Another month in the books and you guys did an outstanding job with February's class. Now that we're all organized, we can move onto our next topic: transformation basics and selection tools.
You can find this month's seed, and PDF HERE.
Be sure to upload a layout for this month's challenge to be entered in the monthly prize drawing! This month's challenge is to upload a layout that includes some type of photo extraction. This one is a little tougher but there are a multitude of ways to accomplish this look so play around, figure out what technique you're most comfortable with (or *least* comfortable with if you're looking for a challenge!) and just have fun with it!
January's class thread can be found HERE.

I had to laugh at you comment about making sure you click on the checkmark or x after resizing! I have done that so may times myself!
You mentioned being able to skew the shadow to make something look lifted off the page... How do you make the shadow a seperate layer? I am using PSE 6.
You did an amazing job on extracting the ponytails! I have such a hard time with that!
Great info in this class! Thank you so much. I am still working on getting everything taged Life is getting in the way! |

I'm having a hard time with this one.. I used the magic extractor but then I couldnt' figure out what to do with the parts that didn't get "erased" I had some weird and funky spots around the edges..
Can you go back in and re-do it? or do you have to start from scratch and re-extract?

What I usually do is go back through with the eraser tool and get rid of any extra stuff that I don't want.
Hope this helps!

Sorry, guys! I thought it was quiet. I just realized that I never checked the "notify me" box to get emails when there was a new response

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that's done that! So frustrating and then when you realize what you've done - d'oh! Palm face, lol.
I have the shadow thing on my list of mini videos that I'd like to do. Short explanation:
- Duplicate the object that I want to shadow
- Recolor the layer so that it's all black (or some other dark color that matches the layout)
- Use a combination of the skew (hold ctrl while dragging corner anchors) and liquify filters to warp thae shadow layer
- Add a gaussian blur of between 7 and 10
- Change the layer mode to multiply and the opacity to around 65 or 75%

As far as the funky bits you get with the magic extractor - you can fiddle with the tolerance to help get a cleaner extraction (you can find it in the top toolbar when your tool is active) but I normally dot the same thing as Jen and go back in with my eraser (usually a soft round brush) Having a pen tablet really helps with this tool! It can be done with a mouse though - just takes a bit more finesse |

This one was more difficult for me. Along with Erica's lesson I needed to find some videos online because it made more sense to me when I could see someone doing the tasks and then pause the video to do some of my own.
Here is my layout for the extraction challenge. Off to try again!

ps. Erica, do you think you could put a link to this forum on the Digi 101 page ~ there are links for Jan. and Feb. and I didn't realize that this message board was here. Luckily I happened to stumble across it the other day!

March Layout
I wanted to put some shapes behind the picture but I couldn't remember how to attach pattern paper to the shapes.

Finally, I am going to post my layout for the month. This was a real challenge and it is still not great, but for a first attempt at extraction I don't think I did too bad! I would love some feedback on the layout -- am still new to digi scrap and would love tips and tricks that help improve my layouts!
Here is my layout: Giddyup
