HERE IS A LINK
I'd copy the whole blog post here but it's kinda long.
I'm NOT happy and will be venting in a blog post of my own tonight or tomorrow. What do you think of the planned changes? |

At least they're not going out of business.
The changes don't sound that bad to me. I'd at least have to see them before I ranted about them.

My heart sank when I read your thread title - I immediately thought the news would be that they were going out of business. As long as they don't become another CK I'm sure I'll still be happy with the mag. |

Seems like they are trying to keep pace with a changing market. Sounds good to me. Also, I don't use an iphone, but that app sounds pretty cool too. They are probably doing what needs to be done so that they don't go under like so many others.
Which part(s) of their changes do you think will be a problem?

OP here.....Sorry to scare you all! I'll try to change the thread title.
I agree on the iPhone app...that sounds cool. Unless I'm misunderstanding, it sounds like they're going from a magazine that's primarily about scrapbooking to one that will be a mixture of SB, papercrafting, cardmaking, and home dec.
In my rant (lol), I will include that I understand it's a sign of the times/survival...but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it, right? I enjoy my plain ol' scrapping mags and at this point, there are only 2 left. Now it will be 1.5 or 1.25. |

Frankly, these changes sound great to me. Personally, I do much more than just scrap pages, and I look forward to more ideas for a variety of things in the magazine. And as for the ScrapApp - I LOVE IT!! What a cool idea. Shows that they have some people who are able to think out of the box. Good for them! |

I really don't see why you are so unhappy.
Here is a list of the changes they will be making:
New features include:
•Redesigned cover: A new logo, tagline (create*share*remember), hallmark creative page designs from top designers, and prominent display of “etc.†projects are designed to add interest and promote newsstand sales.
•Updated features and departments: Distinct department pages call attention to helpful hints, designer tips and other insights; Dynamic feature layouts add energy and simplify navigation throughout the issue.
•Enhanced scrapbooking pages: Including rich photography; bigger scrapbooking layouts and more detail shots; larger step-by-step technique photos; top tips and ideas; product shots near corresponding layouts for easy shopping; “How Do I?†call-outs that anticipate and answer reader questions; special icons to help readers save time, money and more.
•Etc., Etc., Etc.: To take scrapbooking enthusiasts to the next level with their craft and entice other crafters into the Scrapbooks etc. community, the magazine is introducing:
o Inspired new projects for preserving memories, showcasing photos and creating cards and keepsakes
o Projects such as pencil holders, artwork, and much more—all made using scrapbooking skills and supplies
o Step-by-step instructions and visual detail to ensure project success
“We’re all about giving current and prospective scrapbooking enthusiasts everything they need—right down to the finest detail—to help them enjoy and advance their craft,†Rubin says. “The new Scrapbooks etc. has as many scrapbooking ideas as ever, and now include the latest, emerging trends in preserving and sharing memories.â€
First-ever mobile scrapbooking application rolls out:
Also unveiled today, a sneak peek of the first scrapbooking mobile application for use with Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch devices, ScrapApp, created by Scrapbooks etc. ScrapApp provides consumers the ability to customize their Apple iPhones and iPod Touches with the hottest scrapbooking styles and gives insider scrapbooking inspiration, exclusive coupons and more. Consumers can download wallpapers from the hottest designers as well as make personalized mobile scrapbook pages. Scrapbooks etc. Scrap App will be available on August 3 from Apple’s iTunes Store.
They aren't making huge changes, they are just adding to their already great magazine. I love the idea of large layout photos! Sometimes I want to read the journaling and have to squint my eyes to see what the artist wrote.
I also really like the idea of crafts being shown. I use my paper and supplies for more than just layouts and cards. I also make home decor items like the picture frame QK room wall decoration for my DD's room.
I mean after all the magazine is Scrapboks ETC. I am looking forward to seeing what the add to their already great magazine. Just as long as they dont become CK, I will still buy their mag.
Also love Scrapbook Trends. |

I have mixed feelings. I'm a visual person, so i need to see what the changes will look like in person, and what they will do with them before i decide whether i like them or not. But from what it sounds like i have miced feelings. I think that it's good to branch out to other things such as cards and other paper crafts, as well as keeping up with the changing market, but i do like that it's primarily scrapping at the moment. i really don't know.

As a SCRAPBOOKER, I am not happy. I don't do home dec, I don't use technology beyond my computer, scanner and printer, and - selfish though it may be - I want a dedicated scrapbook magazine.
I also agree that they seem to be going the way of CK. You simply cannot appeal to everybody - much better to keep your niche audience/subscribers happy, than to seek a wider audience and please NOBODY.

I love to scrap but I also like to do many other crafts. I like the idea of making home decor stuff with my scrapping supplies.
I will wait until I see it, but from what I read the changes sound like they will be good.
If there was not interest in other ideas there would not be other things posted in the gallery that are not strictly scrapping stuff like there is here at 2peas.
I will wait until I see the new look before I pass judgement. |

Although I am a "crafter" as well, I got so tired of other magazines becoming all about cards and altered objects. I just want my SCRAPBOOK stuff!

I kind of agree with Cat E. Clysm. I really long for a dedicated Scrapbooking magazine.
For example, I was very upset when Paper Trends became Simply Handmade. It seemed that the actual paper projects were few and far between, and things like making a dress out of a pillow case, or cutting out a felt hamburger took precedence. If I wanted to sew, I'd buy a sewing magazine. So, I canceled it right away.
However, I will keep an open mind. The changes so far, don't sound too bad on the surface. We'll see how it evolves and then ask me in about 3 months how I like it. I may be pleasantly surprised. I'm hoping so, since out of all the mags, it's always been my favorite. |

I do a lot more than just scrapbook with all of these piles of supplies I buy, so I love seeing a wide range of ideas all in one, affordable place. I love SBE and I have counted on them to be more than just scrapbooking, so I am excited that this is going to be even more of a focus now. |

I want a scrapbook magazine. That is why I subscribed to Scrapbooks Etc. and cancelled CK. They were getting too artsy fartsy for my liking.
What I want from SE is more two page layouts. I know a lot of people do one pagers with one photo but I'm one that does two pagers with at least six photos or more. I want to see more of that not how I can use left over scraps for home decor.

I don't like this. We have plenty of magazines for other paper crafts, but our scrapbooking ones are dissappearing. We need more scrapbooking, not less.
I do like to do other stuff sometimes, but I have about 3 other magazines that has that in it. I use Scrapbooks, etc and CK for scrapbooking.
I guess if they put in too much, it will be just CK for me and they are getting far from scrapbooking also.PaperCrafts and Crafts N Things does a great job of covering other crafts, I don't need another like it. Not to mention Scrap N Stamp, Create and Decorate,CardMaker, and on and on, etc.
The iphone app, though sounds awesome! |

I'm not too worried about it. SBE hasn't been rockin my world for awhile now. I'm probably not the only one that's stopped picking up every issue and maybe their sales is reflecting that and pushing them to make some changes. I don't think they'll go the route of a craft catch-all mag. I expect to see a Jennifer McGuire approach to innovative uses for sb supplies in related craft projects but the main focus remaining on layouts. I can look at sb pages all day long in the galleries, but a few articles here and there covering outside-of-the-box projects might be interesting. |

I love this magazine and understand their need to change with the times. I don't see what can come of me forming an opinion before I've actually had a chance to see the new format. I'd rather see them change formats then go out of business. Until I can see the changes for myself I'm giving this publication the benefit of the doubt. I'm one of those who would prefer that they stay on topic...and for me, that's scrapbooking. I don't do much of the other stuff and don't think I would have subscribed to a magazine that isn't dedicated to scrapping. Will wait and see but I'm not thrilled with this news....guess because I can't help but think that if they include a home decor article and one or two about altered items, that's going to mean fewer layouts and fewer articles that relate to scrapbooking. I really like Scrapbooks Etc and hope that continues but I gotta admit, this makes me nervous.

I will reserve judgment for when I see the new magazine, but I really hope that they keep the focus on scrapbooking. There are plenty of magazines dedicated to paper projects, but really Scrapbooks Etc and Scrapbook Trends are the only ones left dedicated to Scrapbooking- and Trends is too expensive (now that M's won't let you use a coupon), so Etc was the one magazine left for me.
I hope they stay true to what made them so successful in the first place!

I think I'll keep my judgement neutral until I see the first issue. It may be an even better magazine than before. We don't know until we see it. In this economy I can see the need for the change. To keep the magazine going they need to open to a wider market. |

I'd love to buy the sb trends magazine, but my budget won't accommodate their steep prices. I loved that magazine, but had to let it go when my subscription was up. They may have priced themselves out of the market. You are right, though, it is a beautiful magazine.
As for the changes with SB etc--if they decrease the issues to 6 a year, and you have a 3 year subscription--you will get several issues LESS than you paid for--thinking you were getting issues more often when you made the subscription--unless that take that into consideration. |

An update on this, in case you haven't seen it. If you look at the link provided by the OP, Michelle Rubin explains that if you were expecting 10 issues, you'll get 10 issues, so we'll get as many as we paid for. There is also a comment option provided if you want to share your thoughts about this announcement.....pro or con, but you might have to register to do that, not sure. I left a comment but I was already registered.
