The Organize Your Stuff Challenage is great! I so needed this. Thanks Wookie Mouse! I don't have as many little embelishments I guess. I have 1 container I got at Hobby Lobbby a couple of years ago & they do still have them. It's great for eyelets/brads/photo turns/photo spirals & charms. The container is round, has a white core & I got mine with a red handle. Its easy to take to crops. It has 5 clear boxes that snap to the core(upright). The boxes are hard to get off the core but each box has a lid & they open easy. Each box has 5 compartments. The lid is tight enough so nothing goes from one compartment to another. You can see whats in each box & in each compartment. And you can organize by color & type. The inside of the core is hollow & has a lid. Open this & there is a round tray to store more. That is divided in to 5 compartments. This tray comes out & there is space to store other small items like a small ruler, scissors, pen. This item was under $10 too. I love it & have thought of getting another.

Ok, this week is about the containers. I have to be hardcore and get rid of my well-intentioned containers and get some more functional ones. Those little twist top jars look great,as I hate the divided trays. seems that eyelets like to slide under the dividers and visit the other colors. Shopping..Woohoo.

Hobby- Hasn't every week been about the container?? hahaha

I am very interested in how everyone sorts-- I made the decision when we started this challenge to change over to sorting by color (GASP) and have slowly been working toward that while we have sorted other things.
I really hope I am making the right decision because it will really be a pain to change back.

I did not include Brads or eyelets-They each have a drawer and are sorted by color already.

I did have a question that maybe I should have addressed during paper week. What do you guys do with transparencies? I seem to have collected a few 12x12 sheets of printed transparancies (never think to use them though) Currently they are on the same shelf that I keep pattern paper that I keep sorted by manufacturer (I sort by color for most, but I do keep BG and Scenic route packs together until I use a far amount of it)

Also if you sort by color do you have a space for Clear? I have some clear circles and buttons that I am not sure where to put?? (amazing how one little thing can bog you down!)

Oh, I get a week of rest! I like my embellishment organization so I can work on stuff I haven't finished instead.

My brads, eyelets, rhinestones etc are stored in watchmaker tiny circle tins and sit inside the 3 drawer cubes from Michaels. In my Fiskars rolling cart I store the empty "outer tin boxes" they sit in and use those to house the little tins I select to bring to a crop.

I have 3 sizes of the watchmaker tins so use the larger ones to store crystal words, word brads, fancy brads like shoes and dresses, large jewels, metal alphas, rings, etc.
I store largeer flowers in square glass jars with brushed silver lids from the dollar store. Primas are in fancy glass jars that sit on top of the square jars.

Buttons are in spice jars that sit on black wooden shelves with fancy metal scroll work on top. Each shelf thingy holds 4 spice jars. I have 5 of the wooden, scrolly shelves and just have to get them hung up this week.

If I ever learn to post pictures, I will update. I wish this course came with a tutorial on how to post pictures!!!

If you want to post pictures in the thread you have to have it hosted somewhere and then use peacode IMAGE right above where you click submit. Photobucket is one place you can host an image.

If you just want to show us something upload it into the gallery. And tell us you put it there.. we will go peak. The gallery has super easy directions on uploading. But if you need more help just give a shout!

Dancing Fish Thanks so much for the advice.
Sounds like posting to the gallery is easier...if I post to the gallery, do I need to go thru photobucket first?

I really want to post some pics of all the work I have been doing!
My daughters have helped me with anything of the heavy stuff and it is starting to look so much better. i have found some great sales on organizational things...p[ictures are easier to show that a zillion words!

Dancingfish, I store my clear in with my white(s).

This week for sure is about the containers for me. The ones I have are too small now. My eyelets are in those tic-tac boxes (like those), my brads need a home out of their packages. Jars may be nice but then again baggies may be easier to store. My buttons, the few I have are divided by color in a divided organizer. Rhinestones are still in their packages. Other "confetti" type things are in a big jar, since I dont' use them too much.

What do you all do about new embellishments? Do you take them out of the package as soon as they get home or do you wait until you open them to add them in?

scrapymo-if you upload to the gallery you do not need to go through photobucket (or another site) just upload off your computer. (in the drop down menu for Member Gallery (next to message boards) the last one is upload a new project, click and it'll walk you through it.

I just sorted all my flowers into baby food jars by color and have them lined up on a spice rack i just bought. loving this! Brads have been in smaller baby food jars (can you see a theme here lol) on a lazy susan type thing DH built (still needs paint...a year or two later). Went through and sorted most of them by color today. that was kinda scary-hope I like it better. Got the big bite a couple months ago so I only have one small pack of eyelets right now. Buttons are just a hodge-podge. I don't think i want to sort them by color I don't have very many. I do have a few large brads some are photo corners others are just long w/ a phrase on them. I have them in a container I got some chipboard letters in but still working on odds and ends like that. I'll get some pics posted eventually.

Hobby-
I generally keep anything new on my bullitin board for awhile. To remind me to use it and so I can lovingly look at it! hahaha. Up until now I have always kept everything in its package-- but since I am changing over to a color sort I removed packaging. I think I will do that once it comes off the bullitin board.

Thanks for the tip on clears with white.

Mickey- Love the idea of Babyfood Jars--They are the right size for so many things we "collect"--- and now is the time to paint your lazy susan!!

I'm kind of relieved this is an easy week for me - it will give me a chance to catch up on kits and photos. I'm happy with my current systems for embellishments. maybe the photos will help someone else

I am happy with my embellishment organization, which is good because I have a lot of work to do to get my scrap area back up and running. I've got a sleeping baby on one arm, so I'm just going to link up my blog post:

Bree's cheapo embellishment storage

ETA:

What do you all do about new embellishments? Do you take them out of the package as soon as they get home or do you wait until you open them to add them in?

Depends. Items that match a paper line or seem too fragile get left in packaging, everything else gets unpackaged and dumped in the bag.

Transparencies with other specialty papers (KI Sheer Delights, Lace, Bling, die cut papers) in a CH paper folder.

Also if you sort by color do you have a space for Clear? I have some clear circles and buttons that I am not sure where to put?? (amazing how one little thing can bog you down!)

Clear is with white b/c it can be altered with ink/paint.

This is the one area I have organized, when I began scrapping I purchased several of these in different sizes for all my hard embellishments.

http://www.instawares.com/10164-grey-64-drawer-storage-cabinet.ak1-10164.0.7.htm#gallery

I also use these for brads, eyelets, buttons,

Jars for flowers

clear Plastic ribbon boxes for ribbon

I did relabel all of them/ so I am good for embellishments!!!

Yea!!!!!

AJ- Love love love your containers! I just bought a printer tray that I wanted to sort by color in but after I got it home realized that I didn't have a flat place for it! so Its going on the wall.

Your Ice Cream bowls are darn cute!!
I love to dig through supplies and your room is set up perfectly for me!

Where did you get the peice with drawers? It looks similar to a library card holder but I am thinking maybe it was meant for CD's?

so much fun to see all of the different storgae systems. simplyparticular, yours looks great! I really like the rails. simple design, but very effective and easy to see stuff.

scrapnpea, yours looks great, too. I imagine its fun looking through all of those little drawers.

Does anyone use one of these? or the one by Stampin up?

craft carousel

I already have a bunch of the cups as I used to be a SU demo. I would like to keep those but find a way to store more than I have on my peg board.

I'm running behind, but I'll read the back posts and view all of your pics tonight.

i love how everyone has thier own solutions, so many choices for this catergory!

Jo-I love that craft carousel. I've never seen one quite like that.

SimplyParticular-I think it's a great idea to keep clear with white BECAUSE they're both easily alterable. never thought of it that way.

Ok- So I have two sterilte drawers (the bottom big ones) that have turned into junk drawers over time. As we have moved through the challenges I have stuck my hands in there a few times.. Well last night I realized I had a few rolls of Heidi Swapp tape and some binder tape from 7 gypsies. I consider this an embellishment... where/how are you storing this??

And fess up you have a junk drawer too??? right??

dancingfish - I used to have a junk bin - one of those soft sided ones that fits in the cubes. I did empty it out recently though.

do you have somewhere you could hang a dowel, rod or paper towel holder for the tape? not sure how big of a collection you have

I'm still pushing through this week. It went too fast. I'm still agnozing over the packaged stuff. Not sure If I want to open them up. I probably should since its part of the problem. Ugghh.

New question: Do you all take the brads and eyelets that come in the multicolor packages and separate them into color or would you leave them together (pastels etc)?

Hobby- I store brads in two different ways-- The ones that come in the MM little clear round holders stay in there. Ones from other sources I put in these little watchmaker tins (I think thats what they are called) and they are stored by color grouping... REDS/Pinks, Blues Light/Dark, All Metal colored are together. Black and White together. And the same with eyelets. I really don't use either that often anymore and don't feel the need to sort them down further. I think if they were a staple in my daily scrapping I might want them sorted more.

I too have had to push myself to take things out of packaging and so far I am happy with it. I am realizing that maybe I should have gone up a size in the sterlite drawers I purchased for my color sorting. But then again maybe this will make me use up more and not horde as much.

Last night I sorted my two junk drawers and took out things that could be stored in other places in my house. I am down to a small pile of items that need to find a home. And I labeled my embellishment drawers last night!! Whoo--

Hobby-I was trying to keep things together by package--take it out of actual package and dump into baby food jars that I store brads in, but this week I sorted them plain ones by color. I hope I like it! I still have fancier (for lack of a better word) ones seperated by style i guess but we'll see if that stays or if they get the color treatment too...

I've taken lots of stuff out of packages (especially when I filled my printers tray) and never regretted it. Somehow that doesn't translate to kits - I have a difficult time breaking them down. LOL

Just talked to the owner of the lss where I dropped off stuff for a yard sale. I sold $160! so excited, I think just a small fraction is coming back home.

I'm going to a crop tomorrow night at the store, so it will be fun to go shopping. The printers tray just sits on top of my shelves. My room is in the attic and the shelves are on both sides under the kneewall. hopefully that makes sense. DH finally finished putting the molding back on the walls and as soon as we do a couple of other finishing touches, I'll post pics.

this challenge inspired me to change-up some organization in my scrap room. I took all of my Primas out of their jars something I though I'd never EVER do. Had the kids help me seperate them into color groupings and went to Ikea and bought some large glass jars with lids. I like the looks, now just need to figure out where they'll be displayed and get one more jar. I did the same thing for my brads and placed them in the little Prima bottles that came with small decorative shelves.

I'm not sure what to do with some of the embellishments I have. For instance, I rarely use eyelets anymore but have them all sorted out in those watchmaker tins in major OCD fashion. I'm not usually particularly good at making quick decisions, so we'll have to see how it goes...

I want to redo my ribbon storage but the cost is prohibitive, I'd want/need like 4 of those Pull EZ ribbon purses. And then I keep wondering what in the world am I to do with the organizers I was previously using? Seems like a waste to get rid of them but I do prefer the out in the open/accessible/visible method.

As for the junk drawer question....one of those plastic drawer carts I have has been turned into a sort of RoyGBiv junk organizer. Since I started organizing bits and pieces this way I have found I use them more often, hence I jumped right into this challenge head-on. O fcourse, I have a feeling it will take me far longer than one week to get it all done.

Twink-I redid my ribbon a couple weeks ago. I got the ribbon ring. I tried making my own but figured out that it wasn't worth the time and effor to save $10.

Ribbon Ring

You could always sell your "old" storage items.

Take your time with the challenge, I keep finding pictures around the house that need sorted. it's a work in progress.

mjmone - your embellishments look great! I love the little tray of smooches & stickles. so much fun glitter! I know what you mean about having everything in one spot. I've been working on an album for my niece and I love that I can find all of my embellishments and journaling stuff. I'm not wasting a lot of time looking for something. My kits are still a mess, but I'm working on that.

Mjmone- Thanks for sharing! It is amazing things we previously thought would be "bad" (taking primas out of containers) are actually working!! I had to laugh when I read on your blog that you are using something from when your DD was in college. ME too! I am repurposing a hutch type thing from her dorm room!

I know that every week we have a topic but its hard not to work ahead because when you touch one product you end up moving something else. I too think I need to rework my ribbon.. but I am going to wait until ribbon week before I make any decisions. And Mickeygirl-- No matter how much I think I have completed one of our tasks little bits and pieces get found... I just discovered some 5x7 pictures that need to find a home.

had a little hitch in my progress this week. My 4 year old who I thought was playing with his trains upstairs dumped out all of my embossing powder, glitter and some paint. I think he felt really bad so it was hard to be mad at him, but he did make a huge mess

Ouch, AJ. Gotta love kids and their curiousity.

Well, I'm stalled too. Not enough time this week to tackle the unfinished stuff and go shopping. I'll still be working on it next week.

I had all of my mags in a wide mag holder. Loved it. But now my collection has grown. I got an idea to hang some locker theme pockets on my storage closet doors. I don't know why I hadn't thought to do it before now. I purchased them on clearance at CVS for my sons room and then found they didn't work too well for him. Now I'll free up the holder for my 8x11 CS. Then on to the small papers and pattern papers.

Well I am going to try this again...tried to post before and it didn't work.

Here are some of the things I use to organize!

Rolling tote

Embellishment storage

More embellishment storage

I don't have a scraproom, so I have to bring things out to my diningroom to scrap. This makes it easier.

ETA~I don't usually keep pushpins in there, I think I was trying to hide them from the kids!!

Well this is something I'm pretty good on except for I haven't filed away my most recent (last 6 months) purchases. I use bead cases for my non-adhesive backed bling, a tackle box I purchased from Fleet Farm that is the bigger version of the green/blue scrap totes I've seen at M's and A's, and jars. I should go through everything and reorganize/purge/ect but I'll put that on the list of to do's should I have get bored. Ha!

i'm using these rubbermaid 6x6 clear boxes for storage from staples. they come in sets of 2 or 4 drawers within one box. i just mix-matched them according to what i needed. i love that they are clear and everything is at your fingertips.

a few photos:

have fun organizing, it's one of my favorite things to do!

I just came across this thread. I have been reorganizing my craft space and there are so many helpful tip and ideas here. Stacy your blog is awesome - so many great ideas. WHile I probably won't participate in the challenges I am bookmarking this thread for reference. Thanks for the inspiration.

I'm on several diets. I don't get enough food on just one.

Has anyone else pulled out all their embellishments and spread them out all over the place, trying to figure out a system that works (based on color), and suddenly you feel so overwhelmed at the mess you've created, that you want to scream?

Or is that just me?

I did!! and I can tell you what worked for me was to grab tupperware containers out of the kitchen and sort them in the containers!! I ran out of containers that I was srounging the house for any acceptable small box!!! But I worked!

Uh.. NO! After looking at all the pictures, I've decided I'm way down on embellies and need to go shopping! j/k

I'm STILL working on my paper stash but making progress, working on ideas but making progress, and finding random pictures as I go through things.

I've been in limbo over furniture for so long and have stuff scattered everywhere. I'm slowly going through it all and paring down.

I have those round containers that stack (like SU sells) for brads, eyelets and buttons, stickers in deco file folders from CM that fill a bucket, and letter stickers in a file. Not sure if I'm changing any of it as I already own this. I am looking at a carousel of some sort to hold all of the round containers that hold my brads. I asked if anyone used those and didn't hear anything back so I guess not many use it.

I think your not alone. We have all created a mess at some point in this challenge. Dancing is right get some small containers or even baggies to do the "pre-sort": my version of brainstorming in action, then I sort: into what I think is a great idea, then there is a final sort which is the rational working version. That's my crazy organizing.

Good luck with the embellishments, I'm still working on paper and ideas.
