. So, I'm glad to see this thread and hope to get some better ribbon organizing ideas. However, if you don't have a lot of ribbon but desire an easy way to view and pull your ribbon, this might be a good product. I'm assuming that maybe it won't get tangled if you don't have a lot stored in it. Anyway, this is what mine looks like:

This is a sample of what it looks like when full:

If anyone is interested in the Pull-Ez but would like something a little more economical, I came across this homemade Pull-Ez. Wish I would have seen this earlier!

Anyway, they're all great ideas here. I guess it's just a matter of finding what method will work best for you. Keep the ideas coming!

I wrap mine around plastic floss bobbins and store them in fishing tackle boxes that I bought at Outdoor World for $3. each. I have tons of ribbon ( and I do mean tons) so I have a box for each colour group. I store the boxes in a tote that I also bought at Bass Pro shop meant to hold the tackle boxes. the whole system might have cost me $30.00 and is really efficient. You can see through the boxes to see the colour that 's in there and each individual ribbon is easily seen and removed and neat not tangled. I really like this system.

I do the clothespin method. I don't have a ton of ribbon so I only have 2 jars. I'm very happy with it- if I rummage around the jar everything stays on it's clothespin. I just grab a few clothespins and hold them against my project to determine which I want to use. When I go on crops I just grab whatever I think I might use and throw it all in a ziplock bag to take. I like that I never have to worry about ends coming loose.

I use Vinyl Rain Gutters.. I bought a 10ft piece at lowes for around $6... I cut 4 section out of it. So I have 4 gutter pieces... I also bought the end gutter pieces so your ribbon doesn't come off. I have tried many many ways and this is the one I have loved. Your ribbons are pretty displayed and you can just grap a roll you want and not worry about taking them off the rolls (which make them tangle, etc)

I just wound all mine around a finger or two and stuck it into two floss boxes organized by color. you can fit 3-8 different ribbons in each 'hole', and if you stick them down in there right, you can see them all at a glance. I did decide to take my American Crafts ribbons out and stuck each color set onto a safety pin and hung that from a book ring (very similar to the look of the ribbon ring). Those ribbons are just too pretty not to have out in front of me. Plus I need to use them more... I'm hoping this helps me with that.

Wow. Lots of ways to store ribbon...who knew?

I like the cards from Magistical Memories. I think I may make some of those. (A punch and some chipboard...)

The bag is cool but again...messy. And pardon the implication, but what prevents it from getting all tangled when you pull it out?

I have the rolls organized in a drawer but I have tons of ribbon that was purchased by the yard and therefore has no roll. And to make matters more interesting, I can't buy ust one yard. Ribbon for me is like the Lays potato chip commercial--I can't do just one!

Bethie, I don't like to be jealous of other people...but that card catalog is a-maz-ing! And for only $80! I hope you know how freakin' crazy lucky you are!! And yes, I am so very jealous. I'll have to work on that. Maybe you could leave it to me in your will or something.

THanks peas.

I use empty thread spools and wrap the ribbon around the spools. Then I put the spools on thread spools holders that are hanging on the wall of my scrapbook room. If the ribbon is thin then I can wrap two different ribbons on the spool. This lets me see all the ribbon and easily get to it.

I've banned myself from buying loose ribbon And then challenged myself to use up the loose stuff. at the moment what is left fits in a bowl.

The rolls of AC and similar ribbon are in a drawer.

Here is how I store my ribbon...it's so nice because I truly use it alot more because I don't have to untangle it anymore when I need to use it.

ribbon storage

total cost to do this was about $3.25 (2 packs of push pins, cheap clear tabs from WM to hold the ribbon on the chipboard that I had tons of sitting around) the chipboard pieces are 12x6inches.

I unfortunetly haven't put all my multi-colored ribbon on these boards because I like the way they are stored (an IKEA drawer, rolled in those plastic little embellie containers).

I use the CH ribbon "spools" with binder rings to make it like the ribbon ring.. It is really pretty, all sorted by color, it "girlies" up my space. (I share the rec room with my 11 year old DS)

I hear you! I did the jar thing and then got frustrated digging for them. I made my own ribbon cards and put them in a fabric colored box. Here's the link:

also, for the American Crafts ribbon I unwound them from all of their spools, punch a small hole on one end with my crop o dile and put them on a ring. Now its hanging from the MM embellishment center.

I have done a couple of things..
1.) I wrapped all my ribbon around big popsicle sticks. And you can store those in a drawer
2.) I currently use a MM embellishment center for my full spools.

I store mine in a pantry/kitchen organizer that I bought for less than 20 bucks...I need to see mine and I wanted to utilize wall space storage instead of the expedit baskets I had them in...I needed them for something else.

HERE is my version of homemade ribbon rings. I like it better than the real ribbon rings because mine are longer and distribute the ribbon down the length of the strip. I don't have a picture up yet of them all loaded up, but you get the idea, I'm sure.

I do have some in pretty glass jars in my corner wooden shelving unit, but those are more for decoration, or just duplicates.
I have the Pull-EZ also, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! It looks cute (IMHO) and it's so portable!

i use a couple of organization methods for my ribbon
a lazy susan type with dowels to put rolls on
dowels in the sides of my IVAR shelving unit
and wrapped on cards, organized on binder rings and hung on peg board

I have mine wrapped around the old fashioned wooden clothes pins and then stored in a plastic container...you can't see them and it's prolly not too organized, since they are just thrown in there. But they are not a tangled mess and that is all that matters to me!
