Good evening ladies!

Question of the week: Can you buy black melamine "countertops"?

Kidding, but seriously, if anyone knows the answer, I'd sure love to know...

Moving forward, this week we're organizing pens and pencils. As if we all haven't collected enough of those through the years. Don't forget the bonus this week: make sure to get them all in shape. Make sure all of your pens work and all of your pencils are sharpened.

wookiemouse's blog

original two peas thread

Ok, now that that's taken care of, the real question of the week:

If you handwrite your journaling/doodle on your pages, what are your favorite pens to use?

Go -Becky-! You're on your game... How's your organizing going, by the way?

Can you tell I'm determined? Lol... I found these really cool "legs" from IKEA, but I need to figure out what to do as far as a "table top" - My first thought was just stain/polyurethane thick plywood, but s/o (trying to be difficult, b/c it's what he does best) said: "That's going to look like $h!t." Your point? It was a cheap and functional solution.

Hey Becky! Welcome back!
You can get prefab'd counter tops from home depot/ loews (and they custom cut it up to 3 strait cuts)

QOTW: I hand journal! But no particular brand favorite.

crisann, I got a melamine shelf at a home store for the top of my desk. Also use a door as a desk top under my sewing machine. Both work great for me. One is white and the door is a natural stain and poly finish. Hope you find something that works for you in black.

Question of week, I journal with American Crafts #03 and #05. Also have #08, but the other two are finer point and I use them more.

Pens and pencils are in clear bins in my top drawer, but I just got a new little tower for my Copic markers which I love. It is only 4 x 5 inches of tabletop space and I can see all the colors and numbers. Must post a picture.

I agree with June!! I love the AC #05 pen. Definetly my favorite!!

This week is done .... I have a drawer in my desk and I have 4 small-ish baskets (about 1" by 6" ??)
One is for my old CM pens.
One for my "colouring" markers, no Copics yet. (Yet being the jey word here )
One is for metallic and white pens.
One is for regular pens and pencils and pencil sharpener.

If I ever get paint to paint my hardware box thingy, I'll probably spray paint these as well.

Question of the week : I have no idea, but I'm interested in what this will look like when it's done

Taking a break from painting - I'm about 1/2 way done with the first coat. I think it's going to take two to really cover up the yellow. Tomorrow the floors go in, and then I start putting my furniture back!

Hand journaling - I write with whatever pen I can find at the time. I have a tray full of them, and I just never pay much attention to the brand name.

Black Melamine countertop must be available somewhere. You might have to custom order your size.

QotW: I have a set of gel pens from a business store. They're pretty good but I don't really pay attention to which brands I buy.

Organising: All pens are stored in my shoulder tote with my tools. I need to go through them and test for dead ones. Also, I need to sharpen my watercolour pencils. Pretty simple week but I'm still back on die cuts.

Crisann: Did you sign up for 52 card pick up or is your hand going to interfere? I was going to sign up tonight but I don't want to do it alone. I never finish online courses by myself and thought maybe with company I would.

Anyone else interested in that course at big picture scrapbooking?

Kris74 - my hand has seen better days. there are no doubts about that.
hmm... i wasn't exactly thrilled last night when s/o yelled at me for getting dirt in it and decided he needed to "torture me" and clean it. um, hello... i work in a scrap yard. so today, we've got a butterfly bandage, a band-aid, a piece of gauze, and an ACE bandage on it. if i get dirt in it today, we'll know this is a lost cause...

Oh, and I failed at staying within my categories. I'm going to have to figure out what to do with alcohol inks/glimmer mists now...

-Becky- - you're rocking this out! i mean, seriously... you've accomplished so much in the last few days.

Scrappnbee - are you signing up for the 52 card pickup class over at bps? It starts May 27.

eclectic stuff - i haven't yet, only b/c i was waiting to get paid today... i'm still planning on it, in spite of my hand. what's the worst that's going to happen? i'm going to be learning to "scrapbook" w/ one hand. lol... besides, i had already started buying the supplies before i decided to hurt my hand (as if i did that one on purpose)...

oh, and just for entertainment - my life is, um, extremely interesting lately. i've been having a hard time with the foster/the leash to begin with in the last few days. Last night, I put her out on a leash and Thor out with her. They were playing around and she wrapped herself/her leash around me and pulled my feet out from underneath me. Ouch! Although, I didn't get hurt, I had to laugh...

This has just been one of those weeks.

As far as organizing, I seriously think it's time to do some more shopping! I've decided that I don't have enough pens/pencils. I have like one little clear acrylic cup with a few random journaling/paint pens. lol...

Oh, and I've decided that I'll never be happy with my paper storage. I reorganized it all the night I said I cleaned up the disaster I made. I just don't get it. More or less, everything else is working for me, that's not! I've tried horizontal storage (paper rack). I've tried vertical storage (cropper hoppers). I'm really not sure what the answer is at this point.

Crisann - How do you have your paper categorized?? Is there some paper that would work vertical and some horizontal?? For example - I have some of my themed stuff, Hallowe'en, pregnancy/baby stuff, Stampin Up papers etc. all in IRIS containers and they're vertical. The rest (mainly by manufacturer), is all in Cropper Hoppers and is veritical. It works for me as there's less to rifle through when I'm just looking for random papers. If I'm doing something themed, I only have to grab one box ...

So who's in for the 52 card pickup??
I think I am.

Oh, wow - how the weeks are speeding past! I've been missing in action and realize I have some catching up to do.

Crisann - what's going on with your hand? Hope it's not too bad! (Haven't looked though earlier threads yet..) And, do you need the melamine to be a true black? Or a certain size? I believe IKEA has black-brown options for desk tops in a few sizes.

Becky - you seem to be really gung-ho about this process - good for you!

I'm hand writing on most of my layouts, but haven't found a favorite pen. I use many different ones.

Can't wait to use this weekend to play catch-up!

Laminate comes in a lot of colors, but it's a different process than melamine. Melamine is paper with a plastic vinyl coating. It will burn and scratch whereas laminate doesn't. I wouldn't suggest it for a worksurface.

Just a warning about working on black. It is very hard to do. No reflection and it shows every bit of oil on your hands. It's really pretty harsh. IMO

Ok, on to pencils and pens. I have 5 of the Signo white ones, 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 black plus 6 mechanical pencils. They're all sharpened, culled thru, and snug in a cubie drawer. I just can't find my sharpener which was on my desk yesterday. grrrr

So, I just signed up for 52 card pickup. Hope to see some of you there.

On paper organization: I can't figure it out either. I have to do it horizontally and I have it done mostly by color but it doesn't really work. I still can't find anything. I don't think it will work any better by manufacturer either, I don't really think that way. I think the only solution is less paper but I love my paper. It makes me happy to sort through it!

Good point Nantini. I never thought of the drawbacks.

Thanks, girls. I've kind of had to be gung-ho about it....I have very limited time to get it all together. Honestly, that's a good thing for me - it forces me to be very fast in making decisions about things, and will help with the deciding what to keep and what not to.

eclectic stuff - i'm signed up for 52 card pickup! i just logged into the classroom to check out the "prework"... started working on my deck... i'll finish it this weekend. s/o promised to take me to michael's to pick up the last few things i "need"...

kris - my paper was sorted somewhat like that: all the older paper was sorted, by color, horizontally, on a rack - all the newer paper was sorted, by manufacturer, vertically, in cropper hoppers. still, though, it's just such a pain-in-the-@$$ to get to any of it...

Very cute June!! Did you buy it or make it??

Crisann - But how do you scrap?? Do you think - oh, I need something blue for this. Or do you think - that Basic Grey line is perfect!! Maybe it's just the paper I choose, but when I'm scrapping random topics, I have an idea of what paper I want and just pull out that particular brand. kwim?? Could it be that your paper is packed in so thick you can't easily flip through it (if it's veritical)?? Or for the horizontal stuff that there's too much stuff in the way and you have to move it all to get to your paper??

So I guess the heat is on to mak this decision, huh. Well, it'll have to wait until next week at least as it's payweek then. There have been a few too many "presents for me" this week so I have to take it easy till then

My pens & pencils are all organized. I don't have a favorite pen to write with but would love to find one that flows, writes easily like a regular ink pen and is archivally safe. I do use Zig fine point markers to journal for most things. I haven't used the Copic markers but they look fun!

kris - a little of both - that's the thing... maybe, you're right. buy a bunch more cropper hoppers and sort better - less in each cropper hopper... oh, and label them... or, maybe, there really is no ideal solution... lol...

make a decision, ladies!

eclectic stuff and i need more company... lol...

Definitely label them Crisann!! If you don't want to commit to the label, just punch out circles or something, write out what is in that CH and stick it on with a glue dot. What I did originally was punch out a circle of one of the actual papers in there. If there were 6 manufacturers in that Cropper Hopper, there were 6 mismatched circles down the spine of the CH. I've changed to all white labels and scallops, besides the point.

Well I'm off to the beach tomorrow morning. Have a great weekend everyone!!

so, i went shopping today, at m's... came home and found both my two peas and my interweave packages waiting for me, so it looks like i have to find homes for all of this stuff now, or maybe not until after i've had a chance to play with it all...

you know what i just realized... i've, more or less, made it through 21 weeks w/o shopping - as in my last two peas order was placed in late December and the only thing i recall buying at the craft store since then is beads, so...

i finished my deck this morning for 52 card pick up. You can check it out on my blog. I need to get into the habit of posting my projects there and not here...

I'm here...barely. The room is coming together, albeit a bit slowly. I've already purged a lot of stuff - I'm through papers, inks, alphabets, stickers, diecuts, chipboard, ribbon and embossing supplies. I still have a lot to go through, including my embellishments, but hopefully it's getting there.

I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I store my CTMH pens in a drawer of one of my 3-drawer containers. This way they are flat and all together since I have every color. LOL, back from when I was a consultant years ago, but they are still going strong! I store my chalks and chalk pencils in the drawer right below. My other pens I have in a drawer in my desk. I have some old silverware holders that I've used for various other things over the years and this works perfect! My sharpies are in a stamp holder. Everything lays flat this way and is right at reach. I really love it. Before this challenge I actually had three, yes three, PC revolving holders full of this stuff. Now, it's right where I can get at it and I don't have to search to see what's what. This definitely works better!

Pen Organization

QOTW: I love to hand journal, even though I don't always do it. It really depends on how much there is to journal. But I really love the zig writers. They are my favorite. I do use other writers as well, but never gel pens. I am not a gel pen fan at all.

Up in Canada, this is our first long weekend of the summer and we headed to the beach! GORGEOUS weather, great friends, far too much wine But it's back to reality now. Once the laundry is done it's back to that ridiculous paper pile.

Don't know about the melamine, but my computer desk is a door that I covered with an ebony woodstain from Minwax. My desk is huge, cheap, and non-reflective. I have mine resting on two file cabinets, but your table legs might be able to support it. Since a door is so long, maybe you'll want to attach the legs 12 inches from the ends instead of smack in the corners.

I keep my pens and pencils in snap boxes so I can easily take them with me to crops. Although, I really don't use them when I do go to crops, which isn't very often anyway. Maybe I'll transfer them all to a drawer. And I have another box on a shelf that holds my paint markers. There are only a few pens that I go to regularly (black, white, gold silver) and I keep them in a cup on my desk with a few other tools.

Crisann, I'm in the process of changing the way I store my paper too. It's just not working and I'm digging thru everything. sigh~

I think what works best for me now are 2 cubes that I have put the cropper hopper dividers in. I have around 30 of those. I have them labeled Basic Grey, Cosmo, Crate, October Afternoon, etc. Then I have the generic and plain papers under the colors (red, orange, blue, purple, etc.).

Glad to see so many of you staying on track! We've come a long way!!

crisann, I looked at your 52 class Deck. Way to go. I love that paper you chose! I had just ordered some for my stash.

Wish I could take the class with you all, but I have several unfinished projects to catch up on. I will follow your progress, though, as it is great to see how these things are going for us all now that we are getting toward the end of our challenge!

I can already see a big difference in how I work. Plus, it seems to be spilling over into other areas of my home, starting to think about organizing my sewing stuff

Way to go June!! Glad your new system is working out for you!!

YAY on all these fellow 52 card pickup-ers I'm planning on signing up. I'm planning on signing up tonight when I get home. I'll have to hustle making my deck, but I really like yours Crisann!! I may borrow a few ideas

Crisann - How's the hand doing??

ScrappnBee - I guess it's a compliment when DH assumes you can be in several places at once?? Mine does that too and he gets a look when he wonders where his supper is on those days.

So I'm thinking I'll be adding to my pen/marker collection. When I was picking up my stuff from the LSS garage sale, I was talking to them re the Copics. O.M.G. I seriously feel a new addiction coming The only saving grace is I tend not to do much scrapping in the nicer months as we're NEVER inside .... so maybe I'll be able to hold off with just a couple of markers for now

Hi! I am fairly new here, so I hope it's okay if I jump in. This challenge caught my eye, as I have dozens upon dozens of pens!

I organize my pens into glass containers by type of pen, and have them all lined up in a shelf in my studio. I like this system because it allows me to easily move the containers around my studio, keeps everything organized, and it's easy to see which pen is where (either by looking through the jar, or down from the top).

Here's a photo - Studio - Pen Shelf

For the question of the week - I use so many different pens, depending on the type of work I'm doing, but for journaling, I do like gel pens. I handwrite my blog posts, and typically use gel pens that as well. I like the Pilot G2s especially, and they are acid free/archival.

What a weekend, I decided to reboot my computer from scratch This is a three day process, but my USB ports were not working anymore and after trying a kazillion things to get them to work again I decided to save my stuff and wipe out the computer. I have to say after it was done it felt like I had done some major spring cleaning! It felt good. Now my computer is up and running again and we're back in business.

Anyways, welcome Lisa, It's great that you've joined us. I love your jars and your space looks so calming. I noticed your scanner sitting on the desk in the pic and realized its the one I just bought and hooked up this weekend. I haven't tried it yet.

QOTW: other than the black malemine (lol) which I really don't know the answer to. My favorite journaling pen is Le Pen from Marvy.

Remember that MM carousel that I really didn't know what to do with, well I decided that I would use it for my pens. I think it will work great so here is a picture of my pens.

kris - my hand's doing better, finally. starting to heal/scab over, so... that's a good sign. obviously, i'm still managing to function with it. i've just been keeping it clean/wrapped at work.

Hi Girls,

I'm back from my trip to Malta (it was realy great but having some trouble to land here again...miss the warmth, it's still to cold over here)
Some of you where realy bussy when I was gone Welcome Becky and great job

QOTW: I do not have not found a favorite pen to journal with.
My pens currenly are in a white flower pot on top of the Ikea drawers, I think a will leave them like that.
The ones I don't use often are in a penbox in my drawer.

I've fallen a little behind, distracted by the 52 Card Pick Up class over at BPS.

Question of the week: If you handwrite your journaling/doodle on your pages, what are your favorite pens to use?

I'm ashamed to say I don't handwrite anything. All my journaling is on the computer and I know I need to change that. I love finding papers with my father's and grandmother's handwriting, but I just can't stand my own. I might have to challenge myself to do just one layout with some hand journaling and see how it goes.

My CTMH markers are stored in an Exclusive Inks Organizer with my ink pads. My set of Prismacolor pencils are stored in their original tin and are kept on top of the 3-drawer organizer that houses my embossing stuff, paints and chalks. Even with the pencil tin on top, the organizer fits nicely in an Expedite cubbie.

The only other pens (Sakura glitter gelly roll and write 'n rub foiling pen) I own are stored in my PC tool caddy. There is plenty of room in the tool caddy to house some new journaling pens. I'll have to purchase one of the Zig markers that a few of you have mentioned here.

Off to take photos, post to my blog and on to week 22!
