Anyone know what the Girl Scout Gypsy badge from 1960s-1970s was?

I recently came across my Girl Scout sash and wondered about the "Gypsy" merit badge that I earned in the early 1970s. Does anyone remember what that badge was all about?

Thanks!

Oh! I had that one! (Had to google it, though, to remember.)

I can't find why it's called the Gypsy but perhaps it has to do with traveling...moving around...I moved around a lot as a kid (or "traveled" ) and maybe that's how I got that one.

But I don't really know.

Will ask my mom, i remember having that one, it was one of the outdoors badges that included lighting a fire with one match. Really sad that we lost all my girl scout stuff during one of our many moves.

Thanks for checking with your Mom! I'm surprised I couldn't find a description or the requirements online...

I had that one too, but I can't remember what we did. I couldn't find an online description, but I'll keep looking.

Oh the memories of girl scouts. Just pulled out my girl scout sash. Isn't the gypsy badge the one with a red/white polka dot sack like bag tied to a stick?

I have that badge also! Bwahaha! I'm surprised that I didn't keep my handbook, but I don't have it.

I'll ask some of the gals who were in my brownie troop, LOL! I bet one of them will remember!

The book I have is from 1963 and says:
Purpose: to be able to plan and go on an all day hike

I can scan the page for you if you send me your email address

I had it too!

I think it was things like hiking, making foil packet meals, hobo stew, things like that.

I have that badge! Not too long ago, I found my Cadette vest with all my badges and patches on it. I don't know what I did with my handbook!

My mother has a pretty good memory for her age, she was a leader for many years.

She confirms, red bandana tied to a stick and the theme was day hikes, planning the route, packing enough water, cooking a meal on the run. Gosh, thinking back, learned lots and lots in the scouts about all kinds of things. Buying the patches was not cheap either, always had to drain my piggy bank to add them but really enjoyed the sense of accomplishment.

Hey former Girl Scouts! I found this cool site the other day after I bought some vintage badges I didn't recognize at an antique store and wanted to know what they were. They don't list the requirements, but have pictures of all the badges from 1928 on, as well as lots of other interesting things: Girl Scout Museum
