This is the part that scares me a bit. I love making lists! It's the actual work that I find intimidating.

Question of the Week: Who's starting small? Who's going for broke?

After reading Wookiemouse's blog several times, I've decided to start small. I am actually going to clear everything out, just not all at once. I find the thought of that overwhelming and I do still want to be able to scrap during this organizational process.

I'm gonna try and go for broke. I just don't have anywhere to put extra boxes so my iris carts and thieir contents will have to stay put for now.

I moved all my stuff out into the gameroom next door and piled each thing together. All paper over here, stamps over there in that box, inks, tools, etc. Luckily I could leave it there for awhile and work on each set of things one at a time. So it's like the box-it-all-up system without the boxes. If you have a room you can do this with, go for it.

But the guys here asked the other day when they get to play pool or air hockey again.

But I also had nothing put away, no organization at all. I had painted and had basic furniture in there but that was all, except boxes and bags of SB crapola. So it was an organization job in itself just to get it put into categories in the gameroom.

But that has helped me see how much I have of each thing and where I can fit it best in the room. And I'm not tripping over other things when trying to get it all put away.

I still haven't figured out what to do with my two "big" categories, Scouts and Disney. My son is at Life now and working on his Eagle. I need his Cub, Boy, and Eagle Scout books done for his ES Ceremony. I think I have one Cub layout done. So it will be easier for me to put all Scout, travel, outdoors, camping, etc, stuff all together for now so I can get those books done. Same with different Disney books for my younger son.

Any ideas for bigger categories? Maybe just use a big bin for now?

If I was to "go for broke", where would I actually put the stuff?
I'd *love* to do it, but I really can't think of anywhere to put the contents of a whole room whilst I reorganise it ...

It sounds like a good idea to do this "pack it up" but are we not supposed to craft at all during this purging/sorting/organising time?? I am not sure I want to spend the next 6 months sorting but not actually crafting! I *like* crafting!

I had to laugh, Leisa! I, too, love making lists but find the actual work daunting.

I purchased ten 71 qt. Rubbermaid containers so I can go for broke. Well, kinda go for broke. My entire problem lies within all the drawers in my scraproom and the boxes I have shoved into the garage. So, I am going to empty out each drawer and box and separate it into the Rubbermaid containers. There is no other way for me to accomplish this organizational challenge.

Even though it would be nice to put it all in another room, I plan on using the floor space in my scraproom to lay out all the containers. This is because a. my husband hates to see messes so I can just close the door and b. my husband will see much I truly do own so I can just close the door!

I already have been sorting some. I have been taking stuff out of the room and putting it into piles: patterned paper, cardstock, kits, tools, etc. So that way it is already breaking down into categories. I have decided I am like Monica Gellar from Friends though. I have 15 categories for my brads: Primary large brads, Primary small brads, shaped brads, pastel mini brads, fancy guest, everyday....just kidding for all you Friends fans out there Lots of categories to sort into, hope I can have enough room to sort well!

I'm going for broke...I really have to. I've got stuff stacked up all over the place and I can never find what I want. I am also concerned about finding a spot to put things while they are out of my space, but I don't have the amounts of stuff that I've seen other people so I think I can find some space. My paper will be the biggest issue. It's the one thing that I have lots and lots of. Shoe boxes should be big enough for just about everything else.

I went for broke too! I pulled out everything that I didnt like about my room...put it into boxes and put it in the gameroom next door. DH hasnt seen this yet...and hoping I can finish it before he does! LOL Ive purged some really old stuff to the trash and have made a basket for RAK'ing and swapping so that as I find things I dont think I will realistically ever use I can just toss them in there. Once I puuled everything I didnt like organizationally out of the room I went back and tweaked the things that were working so that they were 100% organized!

So far I have organized:

Ribbons & Fibers
Paint
Paper
Embellishments & Rubons
Adhesives

I also tackled the Ideas from magazines (I'll need to revisit this one at a later date to truly organize it but I have went through all my magazines and pulled out the things that I like.)

It feels so good to walk into my studio now... everything is where it should be! It may take me a while but I know that once I get through this it will be sooooo much easier to work!

I still have to get the basement to a point that I can bring everything down.
We had to replace both a furnce, water heater and added the air conditioner this week, so that has consummed my time with the contractor. Now that I do have both Hot water and heat again I can start folding loads of clothes and dream. My DH still has no idea of what I am up to! This will be a jump in a fry pan...hopefuly not.

How did your DH's react to making a scraproom? Approach?

I'll keep you posted.

I think its best for me if I start small. I don't have a lot of time, and I have no space in my tiny apartment to do all this at once. I can really only go through all my stuff when DS is sleeping, and I've been taking naps with him because I'm 30 weeks preggo.
I don't have a lot of stuff though, so it shouldn't be too hard to go through it all.

I have decided to "go for broke," and I am already glad I did.

My boxes

Sorting all these boxes according to the categories of the Weekly Challenges has really helped me realize what I have, and how much of what I was storing that is not my style and I can let go of it.

Already made a trip to Goodwill and threw out 2 large bags of trash. Feels great to pare down to just what I love. Of course, I still have to go through each box as the week comes up. Purge some more and store it better, I hope.

I did my own reorganization last year and I actually know where everything is. I am not about to pack it all up in boxes and start over. I don't have the stomache for that. I will take each category as it comes and work through it that way. I have all the pieces in place. The main thing I need to do is purge. You can see my scraproom after last year's organization if you click on my name it will take you to my gallery. I only have one layout and my scraproom posted so it would be easy. You can see that although it is organized I still have way way way too much stuff.

Cara, I have a several bigger catagories, and keep them in Sterilite 12 x 12 drawers. For Disney, I have one drawer for each trip with completed pages and page kits with photos, and I also have an extra drawer for Disney themes papers and embellishments that I haven't used yet. Any project that big deserves its own space!

Is this nuts? I have a file cabinet in my room that I'm considering getting rid of (just putting it in another room and repurposing it.) It means that I won't be able to store anything craft related in it or on it. But it will clear out some floor space in an already crowded room.

Have any of you gotten rid of a valuable storage piece so you could see more of the floor and wall? The room will definately be more attractive without it, assuming I can find a home for all my junk. But that's iffy. If I get rid of it, does that mean I have to get rid of more stuff? Ugh... that's not appealling.

I'm going for broke, but starting small. I've been SLOWLY clearing out my room and sorting and purging as I go. I hope to get the rest of the furniture out of here this weekend so I can tear the carpet out. I have original 140 yr old wood flooring in here and we put carpet down when we used this as a nursery. I hate having chair mats so going back to hardwood will lessen the visual clutter on the floor.

Like Nicole before: I'm going for broke but I'm starting small...
I have a few things to do before I can start to pack my stuff in boxes, like a birthdaycard for my mom and altering a box also for my mom.
After that I have to make room in the guestroom, before I can put up those boxes to sort stuff out LOL
I am sure I can't make it completely blank canvas this week, but I'm willing to do some areas at least.

I'm also considering to move a cabinet with shallow shelfs to another part of the house, to make room for a EXPEDIT (like) unit. I really think that will help me store my stuff better and make it more accessable... Also I think I can make better use of the rest of the furniture when I rearrange it somehow.

Still not completely done with step 2, the brainstorming. I dream about nice rooms!!!!

UK Heli-
I am actually planning on rummaging through my boxes and doing a layout every week.
I told DH that it was a requirement.... that way you'll get at least 20 layouts done! It is what actually sold him on the challenge. Shhh. Don't tell him your not doing it too...
Afterall, paper is first! This way I will know if my organization is working or not. If its not, I wont be too overwhelmed and can tweek it before the next box or seven have re-entered my space.

Wookiemouse-I know that I am a horder....I am an addict and I have a problem.

I'm with the HOT SPOT HITTERS too. My room is fairly well organized. There are just some spots that need it so I'm just going to hit those. I spent a lot of time today looking at many of the links wookiemouse had on her blog. There are some gorgeous rooms out there I had never seen. I saved a ton of the pics cause there was some little thing in the picture I liked.

I'm into 'going for broke'...only I really need to start small. I'm pulling stuff out one section at a time and re-visiting why it is exactly I bought stuff and putting things where they belong. A couple years ago, my friends and I got together and reorganized my room, but once it was finished, I let it get 'bad' again.

I plan on getting rid of the desk that is in the room. It takes up too much space and is not at all scrap-friendly. Also, DH's file cabinet needs to be re-worked into the scheme of things because there is no place else for it to go in the house. If I can utilize the top of it as a storage/work area of some sort, I'll be happy. Everything else in the room stays, it's been organized, just the main part of the room has become cluttered with 'scrap stuff' and other misc. things that don't belong.

Ms. Liz Im all for repurposing a piece of furniture in another room and I say give it a go if you REALLY think you can do without such a valuable storage piece. If you decide you want to keep it in the room you can always scrap it up and make it more attractive! Thats what I did with an old office supply cabinet and it is now my biggest asset in my room and I wouldnt trade it for anything! Hope that gives you a little inspiration if you decide to keep it!

I'm starting small. I'm not making any big changes in the layout of the room, so it doesn't make sense for me to pull everything out of the room.

What I did, though, was to start the challenge by clearing everything out of the 2x4 Expedit I have by my desk. Little by little, as I decide how things should be placed, I'll fill it up again.

I have a question for you smart ladies. I have the Expedit placed by my desk to create an L-shape (you can see how it's set up here). Two of the openings in the Expedit are now below my desk. I have the hardest time to figure out what I can put there. I have photos in the upper space, but I'm not happy with it.

Any suggestions?

jrashley: that is a great job! WOW! Although there not 'my' colours, I must say I like them on your cabinet. And you did well on your paintjob also. I like the matching interiour of the drawers.

Hilde; I would place there some supplies I don't use very often, like paint. I also have a lot of boxes, tins and other 'stuff'to alter someday. I would put them there also. And maybe you have some duplicates of supplies 'to be sure'... They can go there till your regular stock is out!

small steps for me. I don't have a ton of stuff (compared to others) but a big part of my goals in getting organized is scrapping a ton and I can't do that if it's all boxed up. But I'm going to tackle each section as we get to it and if I need it (ie, I'm happy with my pp and cs organization as well as my paper scraps so I won't do much those weeks)

No broke for me!
My room was a present from my husband for my last birthday (not even a year ago)So no painting and stuf like that I'm happy with how it is!!
Just have some problems with how and where to put my stuf so it works for me.
I am hoping for a lot of good tips and pictures (we don't have a target or walmart in holland so product you all seem to know by name are sometimes abracadabra to me, so pic's would help) of how you guy's organise your stuf.

Good luck to all of you who are going for broke, it sounds like a realy BIG job for some of you.

Question of the Week: Who's starting small? Who's going for broke?

I'm starting small. I am overwhelmed as it is and think smaller is better. We shall see how it goes! I need to check out the blog for the list of items we will be working on in future weeks so I can sort accordingly!

I have to go small---I don't have a dedicated room and if I take everything out of the corners and closets at the same time, my house will be unlivable. I did some paring down already and some reorganization getting like items into the same space, so that I can attack each category more systematically.

I started - and I had every intention of clearing my room yesterday.

But I found some half finished layouts and finished them. I'm not unhappy about this but seem to be going in the wrong direction...

So the PP and the cardstock are in piles, the embellishments have all met each other finally in one large box(that is definitely a first) but everything is still occupying floorspace in my room.

Maybe today I will sort it out.

I hope you all don't mind one more person joining. I've been saying I can do this by myself, but I always find another excuse.

I have read all the other threads and have decided the only way I can accomplish this is to go for broke. I'll take some before pictures and post them soon.

So far I have purchased some iris boxes, document boxes (still in the package from 2 years ago) and tape for my label maker. I also purchased large ziplock baggies for LO's in progress. Hopefully I should have everything I need.

Today I'm going to pull everything out of the room that isn't nailed down. I'm skeered.

After comments from both my Mother and mother in law about the state of my scrap room I need to go for broke. I will have to keep all my boxes in the room as I am purging things. I need to get boxes --- I'll have to make a trip to the box store and then I will work on emptying things this weekend. I think if I just put all the things in a box and then purge them each week that might work for me.

I'm going slow...my room was painted last year and the furniture moved around, but I'm not sure about the placement of my tables. I'm not going to take everything out as that would really overwhelm me.

"
I still have to get the basement to a point that I can bring everything down.
We had to replace both a furnce, water heater and added the air conditioner this week, so that has consummed my time with the contractor. Now that I do have both Hot water and heat again I can start folding loads of clothes and dream. My DH still has no idea of what I am up to! This will be a jump in a fry pan...hopefuly not.

How did your DH's react to making a scraproom? Approach? "

My DH was glad because my mess was behind the couch in our living room and it looked so bad. The only thing bad with it is the fact that I'm upstairs and he's downstairs.

I just started my go for broke piles based on the weeks ahead and began... however, if you have not started there are some weeks/ categories missing: adhesive/ glues, mini albums/ page protectors, and that catch all misc. (afterall, what category would YOU put shrinky dinks in?)

Hilde - I agree about using the expedit storage under your desk for seldom used supplies. I would also add that you could keep them in a basket or other container that's easy to pull out. That way you can just pull out the container and get what you need.

Question of the Week: Who's starting small? Who's going for broke?

Is there an in between category??? Right. Hot Spot Sitters it is I'd really like to go for broke, but there are a couple of categories (pictures and paper for example) that I LOVE the way they are and they're not going to change. So what's the point of moving those out?? As well, because my room is so small, the layout isn't changing one bit and I'm not changing furniture or the decor of the room at all.

However, everything else is fair game. I already have all my embelishments packed up (or at least I think I do) and stamps are all collected in a couple of boxes as well. Strangely enough, the room is pretty empty ... go figure

And scrappinbee - your blog is awesome!! I can't wait for the next update!

I'm starting small because I'm also trying to do 365 pages this year and can't do that if I can't access my stuff!

Well, thanks to a great friend & some dedication, it seems I'm "going for broke"
I'm terrified as most of my craft stuff is now in the corridor & 2 other rooms - and I am faced with an empty space for the first time since I moved into this house!

I am struggling with everything right now - where do I start with sorting it all out, how to I reset my scrap room, how do I purge at least 25% of this stuff ....
and most of all, how can I keep scrapping too
