Last night I posted a link on my FB account to Ali Edwards project December Daily on Ali's Blog.

I am thinking of doing this project and wanted to share it with my friends.

Ali used a Donna Downey product, so in my post I mentioned that I do not support DD in ANY WAY and was sad that Ali had used the item.

I was asked why I don't use DD products, so just finished sharing with all 491 friends why I boycott DD. Don't forget that if they comment to that post then ALL their friends see the explanation too!!! So the number of people grows exponentially.

I saw another ad for DD products here on 2ps yesterday, so I was happy to share why i don't use her stuff!!!

A continued lesson in why Customer Service is so important in this day and age.

She was a jerk to a Pea. She did eventually make things right, but only after all of Pea-dom came down HARD on her. In my opinion, too little and too late, and for the wrong reason - and I will never buy her product because of how she treated this person.

And I know the rule is to link, but apparently it was so bad, that it doesn't even come up in a search for me. I hope someone has the whole debacle bookmarked and can link us.

Donna Downey is a famous designer. A Pea was enrolled in her very expensive workshop. That pea contracted cancer and had to have difficult, invasive surgery at the same time as the workshop. Donna Downey refused to allow the pea to have a refund, to exchange her spot for one in a future class, or to give/sell the spot to someone else. Peas came down REALLY hard on her....she finally relented and agreed to refund her, but only to save face. She demonstrated her true colors in the initial refusal and in the excessive amount of time and persuading it took her to finally do the right thing.

ETA: 2 Peas came out smelling like a rose though. Mely sent pe@ce a big box of get-well goodies. Honestly, DD behaved terribly, but the way the twopeas community responded to protect one of our own, and the way the twopeas company responded with generosity was really cool.

It was a very ugly ordeal and I felt bad for all involved. I wonder though, DD came back and apologized, right? Admitted she was wrong? We had a pea that blew her stack the other day and came back and apologized. Everyone was so kind and forgiving (as I think we all should have been). Why not offer the same forgivness to DD? I don't get the double standard. We all say and do things that we regret, don't we? We might have had a thought in our head the justified the original behavior but after thinking it over realize we were wrong and made a mistake. We're human.

ETA: (I added this post a little ways down, but thought I would add it in my OP too) I am not a DD supporter or non-supporter regarding her scrapbooking supplies or classes. I only scrapbook digitally and haven't even done that in months. I came into that other thread at the end when it was all over and it just felt like SUCH a dramatic disaster. I don't know if her apology was sincere or not, I guess I'm just assuming that it was. I try to see the good in people and that part of me just wants to think that it really was sincere and she realized that although her no refund policy is one she already had in place there are exceptions to every rule and it's not always appropriate to say "that's the policy and we stand by that." I hope she learned from the situation, but I have no idea if she did or didn't.

No. This is not even close to comparable. With Donna Downey, it was too little too late and the final result was not genuine. The final outcome was only there to save face and to save the profits she would lose from a boycott.

It's completely different than the flip that just happened. There was a genuine apology from Jade. No compassion for businesswomen who have no common business sense like Donna Downey. You say you feel bad for everyone involved, it bothers me if everyone includes Donna Downey and her idiot assistant. They don't deserve compassion or even a second thought. All they deserve is the boycott. Good on the OP for spreading the word.

The difference between the pea and hairflipped then came back and apologized and DD is that the pea was truly sorry and wanted to make things right. She hair flipped in a moment or anger, anguish and pain.

DD only came around because of pressure from us not because she felt remorse or wanted to do the right thing. She could see her finances were going to be impacted in a major way so relented and gave in.

Very different scenarios.

If her apology had come much quicker then perhaps that would have happened. If we get mad, explode, then calm down and apologise it's usually all in a pretty short space of time - DD's apology took forever ad only came after incredible pressure.

And lets not forget that in the midst of all of this the crazy pea detectives found out that she had already let another pea sell her seat to someone else for the same event with a random "I just can't go" or whatever reason. Then when someone needed emergency surgery that week all she could get was a "Too bad, it's policy".

Even after the story "broke" on twopeas DD refused to allow her to sell her seat, but DD and crew were going to re-sell her (sick pea's) seat, essentially double dipping.

Edit to change wording because I totally agree with this but didn't know if anyone else wanted to know.

For anyone that missed Kathy's update for Sharon, her surgery was successful!! Link to the 10/28 update.

Sharon was able to show more grace for DD than I am. I have chosen to not support DD's business because I think poorly of her practices and her (and her staff's) personal conduct. Had she been kinder, quicker and more genuine in her response to the situation- I would be much more forgiving in mine.

It would have been accepted, had DD been REAL about her apology. It came too little and WAY too late. She was called out for her business ethic of allowing another pea (which the thread was linked for her) to sell her seat for no medical reason at all. DD made pe@ce feel like the entire episode was her fault, and that she was a bad person for airing this debacle on the peas. DD was horrid. Her assistant was horrid. When the assistant came back and started up again, all DD said was "well bring on round 2" making a joke about everything.

I wonder though, DD came back and apologized, right? Admitted she was wrong? We had a pea that blew her stack the other day and came back and apologized. If you want to bring up hair-flips, bring up a hair-flip that is relevant to your DD analogy. Jade came back to apologize, not because she was told to make it right, but because she realized that she was having an off day, and took it out here. Jade's was a heart felt apology. She is undergoing a terrifically hard time right now.

Those two incidents that you wish to tag together, are not even close!!!

Heidi Swapp incident? Not sure about that one. I think it has something to do with moving her production lines out of the US, or her husband moving production lines for his company out of the US to save/make money.

Stacey Jullian(sp) was also tagged in the thread, because the 'artist' should not try to wear the business woman's hat. And then claim 'woe is me, I can't do both'

DD essentially did the same thing.

If you are a celebrity, and you are making money off the little guy, you will be held to a higher standard than the average person. DD wants us to look up to her as a scrapping celebrity. She wants all the bells and whistles. BUT is unwilling to see the person who is paying for her products. She sees the bottom dollar, and that is what motivated her. Once her sponsors started getting hit with peas saying they will not purchase their products because of DD, then DD came and apologized. Then she decided to try and make it right.

Too little, WAY too late.

I'm not comparing hair-flips, I'm comparing the fact that one person made a mistake and apologized. Another made a mistake and apologized. IMO, that is the same thing, even though the subject matter is not identical.

I felt very bad for Jade when she posted the things she did. She didn't need to apologize to me. She IS having a tough time and she had a rough moment where it all came tumbling out. I do not think ill of her AT ALL for anything that happened.

I just used the DD debacel as an example in my online class of impression management for a company gone wrong. Heh. My class was appalled by the behavior, too.

I missed Jade's apology. Was it on the original thread or a new one?

I just don't know about trying to put someone out of business. Messing with their livelihood, so to speak.

Boycott her personally, if you wish, but making it so public that she is forced out of business Not sure I can be on board with that.

I get what you are saying. You believe that they both flipped, and both apologized, therefore both should be forgiven.

What I am saying, and probably badly worded is:

- DD was FORCED to apologize because the peas bombarded her with the right thing to do.

- Jade came back to apologize because she knew she had hurt some people.

There (for me) lies the difference. One apology was sincere, the other was not. That is why I can not forgive DD, but can Jade.

I do hear you when you say that you feel for Jade. We all do, maybe that is why we are willing to accept her apology at face value.

I understand that you are not comparing the hair-flips, but comparing the peas response to them. I hope that I have explained why, I feel, there is a difference in the response. Not because there is a double standard, but because one apology is sincere, and the other was lip service.

I totally do see your point as well. In my heart, I just want to think that it was a change of heart that made DD apologize. Maybe I'm being gullible.

I don't think you are being gullible MissAng. I think you have a good heart and try to see the best in everyone.

I would like to see the best in this situation as well. But for me it was too little on DD's part. It took too many people telling her she needed to make this right. It took too many people contacting her sponsors before she corrected the issue. Then she joked about the whole thing when her assistant threw more fuel on the dieing fire.

I just don't know about trying to put someone out of business. Messing with their livelihood, so to speak.

Boycott her personally, if you wish, but making it so public that she is forced out of business Not sure I can be on board with that.

I will not advocate for others to boycott her products. That is their choice. My choice is not to use or purchase her stuff.

If someone asks why, I will tell them. Other than that, it is an individual's choice to what they wish to do with the information.

Another DD boycotter here.

Many of us emailed DD to advise her there was a problem that needed her attention. We all got quite a generic identical snippy email back that hinted the problem was solved.
A second email to her resulted in an even snippier email response back.

We work hard for our money. I chose where I spend it. DD is not on my list!

And lets not forget that in the midst of all of this the crazy pea detectives found out that she had already let another pea sell her seat to someone else for the same event with a random "I just can't go" or whatever reason.

Wasn't this other person given the opportunity to sell her spot because it was done prior to some sort of cut off date? Peace knew the cut off date and missed it.

I wasn't going to comment but I changed my mind. I think DD got a raw deal. I know that's not going to be a popular sentiment but that's how I feel. DD is running a business and can't make exceptions for every Joe Blow. How did she know this person wasn't making up a story just to get her money back?

Peace new exactly what she was doing by coming to 2peas to post about her situation. She knew the mob mentality would kick in and it would turn ugly. I really think had she communicated directly with DD or her husband and got the entire story out, it would have been resolved. Maybe not in just one email or phone call but through some actually heart to heart communication. I just don't think she gave DD a chance.

Again just my opinion...flame away.

Was DD really forced out of business?

I am surprised to see this thread resurrected.

I do want to say something about this

I really think had she communicated directly with DD or her husband and got the entire story out, it would have been resolved.

I tried. I couldn't get past Kandi. I got the brush off. I easily could've provided medical proof. I wasn't given the chance. But I do want to say that Kandi did apologize in an email and I did find it very sincere. DD only called once the pea cavalry charged. And she at first said something very similar to what you posted.

ETA: oh, and

yeah, I missed the date. That wasn't in question. I wasn't diagnosed with cancer before the cut-off date. I was hoping for an exception to the rule for extenuating circumstances.

@ mzza111: if that's how DD wants to run her business then so be it.

Plenty of character flaws came into light though...and who wants to do business with someone like that? The driving force of this hobby is full of wonderful, positive things.

DD became who she was BECAUSE of her fellow scrappers...so it only seemed appropriate that such fellow scrappers put their money where their mouth was.

In the end, if DD wanted to live by the sword, then she definitely "died" by the sword too. Sucky if she eventually lost her business...I doubt she's the first or last business person to lose theirr investment based on bad decisions. Sucks to be sucky.

First of all, I believe you're entitled to your own opinion and I won't try to talk you out of it. Sharon is one of my closest friends and I also signed up for the event when she did and actually went to it without her. I just want to clear up a few things.

1. There was no cut off date. (ETA: Never mind, I'm wrong on this)

2. Sharon did talk to Kandi before she ever brought it to the board.

3. They would not even let her GIVE her seat away.

Now my opinion, and remember, it's only that, my opinion.
Donna was not sincere and the only reason she finally refunded the money was because she got too many e-mails from angry peas and nasty comments on her blog. She did it to save face. IMO it was no where near an appology.

And DD refunded it through Paypal (even though it was originally paid for with a credit card. Paypal took their cut so Sharon actually didn't get the whole amount refunded.

Needless to say, I will never buy anything with DD's name on it.
