I started out sewing as a hobby. DH built a nice little room in the basement for me to sew in since I was taking over the basement. Then I learned how to knit. So I collected knitting supplies and actually have most of it in the guest room closet. My stash so to speak.
Then I started scrapbooking and stamping. Dh wanted it all in the one room. So I did try that for awhile then and moved it to the office but it was too far away from the kids. So I moved it back to to my craft room vs sewing room. When I want to sew I cant because the scrapping stuff is everywhere..when I want to scrap I have to put away the sewing stuff. I just need more room!
So I want to do a clean up and reorganise this weekend. Starting tonight. I walk in and say..Where do I even start.

I'm no help, but I am so there!! Started sewing--got tons of fabric. Added making jewelry---lots of beads. Now scrapping. YIKES!! I WANT to organize it, but just don't know where to start!! It's ridiculous. Each time I start, I purge, purge purge!! That feels sooo good!!! Sorry, not much help, I know!! |

I would start in one area first like the sewing. If you have things you haven't used in several years think about donating those things to Goodwill, etc. Be objective and really look and think about what you are hanging onto!! If you are unsure about it put it into a "maybe" pile and get back to it. Do the same with your knitting and then your scrapbooking/stamping things. I do thins once a year and donate things I know I will never use again to a local church group, Girl Scouts and also Goodwill. Or have yourself a yardsale and use the money fr more organizing items, like a chest of drawers, stamp pad caddy, etc.
Wish I could be there to help you!! It would be fun!! |

This is what I did in my craft room. Maybe it will help. You've got an awesome space - it's just really full!
Start by gathering some large containers, and labeling them keep, donate, trash.
Then I'd go through the room as a whole and pick up any obvious trash and get rid of that first.
After that, I'd start gathering all the supplies for your various hobbies together. All the sewing stuff. All the yarn stuff. All the scrapbook stuff.
Then I'd pick one of those hobbies and start going through supplies with your boxes in hand. Be ruthless. Pare down. Fill up your boxes. As you get a donate box full, close it up and take it to your car immediately. Remove the temptation. Take trash out as soon as it's full.
After that, you've got pared down, manageable amounts for each of your hobbies. Now comes the fun part!
Sort like items together. Sort your fabrics by colors or patterns, whichever you prefer. Sort other items for your other hobbies similarly.
Pick an area of your room, kind of like they do in kindergartens, for hobby "stations". Make one area for sewing. One for knitting/yarn stuff. A final area for scrapbooking/paper crafts.
Now start putting things away in the proper areas. Clean shelving and drawers as you go. Make sure you've pared down enough that you have room to grow, because chances are you will buy more things.
Most of all, put on some fun music in the background, have something cold to drink on hand, and HAVE FUN! Your room will look gorgeous and be useable when you're done!

I'm making headway even in the small amt of time I have been trashing and making piles of same things..Like PP in a pile, embellishments in a bin, pictures in a box..then I will sort each pile/bin. I can pare down a little but pretty much everything I have I want. I am on a buying freeze so I can only buy things like adhesive, zippers etc..to complete a project. Not buy anything new for a project itself.
Last night I wanted to knit so I had to take yarn from stash and find a pattern .KWIM. I am making some clothes for my little neice's B day instead of buying. I have so much fabric/yarn/scrapping/stamping/beads it is CRAZY!You name I probably got it. LOL!
Ill post a pic as I make progress thru the weekend. |

good lord woman that's a whole lotta stuff Honestly I would just do what they do in "Clean House". Empty out the room completely. I think that folding the fabric like that stacked up gets messed up too easily. Do you have a closet in there? Maybe you could hang the fabrics on hangers and cover them with plastic for protection. Then make 3 piles:
"to keep"
"to purge"
"to giveaway"
Good luck! |

I'm sure you will be doing the donate, trash and keep thing. My suggestion would be to move the scraping stuff to the bookshelves. Next move the material to the wire cubes. Fold it, organize it by color and put the colors in a ROY G BIV order for an eye pleasing order. Also assign each cubicle(s) a certain color, when a cubicle is full you can't purchase anymore of that color until your stash is parred down.

Lots of stuff and I did exactly what u did one craft to another, do as others said key is Purge alot!
try to make zones, one for sewing one to scrap
then edit to fit the areas, even if it means stowing fabric in crates stacked and labeled it would organize your fabric.
Also try to use 2 tables one for sewing, one to scrap
have a work in progrss bin
one for sewing one for scrapping
this keeps you more organized
I use baskets
just some ideas
good luck

I just did this with my mom's room. Granted it didn't look as full as yours, but there was a TON of stuff in there. I would go through EVERYTHING. Anything you don't want, either trash it or donate. Divide stuff out as to what it is, fabric, yarn, patterns, pp, embellishments, etc. I would pretty much empty the room, or at least empty an area and fill it/ empty another area/etc.
I would make a suggestion. Anything you don't think you will use all the time or maybe the fabrics, put in a big tub. One thing for me was realizing that I didn't NEED everything at my fingertips all the time because I wasn't going to use it...for example extra albums, page protectors, mini books, etc. These items are in another area of the house, not taking up valuable space in my scrap area. I still have them when I want them, just not overwhelming my space!

OMG! Ok, so I am right there with ya...I am presently PURGING..getting ready to move to my new "creative studio". I am only dealing with SB stuff- BUT...what I did notice from your photos and where I would start first is the FABRIC! Those shelves are huge that all that fabric is on. I would get a couple laundry baskets..(because it's ONLY TEMPORARY) and throw it in there...now you have a nice area to start putting items.
I am almost done doing all my papers.......wow, that is a huge job! I also went threw all my scattered stuff and threw the things into a laundry basket that will hang on my new 'Clip it up" that I haven't made yet...but I will.
Please keep us posted as to how it is going! Good luck!

Thanks for the inspiration!!
I think you are on the right track. I would sort all like items together, find appropriate storage for those, move on to the next craft.
This will be so worth it in the end. If possible I would try to have zone areas for each craft you do.
Post some pics of after so we can see your transformation!!
Happy organizing to you!

I too have a sew room with scrapbook stuff, beads, and yarn. I did a big cleaning after Christmas. I thought one day and it took me four. I did not give away anything yet. I sorted and sorted. I have five stacks of magazines I need to give away, or throw out next trip to the recyle. I did buy laundry baskets for my fabric. It is at least sorted and not spilling out all over now. I do feel I have more space to work and can did out for a project. Some friends came over they can't see that I did anything. But I now know were things are better. Cathy

Wow, that's alot of stuff. Empty out the room and plurge, put your sewing and knitting to one since of the room. On the other side of the room put your scrapbook stuff. No more shopping...its doesn't look like you need anything.

I totally agree with those that say to take things OUT of the room. Fabric you are not using right now. Extra albums and protectors. I did that a while ago, and need to do it a bit more I head to the basement, dig through my bins of fabric for what I need, and bring it up to use it.
Off to work on my room.... |

First of all, let me say that you've got a great area to craft in! I'm jealous!
Second, I agree with the others when they say to take everything out and clean/purge as you move things back into the area. I'd group things by the specific craft (scrapping, sewing, and knitting) and store the supplies with the equipment/tools for that craft. (Zones, as someone posted earlier!)
Where are you located? If you're nearby, I'd be glad to come help you!
Good luck, and I can't wait to see more photos of your progress. You can do it!!!

LOL, I can relate - but I'm not brave enough to post a picture!
If you're a "collector" moving everything out of the room might not be wise. I did this the last time I purged and ended up with TWO messy rooms for longer than intended. It's time to deep clean again, so I think I'll tackle it corner by corner this time and leave everything in the room.
Good luck - and don't get discouraged. It will be worth it!

What a great room. I know that you will enjoy that space one things are in order. I have just spent my weekend sorting and purging scrap supplies. A friend convinced me to create page kits with my stash - pp, cardstock, embellies, ribbon, etc. in large baggies (today I am supposed to add photos and sketches). What was scattered in bins and boxes now stacks relatively well in large baggies taking up much less space. I can grab a project and go... When I looked at your photo the first thing that caught my attention was the fabric. My suggestions is to get some of the space bags (vacum sealed) and sort/store the pieces. That will clear a lot of storage space for you to work with. Then of course lots can be hidden in those storage bins... Good luck.

Cheers to you for taking on this project! You go girl!!! Keep going while you are motivated. Great idea to break the project down into sections, or smaller projects, time limits, etc.
I am constantly battleing similar problems. I quilt and sew. I found it much easier to sort my fabric first by size, or length, into bins, then by color. So if I need three half yard lengths for a project, I know to start with at least the half yard bins. I can move up into the longer pieces, but don't even touch the 1/4 yard bins. Too often I found the perfect fabric and didn't have enough. Bummer. I also knew quickly what I needed to shop for after raiding my stash.
I also keep all the stuff for one project together in a bag or box. This goes for scrapping too. This way I don't use something I need for another project by accident. I also have grab and go work when I'm heading to a crop, a class or a quilting get together.
If you go to crops and have enough extra tools, you can put together a "road kit" of standard supplies. Most of us have several paper trimmers, scissors, tape runners, etc. and maybe even an extra tool tote. I always have that ready to go too. Too often I run out of time the night before a crop and always take WAYYY too much stuff.
I use the Toss, Relocate, Give Away bins when I clean out areas. My daughter is currently working on cleaning out her room. We have an area in the basement for give away stuff that my kids will have a tag sale with this spring. After the sale, everything goes to Goodwill. I take all the craft supplies to the school for my Down Syndrome sister. They are always looking for craft supplies.
I'm the child of clean, but sloppy parents. Plus my parents are children of the depression and NEVER threw anything away. As a result, I am constantly battling messy habits and the urge to keep things "just in case" or "I might need this sometime". Of course, when "sometime" comes I either can't find the item, or don't remember I saved it!?!? So I should have gotten rid of it in the first place.
Good luck. I can't wait to see the update photos.

Wow! I love your little craft space even if it is messy! I can see lots of potential. Have you thought about buying Rubbermaid storage bins with lids to put your fabric and yarn in? Fabric doesn't stack well and if you put it in bins vs. just sitting on the shelf, you will get more storage space because you can stack the bins on top of one another on those white shelves.
Good luck!!! |

I'm thinking that I would start with the fabric, roll each piece and secure with a rubber band. Then put it in clear containers marked with the approximate sizes. Looks like you could stack 2 or 3 containers on each shelf, therefore giving you a bit more space. Maybe another container for misc. sewing and have it all on those shelves. Another container for yarns and such for knitting. I did this for my room, bought Elfa shelves for the walls and I have everything in clear containers (hidden in baskets) and labeled so I can grab the container out of the basket and take with me or just use and put back. Seems to work for me. You are very lucky to have multiple surfaces for working, I have one table, so the sewing machine has to go back if I want to scrap. I hope this helps.

Wow, lots of work you've got onyour hands, but the outcome will be worth it.
I would start with the scrap supplies, and purge/organize like with like, there. Then move the fabric into bins (by size, type or color, depending on how you typically select it). I would personally do clear bins so I could see what I had, but you might be happier with opaque storage if you find it visually cluttering.
Then move the scrap stuff to the bookcases/shelving. If you are very project oriented, then I would group project items together.
Then I would create work zones, as near to the appropriate stash as possible. The counter for scrapping, and a table for sewing. Don't forget to leave space for your iron/ironing board - it's so much easier when its out than dragging it out every time you need it.
Then I would see if I could move some of the knitting stash into the wire cubes. Maybe not all, but the stuff you need access to for quick projects, so you could grab a project for upstairs. Otherwise, you'll spend all your time in your room and your family will wonder what happened!

Thanks for everyones comments. They are realy helpful. I stayed up pretty late on Friday cleaning and moving things. Then just thinking along the way how I can create zones so to speak.
The fabric is in open wardrobes. VERY DEEP! You put it together yourself type from Home Depot. All the fabric is prety much folded and sorted by type. Knits. Wovens,slinky/dressy, Wool and Coords, etc. So I just need to sew what I have. I am not even going to attempt to pull it out right now. i want to be able to just move in the room and pull from what I can see.
The scrapbooking things are pretty much put away. I have wire cubes as soon as you walk in that I need to sort better but at least they are semi sorted as I speak. Cardstock in one cube and PP in another. I will have to pull/organise from that because it is a little mismashed. I have a stack of PP that I need to organise to make it easier to pull what I need/have. I just have a pile all mixed up right now.I am not sure I am a maker person or color..I think maybe color would be better. Now how to store it that way?
Yesterday was a wash since i was not home all day and came home too late to even want to start working in there again.
Today I plan on getting in there for awhile . A work in progess right?
Ill post a pic in a bit..of what happened up until Friday night. |

Yes, I am a collector bordering on hoarder of my craft things. I love everything I have. LOL! But I am getting better in using my things. I am making myself.
As far as the TV. Yes I would LOVE to get another but I am in the no spend mode and it works at this point so no need to spend a few hundred on it. My plan is to get a smaller one and suspend it in the corner at the ceiling. I also have a phone and computer jacks that need a laptop and a phone for . LOL!
This is Friday nights progess.
More pics tomorrow of what I got done today. Photobucket is not working well right now.
Yes, there was some flat space in there. LOL! I have a table! Scroll over to see the full picture.
I added the craftroom url to see as I get more done. Password is craftroom if it does not work.

You're making some good headway! Isn't it nice to find empty surfaces again?

Well, I am still working too! I am now doing RIBBONS!! UGH! I spent yesterday trying to decide what to DO WITH IT ALL! I surfed on the internet for ideas, and I finally decided! I am keeping all my printed ribbons on the spools, and the colored ones I am taking off the spools and putting in containers. That takes up a lot less room!! I also started my new curtain panels today! YEAH! So hopefully soon DH will start the shelving! Soon....it will be done!

Great progress! I did this last year so I feel your pain. One suggestion from the experts, when you are doing serious purging it really helps to have an honest friend there with you. One who will tell you "girl that is too ugly for words" so you know it's time to let go! Good luck, can't wait to see more.

Wow! I am now so very thankful we moved often even if it was in the same city!! I grew up in the military and never had the chance to accumulate things. The military would only move a certain weight. Then I got married and we moved several times into different apts til we bought our first house. We'll be married 30 years in Sept. and have moved 12 times!!! I'm sure that's no record for some but it sure has kept me from piling up a craft room like that. It must be like going shopping every time you step in your room-Candy Land for sure. I'm rooting for you to make it through your stash and have a brand new shiny room soon. |

I am a little at a stand still. I put up shelves in another closet in the basement so I can move some of the fabric to that closet. Otherwise it is looking Pretty much the same.these are the last pictures. I will take more later tonight when I make a little more improvement.
