I'm one of the lost! I expected that though - I'm in school full time & working full time & planning my son's bar mitzvah. Barely time to breath! I'm going to try for this one though. |

You guys rock.
I'm just happy to on this journey with a few "friends."
Has anybody else been having trouble posting responses? I can create a new post just fine, but when I hit "submit" on a reply to a thread, it just times out and won't post. Last week I know we were having a lot of trouble with double posting . . . I'm just hoping that THIS one posts when I hit submit. A girl could get a complex! |

OK, that worked -- obviously. But the only way I can get it to work is to uncheck the box that says "Preview this message before posting."
So I guess I'm going to be posting "Preview-Free" from now on. Look out! |

Here, and so so happy that y'all are here, too.
This has already boosted my skill level and confidence considerably. I know that I know 1% of less than 1% that is worth knowing, but even that makes a difference!
Took a shot of my daughter that is crazy gorgeous - with beautiful bokeh and colors - in the street in front of our house and you would never know where we were. She has gorgeous, movie-star eyes that fascinate me and demand to be photographed. It has really motivated me to: improve my white balance, get up to speed on natural lighting, improve SOOC colors, read a TON about focusing, learn post-processing in PS5,
Now she plans to join me on the 12 week lessons, too, using my XT and my older lenses. YAY!!!!!
The aperture lesson sparked a series of epiphanies.
THANK YOU ALL!!!
I hope the rest of you are doing your happy dances each week too. That brings us all good luck!

Kellybird55: ITA about the flash lesson. I think I need to spend a lot more time on flash. I'm doing the MLK online course -- I'm on Week 2, and Week 4 is on Flash. We'll see how it goes.

Ay Yi yi Amanda, going to make me put my money where my mouth is?
T2I, 50mm wide open and standing really really close to her
So, here are the things I notice that I need to work on:
1) I was too close, wide open, so the DOF was really, really shallow, like 1/4". Thanks to Lizz's awesome DOF posting, now I have a MUCH bigger clue, albeit still an itty bitty one.
2) I over-shopped her skin with softening to cover her teenage acne. Having to do this, though, has led her to care more and to take better care of her skin - so the beauty is what people see!
3) I've been tinkering with skin tones and I think this one is too dark/yellow/warm.
4) I don't like the crop but screwed up the original and didn't make a back-up! Took my LR34 book to bed as punishment.
I would love CC on it - brutal, please.
While I'm at it, I took a glamour shot of my husband this afternoon. I had 2Peas, well, MANY PEAS on my shoulders telling me: bokeh! DOF! Watch the background! Don't get run over! Make sure SS is at least 2x focal length! Look for catch lights!
Shot it, shopped it, cropped it. Has a terrible shadow on the lower left of my arm holding the camera. Going back another day this week to take some more in this location earlier in the day. Need to learn how to mask and adjust for highlights, etc.
Brutal CC, please. I think he's a little light. He's hispanic and has pale skin except the sunburned parts in the summer.
Canon 5D, same 50mm 1.4 lens, late afternoon

OK, I'm not totally thrilled with how these turned out, but my friend followed instructions MUCH better than DS does! (As a side note, she's due TOMORROW! Doesn't she look amazing?!?!)

After trying to bribe Sam to sit by the window at the Chinese restaurant, this is the only photo of interest from that place:
5D 50mm SS1/40@ f/2.8 ISO100
Was trying to catch the lights" in the bottle and the pretty bubbles.
Ben, at a Mexican restaurant, after he jammed a blueberry gumball in his mouth. Got the catch lights, but had to hold him still and every setting was bad, and I didn't set my WB.
I need to re-read this lesson, find the right time of day, and stop letting everyone else in my house give me their opinion. At least, they're all lining up for the photos I'm printing for their 4x6 books (the reward for posing for me).
5D 50mm SS1/60@f/5 ISO1600 (yah, totally jacked the settings)
But this one made the whole exercise worthwhile. Inside, after we lost the daylight, one stand lamp and one umbrella light that we have no idea what to do with. But I like his expression and he was happy to pose!

I'm not going to have time to do everything, because we're all set for "the weekend from h*ll" as we've been calling it. But I didn't want to drop out completely, so this is...let's see...
ISO 2000, 1/30, F5
It's mostly natural light from the window to his right, but I ended up turning on a lamp too. He wasn't posing, so I just got what I could. His skin tone is obviously way off...he looks almost blue! I don't know if that's white balance or from the gray couch he's standing over?

This was a bit of a challenge for me cuz I'm not quite sure how to "meter for subject as opposed to metering for the light" I have no idea where my exposure meter is on my camera(canon50d)!! But here are my pics anyway..
Catchlights
Subject parallel to light
Subject parallel to light with me perpendicular to light

Here's my best example of catchlights for this week. This is my 2 year old, Nick. Please excuse the runny nose (we've had that for a week now) and the balloon string. He wouldn't let go of his daddy's birthday balloon. There was a window behind me and to my left. You can also see the light in the ceiling. It's so frustrating when NOBODY will let you take their picture, isn't it?! It's times like this that I wish I had a dog. LOL

I borrowed a friend's dog for the weekend because my kids are rebelling and won't pose unless bribed.
