1. Who are you? Please include self portrait and links to other sites featuring you, like your blog, website, etc. Pimp yourself out!!
Hmmm. Where to begin! I am Janice Stewart. I am a Christian wife and SAHM. I have been happily married to my wonderful husband, David for 22 years. That's more than half my life! We have three kids---Tyler who will be 19 in December, Hadley who is 15, and Lance who is 13. Yep. THREE TEENAGERS! Yikes!
My husband and I decided I would stay home when we had children. Little did we know, I would get pregnant almost immediately after college graduation! So, we took the leap of faith and I quit my job. I always figured I would go back to work once they were in school all day, but life threw us a curve we were not expecting. Our youngest was born with cystic fibrosis. It quickly became evident that my place was at home regardless of their ages. His care is time consuming and he can get very sick, very quickly. I love that I don't have the added stress of having to be at a job every day and feel extremely blessed that my husband can provide for us.
I enjoy being a volunteer. Love being involved with the kids' school, sports and church activities! Of course, they like it less now than when they were younger. Mom can find out everything!
I'm struggling with what else to say, so I'll just give you a few random facts. I think it will give you a glimpse of me!
I am a protector. If I can keep my kids safe and happy, I consider it a HUGE success.
I have naturally curly hair. Very curly. Think corkscrew. My mom, dad, brother and sister do, too. My kids do not have curly hair.
I am indecisive, but have an opinion on nearly every decision made by someone else. This drives my husband crazy!
While I truly love my kids just as they are now, I secretly long for the days when they were small. **Hug your little ones!!! Time goes so quickly!**
I'm a girl of comfort. Unless I have to be somewhere, you will find me at home in my pajama pants!
I'm a procrastinator---sometimes I'll even procrastinate things I like. Ugh. I hate that about me!
I *love* being a fan at my kids' sporting events. It makes me proud!
I read owner's manuals.
I enjoy scrapbooking and have recently switched to digital-almost exclusively!
I love to read-alternating fiction with a book that will help me be a better person. I also like to have a Bible study going at all times.
AND, I really hate pictures of me... That's been part of the hold-up! I can't seem to get a decent self-portrait I like. So, I'm posting without it and will try again tomorrow.
2. What inspired you to get into photography? And when?
I've always loved photography! From the time I was old enough to have a camera, I've been the family photographer. Of course, getting my first DSLR helped me step things up a bit!
3. What is your education? Degree? Self taught? Workshops?
Well, I have my master's degree in Education---instructional technology. As far as photography goes, I took a class in high school where we used film 35mm and developed our own stuff. Ive also taken a community college class or two. Most of what I've learned, though, has been through trial and error and from the very knowledgeable Peas!
4. What kind of photographer would you describe yourself as?
Hmmm. That's a hard one! I love faces. I also love to capture moments as they are happening, without them even knowing I'm there. So, if I have to fess up to a style, I guess it would be more photojournalistic?
5. What kind of equipment do you use? Not every piece you own, but your favorites or use most often.
I'm a Canon girl but occasionally, I toy with the idea of Nikon. Shh. Don't tell! But, I have too much invested in Canon, so I'm probably Canon for good. Most of the time, I use my Canon 40D and my 24-70. It's just a great, practical combo that serves me well in a variety of situations.
6. What did/do you struggle with the most?
I struggle with the confidence to just whip out my big 'ol camera and start shooting! Sometimes, I'll be out and see a shot I'd love to take, only to be to self-conscious to take it. I'm working on that!
7. What was your biggest a-ha moment? Can be something technical/camera-related, something personal as it relates to photography, or something you learned about yourself as a photographer.
I would say that my biggest a-ha moment came when I learned how to shoot in manual. It brought all the elements together for me---gave me a deeper understanding of how each thing effects a shot, so that I could use it to create a photo, not just shoot one.
8. Biggest lesson learned? Can be either about photography, the business, yourself, etc.
My biggest lesson learned is that a photo doesn't have to be perfect to be worthy. When I first got my DSLR, I obsessed with trying to make every shot technically perfect. Of course, I missed the mark. A lot! Still do! And that was very discouraging to me. Now I can see the beauty in many of those imperfect shots, too.
9. What's your greatest triumph or achievement? Could just be opening your own business, awards, compliments.
I take great pride when someone compliments a shot of mine without knowing it was mine. Something about it being so genuine!
10. What is one of the most important mistakes you made that served as a basis for your progression?
Underexposure! Once I realized that tendency, and realized that the in-camera meter was not perfect, my exposure has improved dramatically!
11. What is it about photography that makes your heart sing and mind race with possibilities?
Capturing the moment!! That's what it's about for me. There's just something so special about freezing a moment and being able to revisit it whenever you like!
12. Which do you like better-taking the photo or processing it? Why?
Definitely taking the photo! I don't mind processing one or two, but to edit hundreds is just such a dreaded chore to me.
13. What inspires you? Could be anything-other photographers, nature, art, music, people, etc.
Beauty! I see it everywhere. I am in awe of the beautiful world we live in---I love the colors, textures, faces.
14. What is something about you that we don't know? Could be something serious or silly-your choice.
I'm a pony-tail girl! Wish I was girly and glamorous, but most days I end up with a pony tail.
15. Can you share with us your loved ones? Especially if they have been featured in your work?
Sure! Although, my family rarely cooperates for an actual portrait.
The most recent family shot...
My wonderful, amazing husband
My oldest son, Tyler
My sweet daughter, Hadley
My baby boy, Lance
Our dog, Max
The way family shoots go...
16. Can you share your top tip/technique with us?
Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Then shoot some more! It's a great way to learn!
17. Who are you picking next and why?
I'm picking Carolyn, aka Hampton32. I adore her work and love hearing about her exciting life! I want to know more.
18. Please share some of your favorite works with us!!
Well, when I was looking through for my faves, it became apparent that I LOVE face shots. Love them! So, that's what most of my favorites are.

WOW, Janice!!!! What a fabulous interview!!!
Your warm spirit always comes across in all of our interactions via 2Peas, FB, and the blog -- but I have to say it ALSO shines through your breathtaking work!
Your focus is so sharp (and I am a sharp focus freak!), but you also get a lot of emotion to come out of your subjects. It says a lot about who you are and how comfortable you make people feel. Your shots are truly gorgeous!
And I agree with so much of what you wrote -- especially about hugging your kids when they're small!
I am honored you picked me to go next. {{gulp!!}} (Yikes! Gotta do a self-portrait!)
Thanks so much for sharing! |

Oh, Janice! I don't know what to say because right now I'm sitting like this: I think I just fell in love with you!
This was SUCH a pleasure to read! A lot of what you said resonated with me. this:
While I truly love my kids just as they are now, I secretly long for the days when they were small. **Hug your little ones!!! Time goes so quickly!**
And this: I am indecisive,
And this: Beauty! I see it everywhere. I am in awe of the beautiful world we live in
I laughed out loud about you being at home in your pajama pants! I could live in my Victoria Secret red plaid flannel pajamas!
I loved this:
My biggest lesson learned is that a photo doesn't have to be perfect to be worthy.
I'm going to try really hard to remember that. Thank you for saying it.
Your work is beautiful...love all the faces! The little boy with the big green eyes...omgosh! I gasped...really. You are beautiful and so is your family.
Thank you so much for sharing yourself with us, Janice! It was wonderful getting to know you better! |

Thank you for this fun read! I adore your solo shots of each of your kids... What depth and character in each of them... Wow!
This has been really fulfilling to "get in you head" with each of these weekly interviews with various Peas... Thanks, Janice! |

Janice, how fun to get to know the person behind the camera! I feel like we just sat down and had a nice chat. I agree--hug 'em when they're small...mine are grown and gone . Love all the faces and emotion you've captured!
I agree completely with everything Pat said!!! And, you are a special Mom, that is sure evident!!
And, like so many others have said, I am a HUGE Gigantic Procrastinator too, oh my, you wouldn't believe how bad.
Great interview, and by the way, you are a beautiful woman!!! So, don't be afraid to take those self-portraits!! |

Thanks again, Peas! You are wonderful!
Doing the interview was fun---once I got over the nervousness. Yikes!

Wow....your interview was so touching and you're such a beautiful person inside and out that i don't know why you struggle so with a self-portrait (although I do too). Amazing shots!! |
