I want to choose my words carefully. Forgive me if I don't because I have a busy day here and not a lot of time to triple check.
I heard from Donna yesterday. She thanked me for posting updates. And she did apologize. She apologized for hurting me in my time of trouble.
I read her blog post. I know most of you aren't satisfied but I am. She's most definitely been hurt by this. BOTH in her business and personally. She has taken the remarks to heart. And she has grown from the experience. How could she not.
Now I know you say too little, too late. And so much more- but I do believe in the power of the universe. I believe we all have lessons to learn while we're here. I think the universe taps on our shoulder and if we don't listen, it taps harder. DD was pummeled.
Some don't like what she said or how she said it. Don't we all have a relative that other people don't "get". He/she says or does things not as we would but overall we know they mean well and we move on.
I think we can all agree that Donna can't possibly come out of this untouched in some way. And even the most skeptical knows that the financial possibilities of this event could "touch" her.
I don't want her to have financial ruin. I don't want her to get on her hands and knees. She apologized. She has a huge week ahead of her and she's had her share of stress. We don't act ourselves when we are highly stressed. I can attest to that.
I don't know her. But she's a person. So am I. So instead of "Team Sharon" (which is hysterical btw) maybe we could have a Team Sisterhood. We're all here on the planet for the long haul. Let's forgive and forget and enjoy the rest of the ride.

I just wanted to quickly add that I did receive a heartfelt apology from Kandi. She was very kind & I believe sincere in her email and she is- like all of us- human, too. I thought you should all know.
update #2
wow. I decided to go and hang with my girlie last night since dh was out for the evening and I am completely overwhelmed with all of the responses. I am truly touched. I am in awe of the kind words and well wishes offered. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I did get my tuition refunded. It was unexpected. I am grateful. Thank you, Donna.
This is where I should probably shut up and go about my day. But I do want to just add a couple of things. (i hear that Lost in Space robot shouting *warning* in my head)
I did apologize to Donna when we spoke yesterday. I didn't realize how large this would become. Again, I am not into confrontation and this thread surprised me. I don't like to cause anyone harm. I didn't want her to be dragged down. That wasn't going to make me feel better. It was not my intention of posting this in the first place. I was looking for support and I SURE got it. Thank you!
I saw that Kandi said I posted this before hearing from anyone on their side. I feel it necessary to say that is untrue. I feel like my character is at stake there. I tried to resolve this and I have 3 emails from her prior to me posting anything. I didn't have a phone number so I emailed. And that's where it started.
Lastly, we all agree that the eye cancer poster is wretched. That poster- while the remarks themselves were beyond most of our comprehension- hit me particularly hard. I have been given a list of possible complications. One is they may have to remove the membrane by my eye. My eyeball could shift in my head. My eyesight could be diminished or I could experience blindness. There's actually more but you get the idea. I have a feeling Kathy will be looking for that poster at the event to give her some life sensitivity training.
I sure am scared about Tuesday. I will surely let you know how I am after the surgery. I am supposed to be hospitalized for a couple of days. I do try to keep it all in perspective and realize there are people out there with much sadder tales. I get to fight my cancer. So thank you. All of you!
*********************
Donna called me. She was very kind. And very sympathetic to my situation. There was a misunderstanding on the yahoo board, it seems. Someone over there decided to defend me in a lengthy post and it misconstrued the info. And I had nothing to do with that.
She did explain their policy and why it's in place. The money has already been spent. They pay teachers, supplies, travel, etc. It is a business after all.
I just want to move on. I have a lot on my plate. I need to get myself mentally prepared for what lies ahead. And I have an 8 yr old here that needs me.
Thank you all for your support. I am touched that so many care. And thank you, Donna for calling.
******************************
this just sucks in so many ways
I was diagnosed with sinus cancer. I have been through the hoops of tests and all that crap that goes along with it.
Each time I was told "you'll have surgery within the next 2 weeks" it ended up being longer.
So, I had plans to go to the Donna Downey Inspired event. I was meeting AKathy there. We haven't seen each other in a couple of years. I was excited and knowing the scheduling of my tests and the timing, I was hoping to go to the event and then have surgery.
Well, it is cancer after all and my surgeon wants to do it on the 5th.
I contacted Inspired folks and they have no emergency medical cancellation policy. As a matter of fact, I'm not even allowed to sell it or give it away either. They will send me the kits. I have spent $630 and they will send me kits. She said they have already ordered the supplies so that is how it goes. Yeah, I know my luck is bad. And the hits just keep on coming.
My friend sent me a link to a yahoo group for Inspired. I went on hoping to sell my spot but as I was accepted to the group, I heard from the Inspired folks that I am out of luck. Can't sell it or give the spot away. I posted on the yahoo board about this. I was very surprised/disappointed/shocked etc. Now I guess since I rocked the happy boat, they have now kicked me off that board with out so much as a word. I am not being bitchy. I am not trying to piss anybody off. I am just frustrated.
I have someone in the vicinity of the event that might want to go. I am going to take the kits since it's all I can get. But really, does this surprise anyone else? I can prove I am having surgery. I can prove the diagnosis. I am not looking for a freebie. Can't they just charge me for the materials?
It just makes me sad. I don't want cancer. I want to go to Inspired and maybe I am just having a pity party. Thanks for listening.
(sorry I can't go with you Kathy!!!)

I am beyond pissed over this.
We booked last August and paid then. How can anyone foresee something like cancer? And yes, I understand that they need a policy so that people don't flake out on them. But cancer? C'mon Donna, you can do better than that!
If I didn't have that $630, $554 for my flight and about $175 in supllies already invested, I'd just stay home too. |

The participant agrees and acknowledges that the Event may be canceled due to acts of God, strikes, fires, floods, explosions, acts of war, civil disorders, acts of government agencies or authorities, other enemy action, illness, or other causes beyond Downey's reasonable control. If the Event is canceled due to such a cause, the participant agrees and acknowledges that no refund of any portion of the payment for the Event shall be made and Downey shall have no liability whatsoever to the participant.
from donnadowney.com
So if she gets sick and cancels, she keeps all of your money?
Seems pretty crappy to me.

I know several concerts here lately have required the ticket buyer to bring the credit card to the event to complete the ticket purchase so that scalpers can't buy tickets and re-sell them - trying to beat the scalpers at their own game. But honestly, is their a roving band of scrapbook scalpers that is fencing scrapbooking tickets?? For real? And what happenend to oh....humanity.......goodness.... break a rule once in a while to help out a fellow human being. I would not be dealing with this organizaiton any more just on principle. There is policy and there is extending human kindness to someone going through a hard time. I can understand why they don't want someone buying up spots and reselling them but the person who made the rules can break them if they really want to.
It's disgusting that they won't even let her send someone in her place. I always hear people talk about how the scrapbooking community comes together and supports each other but I guess they forget to tell Donna Downey about it.
And the cancellation policy for acts of God? No refunds or rescheduling at all? WTF? |

because my peas love drama... I have more to add
I was kicked off the yahoo board because it was a board created to encourage one another and what not,- not to tear down Donna, Bill or Kandi. I didn't tear down any of them in my posts- just asked what else I could do. Others responded and I guess some of them were harsh (don't know for a fact since I couldn't read them) and as a result, I was kicked off the board. I guess cancer is a bad thing to talk about.
So, my friend came to bat for me when someone mentioned
"NONE of us are privy to the full situation of any of the parties involved in this situation and most certainly are in no place to judge what decisions have or have not been made. "
so my friend responded
Well, actually I AM privy to to Sharon's full situation as she is one of my best friends and we were planning to attend Inspired together. I just think it's wrong that given her situation she is not allowed to sell or give away her spot. How could she have known she'd have to have cancer surgey now way back last August when we booked this? Trust me, she'd mush rather be meeting me in NC than going down to have major surgery on her face for cancer.
I do understand that DD LLC does need to have a policy in place to prevent people from flaking at the last minute. However, Sharon is not trying to flake out and can prove it.
And I do get that this board was created to get to know one another, etc. But I also think those attending should be aware of what's going on behind the scenes too.
I guess you'll never hear the rest of the story because Sharon's been blocked from this board. I suppose I will be too but I had to stick up for my friend. She also has a lot on her plate and shouldn't have to lose $630 on top of it.
I love her. She's just peaved for me. But wait until you read one of the responses to THAT

I can't believe they won't let you transfer your ticket--that's really crappy. I don't see why letting you sell/give it to someone would hurt them in any way. I can see both sides here, I really can. But and it's a big but, you are not going to cause them to loose any money but transfering your ticket, you will probably bring them in more money because the person going will probably spend. I sent her an email.
I think you should post this on The Pub board, too.

Not sure if this way would be better, but have you tried calling Bill about the situation? If I remember right, when I got my "welcome" call from him, he said to call back w/ questions, concerns, etc. Also, from the email I saw yesterday from Kandi, I think she's a bit overwhelmed and stressed dealing with Inspired right now, so she may just be doing the "it's policy" because of that.
As for the yahoo group, I'm way behind in my emails there and am in complete shock over the kind of responses you got!!!! I was excited to go, but now I'm really questioning spending 4 days with someone who would act that way (or ban you for asking questions).

I sent an email and included the response from the Yahoo board. I told Donna I was sorry that her event was attracting this type of person. |

I agree with Emleyth; I think you need to contact Donna or Bill personally. Kandi is the "go-to" organizer person this year; and she's buried with last minute prep. It really sounds like you got the standard operating procedure's answer.
I really think that once Donna knows the exact situation, things will change. Until you have something firm with her name on it, I wouldn't want to bash her or the event.
On the business side, they need to keep their head count, so they would need some recompense if your spot isn't filled; especially since the kits cost something. But if your spot is filled from the waiting list, and based on your medical reasons, you should be successful at making a case for getting a refund.

Does it say anywhere in their agreement that you cannot send someone else or sell your spot or is that just what they're telling you? Because if it's not in the agreement, how can they stand by it? |

Pe@ce, sorry about your cancer. Best wishes.
That "we can cancel for any reason and no refund" policy just frosts my cookies! That's just greed, pure and simple. At the very least, if they cancel, they should pony up the refunds.
However, I have also been caught in the situation of not reading the boilerplate and been in the situation of not getting a refund, though not for anywhere near as much money. That's why I'm once bitten, twice shy.
I really hope you get your money back. **crossing Donna Downey off my list** |

I'm so sorry. The situation sucks all the way around. And the person who sent that response is incredibly cruel and heartless.
I'll be praying for your healing. |

I would actually be surprised to find out if Donna herself knows this is going on. I bet Kandi just answered your email and didn't let her know about it.
I am sure she would not want this kind of negative publicity.
I have attended one of her classes in the past and have made a purchase from her website. I found both her and her husband to be great to deal with. However, if they refuse to let you sell your spot (at the very least) I will NEVER do business with them again.
I'm off to send an email. |

I am so sorry that you are going thru this. I posted when you shared about your pending surgery and have kept your health in my prayers.
I have sent an email to the DD link someone provided. I tried to keep it business like and explained why I thought they should allow you to sell/give away your ticket. (extra $ to them if a person actually shows up due to spin off spending)
I hope they reconsider.
Good luck and prayers for Tuesday.

I just sent an email to a friend who is teaching at that event to see what she recommends and hopefully can help with. Not guaranteeing anything but I know my friend will be very upset at this like I am.
