Hello everyone, and thanks for coming back for another edition of Patterned Paper Every Which Way!

Mixing Simple Patterned Paper

July Class Description:

Mixing patterned papers..sometimes there is a fine line between really cute and too much. This month we're going to stick to simple patterns...polka dots and a bit of graph. My biggest tip on mixing patterns is to mix the size of the patterns. Polka dots are easy to measure! By using a tiny polka dot, small polka dot and a medium sized polka dot I was able to mix them without the layout being too overwhelming. Try to picture the layout with the same size dots in each area...it wouldn't have worked. Another tip is to mix patterns that have a neutral background with those that are bolder. If I had used all white/cream backgrounds or all colorful polka dot backgrounds the layout wouldn't have had the same effect. It's always fun to add in a bit of contrasting pattern as well. On this layout I added in a bit of graph pattern. A simple touch but one that can be the perfect touch. You'll notice that there is a graph patterned paper, graph patterned tape as well as a light graph pattern on the chipboard letters. A simple stripe would have been a good addition too, or even a floral. Balance is the key! Later this year we'll cover mixing slightly busier patterns...so stay tuned!
