My challenge is to create a card using the Joseph's Coat Technique. This is a resist technique that looks very impressive. You can upload your card(s) Saturday, Oct. 17 through Sunday, Oct. 25. There will be a RAK; the winner will be chosen randomly.

When you post your card in the gallery, be sure to check the appropriate challenge box. Also, don't forget to come back here to post a link to your gallery post and to share your experience.

My first experience with this technique was pretty awful. Here's a link. My first efforts with Joseph's Coat. I think the problem was the Memories ink. It just wouldn't come off.

Here's a link to the Challenge Blog with all the details.

Here's a link to the Sample Cards.

Good Luck!
Daria

==============Winners==============
Thank you all so much for participating in this challenge. I learned so much from you. I need to make myself a summary of all the inks and papers that worked--and what didn't.

I used a randomized list generator to choose the winners, and they are . . .

meganstamps and Scrappin Mimi!

Congratulations, Ladies. Please pea-mail me with your choice of RAK's, your full name, and your mailing address.

Here are the RAK's.

I'm working on this and I am NOT GIVING UP!! Somehow between my laptop and my craft/dining room table, I thought you said you had trouble with Memento black ink. So I used Memories black, just as you advised us not to! On 4 nice samples. Ugh! What a dummy!! So, I had one brayered piece left and this time I tried Ranger Archival Jet Black. EVEN WORSE!!

So, I am so determined to do this that I brayered up 4 more pieces of glossy card stock. Tomorrow I will try again. I don't think I have any other black inks. I may try a dauber ink, or a dark color dye ink other than black ... or, now I have an excuse to go shopping. I wonder if I would be better off with just a cheapy black dye ink?

I WILL persist! I'm really happy with the images I chose, and if I can ever get the black ink off, I think they will work really nicely! They looked great until I started rubbing. The black ink was beading off the EP, the kaleidacolors were showing through nice and vibrant ... but as soon as I started buffing, it just smeared. It was as if the black inks I chose were somewhat oily. I even tried switching from paper towels to a soft cloth (DH's tighty whities, haha!). That didn't seem to make a difference. I'll get back to you when I have something presentable!

Oh, Cindi, I feel your pain. If you checked out the link to my first efforts, you saw The Blob so you know I understand completely. You should have seen me trying to remove that ink. It didn't even bead up on the embossed image--horrible.

You really do need a dye ink. I've used Adirondack, Nick Bantock, and Distress inks. After all the trouble I had the first time, I was amazed and delighted when it worked like magic this time. There was almost no ink on the embossed image.

Some directions say to wait until the black ink has dried before buffing. I was afraid to let it dry, and it seemed to work fine. After all, dye inks dry quickly.

You can definitely use another color; it doesn't have to be black. Just choose something considerably darker than your background colors.

Go girl!

I created mine yesterday and will post later today. I loved how it turned out! I used the Ranger Distress Inks for everything and I didnt' even have to wipe off my embossing. Although I used my sponges instead of the brayer. I hope that counts. I am not so good with the brayer. I will post later. Can't take pictures until the family is up.

Okay.. Just took pictures and posted... Fall Tag Great challenge Daria!

Are you sure it doesn't matter that I didn't use black ink on this card Daria? I love this technique, it is so much fun and has lots of potential, especially for solid stamps.

Here's my card:

I'll make another one using black ink before SOF is over.

Anna-Karin your card is gorgeous, and it's an example of how to do this without a brayer. It's also good for anyone who wants a more random placement of the colors. In my opinion, it's still Joseph's Coat--lots of color, embossing for the resist, dark ink on the top that is resisted.

The black ink is traditional, but as you showed with your card, any dark ink will work. I changed the directions to allow for dark color inks.

Thank you so much for posting here.

Sue, what kind of cardstock did you use? Was it coated at all? Was it ultra-smooth or matte-kote? I think I have heard of using something besides glossy, but I haven't tried it myself.

Another possibility might be photo paper for printers. Has anyone tried that?

Here's another card I made, with a small piece made when I was playing around with this technique:

Scrapling card

I did both of my two finished projects on white smooth cardstock. My understanding was always that resist works on normal cardstock if you clear emboss it, while if you only use Versamark, it only works on glossy.

There is another Joseph's coat in progress on my desk, I hope to finish it today. This one is done on glossy paper.

Anna-Karin. Thank you for the information about the cardstock. Your scrapling is wonderful.

Looking at all the wonderful posts makes me smile and remember why I started stamping. It was this technique that drew me in.

I'll be away from home most of today, but I'l check back as soon as I return.

Have fun.

Hi, Daria! Started off doing this challenge and got mixed up along the way! Used an alcohol ink background instead of a Kaleidacolor one ... and then realized no inks would cover the background without also covering the clear embossing!

So, I decided to cover the background by wiping a thin layer of acrylic paint over top. I realized that the green alcohol ink background was kinda dark, so I went with white instead of black. Anyway, here is my resulting Butterfly with Ferns card. Don't know if it counts, but it was a happy accident all the same!

Thanks for the inspiration and for hosting challenges and Stamptoberfest!

So I had to try it with black ink on top too, and on glossy paper. Loved the result. I used black distress ink and it didn't stain my brayer at all, washed right off. Here's my card:

Okay I bought new black ink. I am going to get the glossy version to work of this yet. I did make a piece with sivler and gold underneath and covered with black alcohol ink. The only problem is that it doesn't get dark enough.

I am going to try again. I really liked the distress inks but wanted to follow what you had typed up originally.

Well, I finally got around to it. It kind of helped having the Earth challenge to prod me along, so to speak.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of this technique, because I think it wastes ink & I'm really cheap when it comes to ink.

On the other hand, it looks pretty cool when done properly, so maybe I should just un-bend a bit & try it with other stamps & other inks.

Thanks for the challenge, Daria.

Hobbyaholic, I love your mask! I think the J's C technique looks really good on it.

Peggy, I saw how gorgeous your earth card turned out. I bet you do this technique again. The only ink you are wasting is the little bit that rubs off the embossed image. Is that what you're talking about? Oh, I'll bet you're referring to all that colored ink that gets covered up. Right?

Hmmm. You could just sponge some colors on the cardstock where you know you'll be stamping instead of all over the card.

oh my....this technique is SO much fun!!! I've been creating some gorgeous papers this morning...now I just don't want to cut them all up. I've been using the Colorbox dark brown chalk in with great results. Some slight staining to my brayer, but it's worth it for the amazing results... Let me go see what I can come up with for some cards and I'll post the links here when I get them uploaded.

Thanks for such a great challenge!

ok--I'm STILL playing with this technique... Have tons of samples now and I wanted to share what worked (and didn't work) for me.

I used Distress inks and foam applicators to create my background... and I just used plain white cardstock and it worked fine. The thing I found that didn't work with the distress inks was fixable. I just needed to use my heat tool to fully dry the colored cardstock before I stamped my image with versamark and added the embossing powder. When I didn't heat-dry the cardstock first, my powder stuck to the distress ink background (even when I let it set a few minutes hoping it was dry). I also used a static powder bag over my inked background before stamping the image and that made it much easier.

For the ink that covers it all up, I used the Colorbox dark brown chalk ink and the Marvy Matchables black ink both with great results. I did find that it was easier to just go direct to paper with the inkpad and not worry about the brayer step. I just kind of swiped or rubbed the ink over the background until it was dark enough. To wipe the ink off the embossed areas, I just used a baby wipe and that worked fine on the colorbox chalk ink. For the black ink, it made it a little lighter (prob b/c the moisture from the babywipe removed some of the dye ink), but it wasn't too bad.

I do have to say that this makes GREAT background patterns...my favorite one was using a damask pattern. Still haven't cut those up yet... haha

Beautiful cards everyone!

I love this technique, so I made another card. This time I first sponged the glossy paper and then stamped over it with a text stamp, before stamping and clear embossing the image. It added nice extra texture. Here's my card:

Ok--Daria, I've done so many cards with this new technique and I have FALLEN in love. You know I couldn't stay away from it for long...so I made some more cards last night when I was showing the ladies at my crop how to do this and wanted to share. One lady ended up doing a background on kraft paper that was ABSOLUTELY beautiful...I wish I had taken a photo of her finished pieces. So I will have to try using some colored cardstocks for the base too. For these cards, I didn't even use a sponge, I just did direct to paper with the Fired Brick, Scattered Straw, and Walnut Ink, then I covered it all with the Black soot.

Megan, your most recent cards are fabulous! I love that you're using every scrap of Joseph's Coat that you have. The distress inks are working great with this technique.

One of my brothers-in-law called me a few days ago. He wants to surprise my sister with a birthday party. It's a special birthday for her, but if I tell you which one it is, she'll kill me. Anyway, I'm going to be gone for the rest of the day. I may even spend the night with another sister. She's got a computer I can use so I could check in if her cat will let me.

I'll catch up with your posts when I get back. And Monday I'll be putting all of your names in the random generator to see who wins the RAK.

Keep 'em coming!
