1. Who are you? Please include self portrait and any links to other sites featuring you, like your blog, website, etc. Pimp yourself out!!

I am Tracie Renee Gibbs. I'm married to Wes and Mom to Jossalyn (20), Elijah (10), and Emma (8).

I have lived in the Pacific Northwest my whole life and LOVE it here! Some of my favorite things (besides photography) are cooking, being at the beach, baseball, Starbucks, and pretty much anything made with pumpkin!

I'm a stay at home mom and I home school my kiddos. I also have one very spoiled cat!

2. What inspired you to get into photography? And when?

I have loved photography since I was kid. I got my first camera when I was about 12... a Kodak 110 Pocket Camera. I was on Cloud 9! Then in High School I got my first 35mm camera and began dreaming of being a professional photographer.

I wasn't able to pursue it though, and that dream got pushed aside as I became a wife and mom, which were my number one priorities. But over the years, I always had a camera in my hand and snapped away whenever I could.

Then one day a couple of years ago, it was like a light came on in my head and said "You can do this, it IS OK!"

So, I ordered 'Understanding Exposure' and 'Learning to See Creatively' by Bryan Peterson, found the 2Peas Photograpy Board, and eventually got my first DSLR.

3. What is your education? Degree? Self-taught? Workshops?

Definately a combination of Two Peas, reading books and online tutorials, and practice, practice, practice! Another great learning experience for me was going on shoots with Heather (lollydohbird). I learned so much from her!

4. What kind of photographer would you describe yourself as?

Natural, in the moment, in love with capturing expressions and emotions.

5. What kind of equipment do you use? Not every piece you own, but your favorites or use most often.

I'm a Nikon girl and love my D80! My favorite lens is my 50

6. What did/do you struggle with the most?

I used to struggle with comparing my work with others. Once I put that aside, it opened up a whole new world to me.

7. What was your biggest "A-ha" moment? Can be something technical/camera-related, something personal as it relates to photography, or something you learned about yourself as a photographer.

Realizing what MY style is, and not trying to be anything else

8. Biggest lesson learned? Can be either about photography, the business, yourself, etc.

Realizing that pursuing something I love doesn't make me selfish as a Mom. It doesn't mean that my kids still don't come first in my life... it is OK and GOOD for me to have something for me, too!

9. What's your greatest triumph or achievement? Could be just opening your own business, to awards, to a compliment.

Becoming consistent in getting good shots! (And knowing why! )

10. What is one of the most important mistakes you made that served as a basis for your progression?

Getting flustered and missing shots. When I first got my DSLR, I put so much pressure on myself to get great shots, and get them everytime. Realizing how much I needed to learn, and that I needed to slow down, taught me a lot!

11. What is it about photography that makes your heart sing and your mind race with possibilities?

Emotion, expressions, and the possibility of capturing it all!

12. Which do you like better - taking the photo or processing it?
Why?

Definately taking the photo... processing is more tedious to me. Although, the more I learn and understand about pp'ing, the more I enjoy it. But taking the photo will always be more fun!

13. What inspires you? Could be anything - other photographers, nature, art, music, people, etc.

I am completely inspired by children's sincere expressions, cute conversations, and their total 'go for it' attitude!

14. What is something about you that we don't know? Could be something serious or silly- your choice.

Well... I am addicted to Chapstick! I NEED it at all times. I own many tubes of it and keep it stashed everywhere in my little world! The mere thought of NOT having it with me makes my lips start to dehydrate ... Seriously!

15. Can you share with us your loved ones? Especially if they have been featured in your work?

Here are the big 3... my kids! Jossalyn, Elijah, & Emma

My girls

All three at the coast...

My sweet Jossalyn

Wes and Emma

My boy

A couple more favorites of Jossalyn and Emma

16. Can you share your top tip/technique with us?

Know your camera; the functions, how it meters... be comfortable with it.

17. Who are you picking next and why?

Janice (justjanice) because when I was a new Pea, she always stood out to me as such a sweet and supportive person. And I would love to know more about this wonderful Pea

18. Please share some of your favorite works with us!!

I have had the opportunity to photograph some super fabulous, cute pea-kids, so I have a lot to share! (Along with a few of my own cute peas)

Emma & Madi (Heather ~lollydohbird's~ beautiful girl)

Danielle's sweet and handsome boys

Emma...

Elijah...

Beautiful little pea ladies...

And darling Nicholas

And, occasionally I shoot non-people shots!

Sunflowers at Farrah's...

And, the Pacific Ocean

If you have stuck with me and read all of this, thank you! I love this photography community of ours

Hi Tracie,

Awsome interview. I'm an extreme newbie. In fact this is my first post. Been reading and learning and still figuring out first DSLR purchase. Your interview really struck a cord with me as I, too, homeschool my six and ten year old and I have also struggled with giving myself 'permission' to get involved with somthing I want to do without feeling the need for constant justification. Your photos are amazing and your children are so beautiful. I doubt I'll ever persue more than a hobby with taking pics but I want the good ones to be more than just happy 'accidents'. I have a NEED to capture moments and want to do it well. You do.

Oh, Tracie, it was so much fun to read about you! And I am privileged that I got to meet you in Denver, and I wish that we could have spent more time just gabbing.

Your kids are so, so lovely! Well, your little guy is handsome, LOL.

And your self-portrait is really, really wonderful....which is no wonder, because it's of you!

So nice to meet you Tracie.

I really enjoyed reading about you and it seems like we have a lot in common, including homeschooling our kids and this:

Realizing that pursuing something I love doesn't make me selfish as a Mom. It doesn't mean that my kids still don't come first in my life... it is OK and GOOD for me to have something for me, too!

I've often struggled with this aspect of photography with it's big learning curve and other time-consuming tasks (i.e. pp'ing).

I also have a chapstick "addiction", LOL!

YOu have a really beautiful family and amazing talent. TFS!

Loved reading getting to know more about you...I knew Starbucks would be mentioned somewhere Loved the picture of Emma skipping down the road with the cornfield on each side and the slide shot! Your kids are beautiful Tracie! Again, thoroughly enjoyed your interview. Keep in touch!

So nice to read more about you Tracie! I feel lucky to have been one of the Peas you got to meet here in Denver! And such cute pictures of my little dudes, too! You are such a sweetheart!!!

Fellow chapstick addict stepping forward. It's funny, in fact,... last night I went to bed and was literally falling asleep when I thought to myself - when did I put chapstick on last? Didn't I just put some on? My lips are starting to feel dry.................. and I couldn't relax till I got up and got some more. Just in case.

Tracie, m'dear.....I didn't think it was possible for me to adore you more than I already did, but after reading your interview I do!!!!!

You are so real and refreshing and such a sweet, kind person. I LOVE your pictures, but your words were especially touching to me today.

Realizing that pursuing something I love doesn't make me selfish as a Mom. It doesn't mean that my kids still don't come first in my life... it is OK and GOOD for me to have something for me, too!
This is sooooooo true, and I wish that there were other people in my life that could understand that too.

Thank you for sharing a part of yourself with us! (((HUGS)))

Great interview and photos Tracie! We are converts - switched from Chapstick to Blistex Just seems to work better for us, but as you, never far from it.

It was great to meet you at the Denver gathering. You are such a sweet person!
