As we head into Thanksgiving, let us take a moment to be thankful that we are half way through the 12 Weeks to Better Photography course!

Week 6 was fun.

Moving on to Week 7. Here's the WEEK 7 PDF.

I shot this twice, with my DSLR (No macro lens or mode) and with my P&S, which has a macro mode.

From my SLR:

Image shot at f/4.5, ISO 800, 18-70mm @ 70mm

From my P&S in Auto (non-macro) mode

And P&S in Macro mode

I also cropped it down to get more of a true "macro" look, which you can see on my photo blog

Oh, and this lesson totally made me want (NEED!) a macro lens! LOL

I am still doing it too....I am going to take my pics for this week tomorrow. I would have done it today..cuz it was a great day today...sunny and warm-ish but I was shooting 3 kids for a friend of mine...she's giving pics of the kids to her boyfriend as a christmas present..and after the shoot I went to a bball scrimmage and by then it was dark.

I literally slept all weekend, and Pead'd from my phone when I wasn't snoozing or reading books about skin-tone, lighting or exposure. My kids wrecked the house while hubby watched TV.

Guess that was a holiday weekend!

Let's see if I can whip this puppy out, so that we get some traction on week 7!!!

Alrighty, folks, here we go! Since this thread is empty, I'm going to do my best to fill it up!

Thanks again to Amanda for taking the time to do this. This exercise, like the others, has really forced me to stretch my comfort level and really WORK to get better photos, or to at least understand why so many come out crappy.

For these, I tried, for the first time, to set up a black backdrop (a velvet throw) and use reflectors (the Interfit 5-in-1, two of them, a big and a small) to get more light into my office at night.

All of these were comparably cropped, i.e., not just zoomed by cropping tightly from gigantic megapixel shots, so the amount of the final photo is taken from the same amount of the original photo, if that makes sense.

I adjusted minimally in LR3, then, for the first time, copied the adjustment settings from the first photo to the others! YAY!

And for the first one, I tried using the magic wand in PS CS5 to select the not-so-black black velvet background, make it totally black, then used a mask to erase it off the areas that shouldn't have been selected. All new to me! YAY!

Still not happy with the teensy weensy DOF from the small aperture used at ISO 1250 to avoid having to use the flash. More to play with later! YAY!

All shot with a 5D, 50mm 1.4 lens, ambient light (with the reflectors). Set WB with a PhotoVision Calibration Target (LOVE that tool - it is a disk with white, neutral grey and black on it), then double checked with a Color Checker passport photo at the beginning of the series and found the SOOC images to be very true to real life. Not necessary tools, but ones that are helping me better understand the technical aspects. The calibration target showed me that my 5D underexposes vs. what the histogram shows, i.e., when I loaded the photo of the target into LR3, the histogram was distinctly to the left of what it had showed in-camera.

Yeah, yeah, too much information, but maybe my tales of trial and tribulation will help someone else's learning curve!

Here goes!

5D 50mm ISO1250 1/50@f/3.2 about 2.5 feet from the stuff

5D 50mm ISO1250 1/40sec @ f3.2, about 6 to 8 inches from the stuff using a 12mm extension tube:

5D 50mm ISO1250 1/50sec @ f3.2, about 6 to 8 inches from the stuff using a 12mm extension tube:

5D 50mm ISO1250 1/20sec @ f5 (wanted more DOF), about 2 to 3 inches from the stuff using a 25mm extension tube:

5D 50mm ISO1250 1/20sec @ f5 (wanted more DOF on the button), about 2 to 3 inches from the stuff using a 25mm extension tube:

I would like more color saturation in these, more vibrance, etc., but am still learning the basics of photoshop and lightroom!

THANKS FOR LOOKING!!

POST YOURS!!!!

Oh, Lizz, and while I can't seem to shut up, I really like your action figure!

And, if you like taking close-ups, you might be as fascinated as I am with extension rings if they make them for Nikon . . . kids keep finding me crouched over my desk taking photos of little things, just for fun.

Stuff like this:

The two rings (12mm and 25mm) can be ganged, or used individually. Biggest challenge so far since I always seem to be inside at 2am playing with them has been getting enough light on things to photograph w/o flash while hand-holding.

Thanks Alison! I actually just got a macro adapter; maybe I'll grab Lego man tomorrow and try it out! I'll have to look into one of the tubes though, thanks!

Ok...here's my pics for week 7! Finally
I took this one using my P&S on macro mode...the one i took using portrait mode was blurry...

This is one from my DSLR and I don't have a macro lens altho I would soo love to get one...this was my 50mm at ISO 1000 f1.4 with SS I think around 80. I cropped it and it doesn't look as crisp as it did before I cropped it.
