I just uploaded PSE7 yesterday, but I have been gathering digi kits for over a year, so I have quite a few.
Right now I have them in my documents all zipped up. Where is the best place to store them? On the hard drive? On an external harddrive?
Also do you recommend a particular program for storing and organizing them?
I know that's a lot of questions, but I want to get started, and would like to be in organized first.

I have an external HD, but I've only been digiscrapping about two or three months. |

I store all my scrapbook stuff on an EHD. You may also want to burn cds of your pages and/or do an online backup. EHDs can fail and you would lose everything. Here at 2peas all your download links are saved forever, so if you lost the kits you purchased, you can download them again at no charge. |

My "current" working kits (kits I'm not tired of yet) are on my main drive (but I have a TON of space on my Mac Pro tower and multiple hard drives). I make monthly backups to DVDs. My design work however is always working off EHDs. |

I use ACDSee for organizing, and am taking the Jessica Sprague class on it, which has helped a LOT! I have tons of pictures and tons of digi stuff, so I separated the digi stuff to its own folder separate from photos, in my ancient Image Pro it was taking too long to open everything up. Now I organize in ACDSee and edit in PSE.
I also store everything on my hard drive, but have a computer geek hubby. We have one dedicated machine on our home network that is used solely for nightly backups.

Just a cautionary note.... those EHD DO fail. Without notice.
I'm not saying how I know that..... but let's just say that it cost A LOT~!!!! to retrieve from a specialist after it fails.

I don't have any EHD's mine are all internal as I have a Mac pro tower but I store everything on my extra hard drives and keep my main one just for all of my programs/applications. I then have two hard drives that are basically exact duplicas of each other in case one ever goes. |

just adding my two cents here....
if you treat your EHD's like a faberge egg (sp? LOL) they should
be fine for a good long time. there are lots of fine prints details
in the manual you can read that will help you protect it. like not
storing it near a tower, a monitor, anything magnetic, constant
sunlight, etc. also it should be in a really well ventilated area to
help it stay cool with lots of air circulation and such. it's a total
pain, (since i'm always trying to cram soooooo much electronic gagetry
into my workspace! LOL) but it's worth the extra effort to keep those
babies safe. think of them as the diva of hardware. |

SHOULD be safe and real life..... not always the same thing.
Those puppies fail too. It's not a question of If, it's a question of When.

Ugh--it's true EHD *should* be safe, but they do fail just like everyone here warned/mentioned. I couldn't believe it when mine died. I never did get it revived either. I work with quite a few tech people (I'm one myself actaully!) and when I told them about it and asked for ideas, they didn't seem at all surprise that it failed. I kept saying "how did I not know this!" The consensus was they're only guaranteed to last ONE year. I've had others that have last longer, but I wouldn't count on it as being the ONLY place to store your stuff. I now back up my photos online for about $5 a month. Best of luck to everyone!

Any suggestions for a good reliable and inexpensive on-line storage for photos, layouts, and digital elements if needed?

I back up on an EHD. I'm thinking of getting another one to back up my back up. Do they really only last for 1 year???? YIKES!!!!
My entire digi card business is on that EHD!!! Oh My! |
