Allergies are a bummer.

Mindy, my 9 year old does. This time of year kills her sometimes

Dr. has her take Zyrtec at night before bed. Then this time of year she sometimes does Benadryl in the a.m., along with a spray of Nasonex

ETA: I don't just give her this on my own. It was okayed by our ped

I don't have the absolute answer, but I know I've done it and had no adverse effects. Zyrtec is the first line of defense, benedryl is for when I'm truly miserable.

Where's ScrapWench? She'd know.

When I was prescribed Claritin the dr told me to take benadryl also until the claritin had a chance to start working. He said the the 24 hour meds take a few days to really get into your system and start working correctly. Until then he said it was ok to take benadryl to treat the symptoms you have.

Thanks, Deb and Lou. I hate to do Benadryl because of the drowsiness, but it's better than constant sneezing.

Teresa, waiting for you to chime in...

No, one or the other, but not both. But, I take zyrtec in the am and benadryl at bedtime (it causes drowsiness)

Teresa, I have a question - my 9 year old's Dr. allows her to take both this time of year when she's REALLY stuffy

However, Zyrtec is once a day (before bed). And then she can take Benadryl once a day - in the a.m.

So when you say one or the other - not both, why would he say it's okay? Is it because is using them like 12 hours apart?

My family doctor, pediatrician and DSs allergist have all three said it's fine to take Benadryl and Zyrtec in combination.

I would actually advise taking the zyrtec in the am and the benadryl at bedtime.

Yes, some recommend taking both and many do, but the problem that we see is people taking more than the prescribed dose. I have seen people take 2 or 3 zyrtec a day and gobs of benadryl, and then tell me they didn't "feel right"

I usually recomment the benadryl at night because it causes so much drowsiness, it makes you sluggish. The are a few people that have a "paradoxical reaction"-instead of drowsiness, they have jitteriness, insomnia, etc.

Thanks!

Our Dr. has her take Zyrtec at night because of the drowsiness. She takes that regularly. The Benadryl is only occasionally (like now when the pollen is out of control here in Houston) and she doesn't seem to be drowsy from it.

If we don't do the Benadryl when things are bad as an added boost with the Zyrtec, seems like she will always end up with a sinus infection.

But we never give her more than one dose of each per day per her doctor.

Our ped has okay the use of Zyrtec in the morning and if need be a dose of Benadryl in the late afternoon/evening if he's really bad to get through the night.
