Do they allow the points to roll from year to year? I might be worth it if you had a M's that was one of new ones. $25 a year? I'd have to do some math to decide if it was worth it. I suppose this means they will stop sending the 40% coupons to the general public in fliers now. |

Interesting that they are charging for it. AC Moore has a trial of a rewards program (only certain stores so far) and it's free. |

FREE membership
Frankly, it is a little off-putting given how much $$ I've spent there!

Sounds like they are doing a market test to see which offer gets the most response. Standard marketing practice, particularly for a company as large as Michael's that spends lots of $ on advertising and a web site.
Someone else posted that their M's had surveyors in asking customers about emailing coupons only, so they are definitely evaluating their marketing.
So if you got a "free" membership, make sure you respond

Actually it sounds like standard M's practice every store has different rules and you get to guess which ones they will pick and choose.
If it were me getting the 10% and 20% off offers I'd email them and say you know for a fact other people have be offered something different. |

I wondered when I got the email this afternoon how long before it was discussed here
It clearly states that they are testing this new program so I don't think it's surprising that they are putting various offers out there to see how customers react. People pay for discount memberships all the time, just look at Costco, Sams Club, etc. People pay $40+ a year and it's not even for a discount other than what their normal pricing discounts are.
I got the free offer, with the only benefit being 10% off every time I shop. Of course I signed up, what do I have to lose? I lost my 25% discount when I left M's and I never have my coupons with me when I stop in so I might as well at least get 10%
As for all the rumors about M's closing...I posted elsewhere about this but everyone needs to stop living in panic mode. M's posted a profit for the quarter and for the year. Yes sales were down but they obviously made up for it through their gross margin and their expenditures. They are an enormous company and doing okay. J's had a net loss in part of 2008 and posted a much lower net for the 4th quarter and 2008 than M's did but you don't see everyone panicking about them, do you? I'd be more worried about J's going out long before M's. Just because Circuit City closed doesn't mean Best Buy is next, Linens N Things closing doesn't mean Bed Bath and Beyond is next, and so on. I personally think all the panic and rumors are going to do more damage to our economy than a lot of other things. I'm opting to be cautious and plan, but I refuse to get sucked into the catastrophic rhetoric.

Thanks pigglystix for throwing that out there Needed to be said and long overdue.
Now, as for the rewards program offer, I didn't get one but I would jump on that in a heartbeat for the 40%off every time I shop. I'm tired of having to hunt down coupons. I used to buy a Sunday paper for $1.50 every week to get the coupon so what's $24.99 a year, right?
They wouldn't be the only store charging for a rewards program. Look at B&N. I think it's totally reasonable that they would go this route and I don't think it means they will be doing away with a flyer coupon necessarily. But even if they did, look at all the threads on here complaining about how bad the store is, never has anything new, etc. So just let those that actually want to shop there, have the option of buying into a program that allows them membership benefits EVERY time they shop vs. whenever they happen to scrounge up a coupon.
I like it.
ETA: The math's pretty simple. You spend $2 a month to get a card with unlimited 40%off coupons(or at least one per day) and could potentially earn back $10 of the program cost in merchandise credit. It's a no-brainer to me. But then, I easily spend enough in M's to get that $10 every month if you're correct about that point system. |

20 points for every $1 spent at Michaels  once you reach 2000 points we'll automatically send you a $10 Michaels Gift Card
60% off custom framing all year long
An exclusive membership card
One full year of membership
It is $24.99/year.
Actually what I would end up doing is going back through the line 5 or 6 times so everything I got was 40 percent off. |

I personally think it is dumb that you have to PAY to earn rewards. Go get yourself the Jo-Ann's Mastercard and earn reward points with everything you put on the MC. Then they give you the rewards in the form of a gift card that you can use on your purchases, regular and sale priced.
Better yet, they could do like my LSS and punch your key tag (or give you a plastic card with a bar code like Archiver's used to do) and get it swiped to earn rewards without the fees. I personally feel it is a rip-off.
ETA: I just read the rest of the thread with the other offers. I definitely will not be taking up the offer if it is sent to me. If it is marketing test, will those who pay a fee get their money back if they decide to offer this as a "FREE" membership? |

Absolutely not. M's pricing here in Canada is more like robbery. We pay an extra 40% over what you gals are paying in the States and in many cases, 40% more that what lss are charging locally. AS it is I never buy anything unless I have at least a 40% off coupon. At 20% off I still would just shop at my lss even if I had to drive an hour. I certainly wouldn't pay a membership fee of any kind. There is nothing I need that bad that I can't get elsewhere cheaper.

I got the offer that is $4.99 for a year. All I get is 10% off regular priced items. But I may get it, only because after doing the math I figure that the discount on the first $50 I spend pays for the membership. It's not that hard to spend $50 at Michaels!

My offer came today
19.99/year
40% off one item every time I shop
55% off framing
1 pt for every $1/ $10 gift card for every 2000 points
I did the math and the cost of membership comes out to .39 cents a week. I think it may cost me more for ink and paper when I print several coupons per week!
It would be more than worth the 19.99 if were to stop distributing coupons.
I just hope if I join, that M's continues to get new products. I know they just added some awesome product; but the last reset stayed the same for years!!!!

I won't PAY any company to be a part of their REWARDS program...rewards to me means they are rewarding me for being a loyal customer..a reward shouldn't cost. And yes I know other companies also have you pay and I don't go to their stores. I go to Borders vs BN cuz I won't pay for a rewards program. Costco membership is different in that you know it is a "club" and you get discounted items for a yearly fee. Michaels isn't proposing being a "club".
It will be interesting to see what comes of this marketing test of theirs...

What I also noticed was a special "members only coupon" available on Scrappin' Cricut's blog (she posts all the craft stores weekly coupons there). I wonder if this coupon will just be in addition to the regular e-mail coupons. I also wonder if you you must have your Membership card present to take advantage of it.

I'm not so sure that the points would roll over since your membership is only for a year, I guess then you have to renew each year.
I think I would pass on it. It would take quite a few trips to make up what you were saving with your 40% off for it to actually pay for the membership fee.

True, but it totally depends on how often you shop at M's in a year. It breaks down to $2 a month. I know with the number of 40%off coupons I would use in a month that I would save WAY more than the $2 it cost me in a membership fee.
Don't buy into it if you think it's a ripoff. I know for me, it would pay for itself. |

When I posted this last night, I didn't think there would be many different offers! The only reason I was considering it was b/c my offer gives 20 points for every $1 spent, and I can spend $$ at M's. I noticed the other offers for 1, 5 or 10 points for every $1. I guess they charge a little more (24.99) to get more points. hmmmm.... I've gotta work some math here.

so let me see if i understand this. for the $24.99 offer, you have to spend at least $250.00 just to break even on the $24.99 membership fees. after you spend the first $250, you have to spend another $200 before you get the $10 GC. you can offset the $24.99 cash layout with the savings from any 40% off items but still, if you are working towards the GC, you have to lay out $450 before you see a dime. do i have that right? |

Interesting all the different offers. I got the 10% off offer that was a free membership. I went ahead and signed up for it, since it didn't cost me anything. I couldn't find the fine print about how to use a 40% off coupon, if I would still get the 10% or not on the rest of my purchase.
I would have rather got one of the other offers that had the 40% off, even if I had to pay. With all the $ I spend at Michaels in a year it would pay for itself.
But I figure there are plenty of times I have a lot of small items that are just a dollar or two each so the 10% off would give me more of a discount then the 40% off of one item.
Still if they are doing this for marketing research with all the different offers, I would guess that the free membership offer will have the most takers, because what would you have to lose? Compared to any of the offers that you had to pay for. |

I got the same offer as Vicky. I noticed we are both in Chicago so may the offers differ by region. Maybe it's not being offered in all regions?
I get their weekly emails so I think that is how I am on their list.
While $9.99 isn't much, I'm not sure I want to pay it for their membership. I'm hoping if enough people ignore it, they may offer it for free for the first year. Kinda like a magazine subscription, when you don't renew at their first "great" renewal rate, you usually get a much better deal later on. |

The information is on their message board here. They say its a select few members that they are doing this trail run with. IMO if we are willing to put the $$ in to the annual fee then anyone should be able to join. I didn't get an invite but would definately join in the program becuase I tend to NOT shop at M's becuse there is nothing in return, whereas the LSS has rewards programs and my purchases actually go toward something.

you do know that AC Moor has a free rewards program and they give you 1 point for every dollar you spend and a GC once you reach 200 points. Just go to their web site to see the details. |
