How much should we tip for valet parking at our hotel in Chicago? Do we tip before or after we get our vehicle?

Thanks!

Living here in Chicago I don't know about hotel valets (I don't go to hotels here often) however I usually tip valets about $5. Less if it takes forever to get my car, more if they are super nice.

With restaurants and such you usually tip after you get your car back.

Thanks! We've never had valet parking before so we're a little clueless.

Well, I live in Chicago so it's been a long time since I've stayed at a hotel here, however, we have tipped the valet at hotels in other cities. We always tip when we drop the car off and when we pick it up at hotel. This is because when we drop it off, they help getting the bags out of the car as well as taking the car. Generally, we tip the valet around $5 more if we have a lot of bags for them to deal with.

We usually tip two or three for parking garages (not hotel though, residential complex). For dinner it's usually around 5 unless the suck royally or are super nice and fast.

Tip when you get your car back.

Side note: this is basic common sense, but don't leave expensive stuff sitting out in your car. If you have an ipod or whatever, either bring it in with you, or lock it in the glove box. I am not saying they are likely to steal, but with a possibility of several people getting in and out of your car with out you present you should be safer.

DH and I usually detach just the car key from our set of keys (we each have a series of individual key rings on a carabiner) and give the valet only the car keys.

Don't feel like you HAVE to use complementary valet service. In most (not all, I think some hotels require you to use their valet) you can skip that and park your car yourself. Also don't feel like you HAVE to skip it. If you don't want to deal with parking your own car in the City (and believe me, I know the feeling) go right ahead and take advantage of the valet.
