Good Monday morning, my organizing junkies! This week will be a good one - we're going to get all your memorabilia in order and organized so you can actually FIND it when you want to scrap it! It's a great time to do it before we accumulate even MORE stuff with the holidays. Head on over to my blog and let's get going!

Okay, I wish I could say I didn't have this problem but boy do I ever. I have about 12 years of memories (both NSBR and to be scrapped). I think the basket with the zip bags is going to work for me. I also plan to grab 3 boxes of some sort to store the school stuff that is piling up.

Also a big fan of the ziploc bag! I bought a few of those 12x12 boxes that I anticipate putting the ziploc bags in (laying flat)- I think another item that I need to address is how to remember that I have memorabilia--I have been caught more than once finishing a page and then remembering I had a ticket stub.

OH boy! This week is going to be a bear for me - almost worst than the paper week. I haven't read through the post(can't access blogs at school), but I am set up this week to work on this every night so I can actually participate in a week.

After my recent punch purchases, I may have to re-visit punch week.

Since I haven't done a week in a while, I'm going to re-visit Stacy's 'what's your dream room look like" just so I can remember to focus on the 'dream'....

Stacy, thank you for your due diligence to our cause.

I hear you, Vicki. I have remembered the memorabilia post-layout too. Just happened 2 days ago when I remembered that I had u/s photos to accompany the belly picture. The layout is finished..now what? I am not scrapping another layout until this week is finished.

I looked at the 12x12 boxes today as well as the baskets. I'm just not sure I want to invest in a "temporary" solution. Memorabilia that should be scrapped I want to have something disposable. For the bulky stuff..I don't know. This week I need to do some thinking before I shop.

Jo, I'm glad to hear your going to be busy too this week. Makes me feel more sane.

Sorting by year works for me on this. I have document envelopes (they're a hard plastic w/the elastic that loops around to a front closure), for each year, and store them in a couple file boxes. When I used to get more stuff home from school for DS, I had a separate envelope also for each school year.

I used to sort by year also. Then my kids hit school and have too much stuff. I have a very organized friend who sorted by year - so I did too trying to be 'her'. Then i realized that she had 1 - ONE - kid and it was the same for her either way. So now I sort by year - and by kid - for lots of things as I won't recall whose Band program it was with two kids in band.

BUT - I have memorbila coming out my ears (and yes, it's very painful and hard to hear ) I'm bad at collecting stuff on trips, every program, ticket stub, you name it. AND then I forget it when I scrap. I need a better program to do Power Layouts where I pull everything I need into one box before I scrap - BUT -I'm too ADD to do that well. I think this week is going to be about making some decisions to pitch stuff.

I have newspapers to sort through (years of them ) for sports articles with my kids names in them...graded school papers....

oh geez, I think I'd rather grade than do this....

So I just got home and was able to read the blog....(Stacy - love those boxes on that site!)
and found that I had book marked a site a while back on memorabilia:
memorabilia

Besides sorting, my problem this week will be to 'marry' my memorabilia to my 'dream room'. The black, over stuffed CM filemates are NOT in my dream. So, it's decision time.

I have a bunch of memorabilia to sort and finding the right container has me stymied as some of the items are BIG. I did think about using my old CM workmates too...I'm interested to hear what ya'll are gonna do to file yours.

Excuse my 'french' but I thought I was going to fall out of the chair LMAO when Stacy said, "find some floor space" ....I need the whole street.

ahhh I think I am (finally) one up on you all!! My kids are no longer home and I made a decision long ago not to go back in time and try and play catch up. SOOO all those school lovelys are up in a boxes in the attic and they shall remain there until I die or the kids want them (never).

I do save newspaper clippings, programs, ticket stubs, brochures etc. And while most of it is in ziplocks already some of it is just thrown in my 12x12 boxes (during previous weeks when I found it in mysterious places I just pitched it in there. I think I am going to break down my week like this:
1) Sort the stuff into piles that go together.
2) Determine if I have missed the opportunity to scrap it (meaning I already did the page) and evaluate if another page will be done--if no toss
3) See if the 12x12 boxes I have are sufficent. I also bought extra of blue CH paper organizers (they have the little handles on the top)during project week that can be put into service.
4) Come up with a plan to document what I have so that it will be used. This is a hard one-- my first thoughts are to somehow make a note in picasa where I store the photos so I will see it when I go to print out the photos. Maybe putting a designation to the photo numbers????

Hobby- I think memoribilia will always be growing in your scraproom. So having a designated container is probably a good idea. Yes that certain events memoribilia is temporary but once its scrapped you will end up with more to put in its place right???

What are you guys considering Bulky?? for a bigger box?? I mean if it needed a big box it wouldn't fit on a page???? what am I missing here??

Vicki - for me, 'bulky' is the stuff that probably won't fit on a page, but I want to save. It doesn't make sense to me to have one set of memorabilia for scrapbooking only, and another for stuff that won't fit onto a page - so it all goes together.

well...sorta! I pulled out all of my accordian folders and realized that maaayyybbbeee memorabilia is out of control in my house.

However, I pulled DS and youngest DD to file some of their stuff, and while they didn't want to participate at first, they ended up laughing and having a great time reminiscing.

I tried to only pull a few things out to file, but ended up making a bigger mess than usual. I already had two messy tables in the dining/scraproom area and now it's really strewn everywhere.

I also have to have most of it picked up by Thursday night bedtime as we are hosting our last Midnight Breakfast for this year on Friday night. We've only pulled one other one off so this game is our last chance. BTW - Penny I think we play you - and you guys are going to cream us! It's funny how last year we went all the way to the final State Championship, and this year we've won one district game.

Vicki - I like the goals. I haven't had to work too much on the recent weeks of the challenge (and some weeks such as stamps just have to be put off until Christmas break) but I really wanted to jump in and work this one as it's huge for me. Following your suit, my goals are:
1) just sort like crazy to start with
2) decide what containers will house the stuff (I have accordian folders now - and even made cute little tags for the kid's folders tonight - another distraciton in the process )
3) figure out a plan so that I can easily pull stuff for layouts
4) label everything so it's easy - and like Vicki said - document it so I remember to use it. I like the tag idea - but my computer is far, far away from the stuff - lot's of lugging....if I had a computer handy where I cropped, it would help tremendously.

Does anyone else collect too much stuff on vacations? I need to really go through that stuff this week and be brutal.

I am so tired and meant to go to bed early, but in the middle of my mem work tonight, DH got a movie from Redbox - it was super cute and I highly recommend it for a relaxing funny evening- The Maiden Heist with Christopher Walken and Morgan Freeman - but I had to stop in here before bed....

Night girls!

Most of my memorabilia is from trips or from wonderfully special date nights.

I am about 4000 photos behind in my scrapbooking! To help solve getting caught up, I am creating "project boxes" (2 sterilite hinged 5 drawer units). A hbuge trip everseas would fill a drawer. I am trying to place PP, cardstock, embellies, ribbon, tags, journalling cards, appropriate memorabilia all together in the drawer. If I go to a weekend crop, I just have to grab a drawer and go. They are sort of like giant page kits. I label the drawer front with the trip name and the drawer units are stored in the funny shaped closet under the stairs that is accessed from my scraproom.

If the project is smaller like a date night outing or a family function, I place a project in Zellers no name large freezer bags and layer several bags worth in the drawer.

I can't stand bulky items denting my layered paper so I assign a number label to the top of the box (or bag) and place the bulky items in a box that sits on top of the drawer units. I will try to take a pictures tomorrow. Too tired tonight!

This is significantly cutting down the amount of memorabilia I have left to store. I will use Wookiemouse's numbered system for these as it is qwuite similar to what I am doing now. I am also trying to be ruthless in deciding just what i need to keep.

This is a quasi-nauseating topic for me so I vacillate between ignoring it and reading everything I can on it - and consequently DOING nothing about it.

But one thing I know in my do nothing status: there are things I want to keep that I will probably never ever scrap.

So, that is why I bought the plastic totes and the pendaflex - for that stuff.

As far as jogging your brain on adding memo. to LO's - why couldn't a simple sticky note be used like SJ recommends for enlargements in her Photo Freedom book?

On the big trips its easy to remember you have it - I have one of those Generation Envelopes for each trip. I also have a little stash of everyday ephemera which SJ recommended putting into those darling little suitcases.

Until DH can be a playa at home I don't think I am going to tackle sorting. But hopefully tomorrow since it's my work at home day I can do what I have sprawled on the kitchen counter. I may not tackle the piles in the upstairs overflow closet until after Christmas....

And - one final thought - I don't really want to throw any of it away either....There - I said it.

Stacy - I put the blog link for Katie Watson in Dancinfish's Gratitude spinner post....

I really don't have that much memorabilia of my own to deal with, but have heritage to deal with... I inherited papers from my grandparents, both sides, and even the marriage certificate of my great grandparents (12x18 hand painted and mounted on thin chipboard!!!!)Grandpa on one side was a preacher and poet and I have many of his papers. I also have legal papers and genealogy papers. Yes, I do my genealogy, but have only dealt with a small portion of these papers!

Penny- Post it note? That would never work as I don't print photos out before I am ready to scrap usually. I organize my photos in Picasa so I am going to try and go in and make a note in the Caption section on the first photo for each grouping that I have pictures and memoribilia for. I should see that and it would me easier than adding an M to the "picture number" as an extension. On the rare case that I do print out photos or someone gives them to me I have been pretty good about including them in the memoribilia bags that I have.

I guess I don't own any bulky memoribilia so I am ahead on that one!

And yes Jo- I do collect too much on vacation-- hubby even brings me napkins and papers and stuff while we travel. I hate to throw any of it away until after I do a project-- you never know when you might want to include it. I know for my Scotland Album we were inside alot of dark castles and the pictures just weren't that great and I was able to include brochure pictures and also the written part to document the history portion of the trip. But I am trying to go through the stuff to see if there is anything that years later I know I just won't use.

Punch-- I think you have a whole other challenge going on!! hahaha that's very cool all the family documents. My mom keeps threatening me that its coming my way... I start doing the lalala I can't hear you thing with her!

Vicky then you DID fail LOM of you still don't print pictures!

Okay - I am going to start sorting today. I am pulling together my piles that are downstairs.

First issue: greeting cards? I save the birthday cards and everyday cards that are meaningful to me. Iris cases? What do I do with them??

And here's another question: is the Xyron 500 a tool or an adhesive? What do you think? My punches are taking over - I am reworking a nook.....ugh!

1st-- Penny stop making fun of me... <---said in my winey voice...

2ond- Xyron is a tool (that happens to have adhesive) unless ofcourse you use it for every layout then it becomes an adhesive that happens to be a tool...

3rd- I am a sap for a good card too---especially the ones from my kids! Mine are kept in a box. I was moaning about boxing them up months ago and my sister in law said she didn't have room to store things like that and that she pitches them... made me sad... btw her house is 2x the size of mine...

I am making progress. Dining room table ALL CLEAR. (say that in the voice you would hear on ER- it's more exciting!) Half of kitchen counter ALL CLEAR. Birthday cards in Iris cases. Decision deferred. Gals talk about cute albums. OMG - I have enough unfinished projects to take me to Star Trek years - so Iris Case sounds great to me.

Back to the kitchen counter. I got my MEMO MOJO going and gotta' keep it stoked. A Sonic Route 44 Iced Tea is my drug of choice.

Well I tackled a lot of my memorabilia during my pregnancy "nesting" phase. I do have a few more things to organize but the majority is done. I have 3 files boxes full and organized into school grades/college/sports/ect. The rest and more current memorabilia will go into my handy dandy binder system.

With that said, I did inherit ALL my grandma's scrapbooks that need to be gone through and condensed and organized but I. AM. NOT. GOING. THERE!!! That is going to wait until post-babies when I'm retired and it's either that or cleaning the pantry/washing windows/ect.

DH is on a 10 day business trip and when he gets back I'm going to a 2 day (but sleep at home) crop at my LSS (next weekend). So I'm going to work on packing for that instead of playing in my memorabilia. I must say that it is SO much easier to get things organized to crop when I actually know where everything is including my photos!!! That does NOT included my brass templates as I have still not found them??

~here brass templates....come to mommy....~~~

LOL Kelly on granny's memorabilia and your missing brass templates. I did get all my templates organized last week and I got my dining room table and kitchen table cleared. I think if I listen hard enough I can hear paper whooshing around over at Jo's house.

For memorabilia, I set up a pendaflex file folder for each boy for each school year and then I set up some other chronogical periods. They are all in one plastic file box from Target. 2nd Target file box contains generations envelopes that hold unscrapped trip stuff and unscrapped wedding stuff and an envelope holding all the Xmas cards I've sent out every year.

Then I have 2 American Crafts 12x12 binders: one is sorted to follow my Library of Memories Places We Go and the 2nd one is my LOM Things We Do. I am just throwing stuff in there in broad categories.

Then I have my Iris case of birthday cards.

That sorts out all the stuff that had been piling up downstairs. I have ENVELOPES AND ENVELOPES full of it upstairs. But, main thing is I have my system set up now to drop current things into and I will go back in time probably after the holidays.

DH is so excited to see the kitchen counter again.

Next week: negatives.

Maybe if I can get some time this weekend I can photograph the last few categories we've tackled. I am still deliberating over what paper to cover my pen holders in....decisions, decisions....

Kelly I am jealous of your in store retreat! I want a retreat! I didn't get my October one as usual and I am feeling so deprived....

Wow Penny it really sounds like you have come a long way!! I have successfully "repackaged" my memoribilia into Gigantic ziplock bags and made a list so that I can document what I have in Picasa--So that I will no longer make a lyout and not use the memoribilia. I am happy to report that I did trash a few items that I realized I just would never use.

Tonight hopefully I will do the "computer" side of this challenge.

ohhh and my chandelier light finally came in and my DH got electrcity to my ceiling and hung it... ahhhhh (hear the angels singing???) it makes me sooo happy!!!

You ladies are chugging right along and I have yet to even get to my cave.

I think I'm going to combine all of you into one system. Thanks.

I will get 3 flex-files labeled and ready to go so I can stay caught up (ha) with the kids stuff. Then for my trips I'm sorting into zip-bags (will go acid free one day). I think a 12x12 box will do just fine for any bulky stuff from trips/events. So my plan is set.

Whoosh Whoosh fizzle....fizzle .. (just for you Penny )

I started off like gang busters! and now...um..it's all been stashed away again for the Great Midnight Breakfast! HOWEVER, I refuse to be 'licked' by yet another challenge and listen to all of you crow about your accomplishments yet another week while I chat, encourage, question, but do nothing.

I"m STILL stuck on how to keep all the stuff as I counted and have..well...uh....7 accordion folders (two are jam packed) and still two big boxes full of stuff and and other bags of travel stuff and yes, (waving over here..) I too collect cards.

Kelly I love the two day sleep-at-home retreat.

Penny, once again I looking jealous of your progress.

Vicki - send pictures of the chandelier. and it looks like someone besides me has parties with ziploc bags.

Kelly - I hear ya' on the old pictures. Someday in our age, we'll get to those and not remember the people and then we won't care.

Hobby - you sound like me for the last few weeks.

ohh Jo-- sounds to me like you need to start working on using up that memoribilia!! Did you add these items to your project lists? (or popcycle sticks I forget which one you did?)

I got my memorabilia tagged with my photos last night. Really was kinda quick as I just tagged the first photo in each group.

And I set up a little bin to drop little peices of memoribilia in. (ticket stubs, coasters, brochures) As this is also an issue with me... I pull it out of my purse and it lands whereever in my house!!!

I thought I was done with this organizing thing, untill I saw this week's challenge, I have so ignored this area. I too have zip lock bags labeled with dates and events, neatly filed in CH's, 2 problems CH's are now bulging and the area I store Memorabillia CH's is full.
I REALLY dread pulling all them out and purging and refiling them buttttt I realllllly need to do it.
We returned 2 weeks ago from a week at DW for Food and Wine festival and Halloween and my Enve's and trip journal and laying on the side tablwe of my scrap table unfiled because the Ch's are full. So Monday I will pull dig and purge them,

One question/ How did she know I had soooo many pamplets for one event and all the sugar packets??? She did miss the napkins though, I must have them stashed pretty well, she didn't seem to catch me on those!!!!

Oh well, next week I will dig and purge once more~~

Morning! Yea Hobbyholic for taking the best {ideas} and pitching the rest! And yes, Scrapnpea - she caught you. Mickey must have told on you. Speaking of Mickey, where is mickeygirl??

I made great progress mid-week and I have still have 2 binders, 1 iris case and 2 pendaflex file boxes sitting neatly on my kitchen counter.

Question: where do you PUT this stuff so you can access it to keep your stuff filed but not have it out amongst our nice pretty space?? I can work with the binders but it's the file totes that I don't want to see everyday....

Today I need to finish my Pen holders {cover with paper} and need to put my December Daily stuff into a project envelope and I need to clear a little corner of my desk that is holding some photos and some scraps....

And, then, if I'm a very good girl, I might go buy one more MS punch before they go on sale Sunday to 30 off....

Hope ya'll are having a great week - it has been drop dead gorgeous here!!

I've been lurking! things have been too busy to tackle this right now! had to make 60 baby shower invites (didn't know I'd have to make that many until the last minute) working on a few things for church... and chasing a toddler!

I have a LARGE tote that has all my "stuff" from school and college. it's kinda organized, but needs to be gone through AGAIN. I'm not huge on collecting things from trips-we went to Hershey PA in September and I brought home a few things-the album is almost done so then I can toss the rest. I have a few baby things from DD that need gone through and organzied. currently it's all in a box. I'm currently using a cute photo box as my Stacy Julian little suitcase for everyday items-I bought a new coat and the tag said something cute so in it went

So someday I'll pull it all out and come up with something. I just got DH pool table cleaned off so I don't want to fill it back up before he has a chance to play! Glad you've all gotten so much done this week!

Kelly I am jealous of your in store retreat! I want a retreat! I didn't get my October one as usual and I am feeling so deprived....

Hey Penny, you can retreat to my place! I do have lots of toys and supplies so you wouldn't even have to bring much! lol

Seriously, I am working on getting us peas together in Georgetown in January - you so need to come!!!

pennyscraps - I put all my memorbelia in a 6 drawer sterilite rolling drawer unit and wheeled that baby into the closet under the basement stairs. That closet is accessed from a door in my scraproom. It is very roughly drywalled but not mudded and sanded. One day, I want it finished but it is not in the plans for the next couple of years.

Little update on my progress lately...

My scraproom is in the dungeon as DH fondly calls it! It is set up to be a "media room" if we ever sold. In other words, it has no windows, it has carpets and is wired for surround sound. I have the ugly white covers with the speaker wires hanging out and tied in a knot in each corner of the room! My beloved cupboards and counter would be pulled out and moved with us, if we ever sold.

That closet under the stairs has come in handy during this challenge.
I have allocated a 10 iris cart drawer stacking unit (2 of the 5 iris cart drawer units from costco) for projects. Each iris cart holds the cardstock and PP and embellies (if they are flat embellies), ribbon etc to finish a book. So one drawer might be our trip thru Salt Lake City, and home to vancouver thru Death Valley, another might be the same for a heritage book for my Mom for Xmas, another might be grad stuff for my daughter who got her Masters last year. etc

The 6 drawer sterilite rollong unit sits beside the "project tower". It has 2 narrow drawers at the top. They hold hardware for my room, like extra wheels, book spacers and book extender posts, labels, extra files, etc 2nd drawer is . The remaining 4 large drawers have memorbelia on the bottom and I have 3 drawers still available to be filled.

The back end of the closet has a bookcase. It stores all my cookbooks and gardening books. I need to figure out a way to add a light at the back as it is darker at that end. Keeping my eye out for a small clip on light with a long cord. Wouldn't you know I gave one to the thrift shop last year.

Love the idea of using the drawers to store projects/memorabilia wish I had space for something that elaborate!

Way back during project week I added alot of memoribilia to my little popcycle sticks so I have been busy working on catching up on some of the quick one pagers thus reducing my memoribilia-- {smile}

Next week kinda scares me.. I don't have any negatives in my room but boy do I have a ton in my basement...

SEE!!! This is EXACTLY why I don't want to give up anything! ha, ha! Try the garage section of a home improvement store. I think you want that thing they can hang from the hood of a car.

Lots of lacrosse today - no paper moving or playing. I did listen to my AE class video and now I need to get moving on that. I also have a title to cut on my Cricut - for 6 days now - and why can't I do THAT instead of THIS so that I can file that page??

Aren't we quirky?

scrappymo- Does Costco have the best prices on those Iris carts? I bought one a few years back at J's and would love another. Unfortunately, I have 3 more of the plastic bins but not a cart - so getting another cart STILL doesn't put those in a rack of anything.

I, too, am liking the idea of the drawers. I'm hoping to work a bit on finishing some memorbilia in one box tomorrow. Played too much today after sleeping in from midnight breakfast. Tomorrow I take my girls to see David Cook in Dallas, and have three flats of winter flowers to plant. hmm...when is that pesky memorabilia gonna get itself filed?

jomamastamps - Costco was the best price but they don't have them here anymore.
I bought 2 sets at costco (40 bucks canadian each) and managed to get a third at their clearance store...MTF. I got it really cheap cuz 3 of the 5 of the drawers were cracked. Like you I had iris boxes and really just wanted the cart to store them. The fourth one is from target or somewhere. It has 3 normal iris box drawers and 2 little narrow ones. This works out great for me cuz that one and a reg one are in the project cupbaord. The narrow ones are where I put a small project...like my grandkids latest photog session and matching papers.

I don't drive and have some health issues that prevent me from getting out on my own now. Dh and my good friends take me shopping. DH used to travel 3/4 of the year so I soon got in the habit of buying up whatever I needed for a project soon as I saw it (especially if on sale). I cann't be in the middle of something and just get up and run out for a missing supply!

I have known for a few years that I would most likely have to leave work early due to health issues. hitting the deer last year just speeded up my departure date. I decided to buy the items I needed to finish projects while I was still working and more flush with $. Luckily I use a lot of cardstock and I like timeless embellies like primas, tags, brads etc.
Sometimes I update my projects by adding pieces of new "hip" PP.
I do a lot of vacation books and heritage books though, so they don't have to rely on the latest pp styles!
Well, I really have gone on and on, but just trying to explain why i have so much room dedicated to projects! Course if I was able to just get them scrapped, they wouldn't be projects, would they. Teehee

Jo, I think J's has that iris cart thing and you can use a coupon on it. They have the regular one and over by sewing they have one with narrow drawers on top. But, girl - surely you have enough plastic for this millennium! I thought you were going green?!

Hey everyone - I was cleaning out my message board bookmarks and saw this September memorabilia thread.

Hello to all you organized ladies.

I have been thinking of doing Wookiemouse's challenge since day one.

I am going to start this tomorrow (the story of my life..tomorrow lol)

I am going to start with the ones I think will be easiest for me then on to the more lengthy ones.

Wish me luck.

Tracy

oh have any of you taken before pics of your rooms?

Tracy- I always say better late than never (of course I am always running late!) I caution you! you will hate your scraproom before you love it again!! but this journey has been well worth it! I think if you click on those of us who chat here daily you will find some pretty scary before pictures and then pictures of stuff before and after we have sorted, thrashed and reorganized each week!

Yea Tracy. The totally neat thing is that you can go to Wookiemouse's blog and on the bottoms of either her first or second post {back in May} you will see the weeks and now you can pick and choose your order!

It is definitely a case where the tortoise beats the hare. Do your space audit as she suggests and follow week 1/2 and then you can launch into whatever abyss you want. ha, ha!

I definitely feel like my space is mine, now - and it's so wonderful to know where everything is and to have invested the time to getting it that way which motivates me to use it and put it away, to finish something and clear my space.

Good luck and there's all those threads, too, to go back and read! Have fun and we're on moving on to NEGATIVES next.

Welcome Tracy! You will certainly love this challenge! Actually you'll probably curse Stacy (Wookiemouse) for her brilliance turned torture, then yourself (for the mess you let your scraproom become), then your DH/SO (just becuz!!) then accept the mess and the challenge and get going on organizing! At some point, its just like Christmas because you find things you didn't remember you had. Other times it's not quite as rosy when you are still looking for those dumb brass templates that you'd like to organize in your fabulous binder system but they are still MIA!

~ Come HERE you freakin' templates!!! ~

With all that said, I LOVE my scraproom and how easy it is to find things (brass templates excluded) now that everything is organized! Love it!!
