Bumping this again this year because I can't stop thinking about them and can't wait until Thanksgiving!

Me too! I've been eating low-sugar/low-carb this year. This is going to be one of my "exceptions" at TG because they are THAT good. They were the first thing to go on the menu this year.

P-Dub's mashed potatoes were #2

And then turkey

I made these last year and yes, they ARE amazing. I want to make them again, but I'm going to try something different this year. I hope I don't regret it, but my parents are coming for dinner this year--my Dad is diabetic, and my mom has just lost 35 lbs and has another 10 or so to go. I don't want to sabotage either one of them any more than I already plan to. I'm going to try a sweet potato recipe made with sugar-free syrup and brown sugar Splenda. I have my fingers crossed, but this will be impossible to top.

PS-- Don't even bother making it if you deviate from the recipe at all for diet...I made it once to be much lower calorie and it was awful. Don't be an allrecipes reviewer (lol) make it as written...perfection.

I used the brown sugar Splenda blend the time I screwed it up---it came out awful, and I was SO sad! Obviously the diabetes has to take precedence in this case, though.

I have NEVER made a Tyler F recipe that didn't get applause from my family. He's my favorite F.N. chef and certainly not used to his true potential!!!

Oh! ...and another different thing that I did this time was make:
(from AllRecipes, not TyFlo, lol)

"Cranberry Apple Pie" AllRecipes (Just cut sugar to 1 & a half cups instead of 2)

Uses Pre-made crust, easy breezy.
Only thing really changed was the sugar (suggested from many comments) and one & a half c was just right! Man, what a nice change from plain apple pie...used fresh cranberries, and for the orange juice I just squeezed it fresh from one orange since I had a few. Oh, and "pumpkin pie spice" is pretty similar to the "apple pie spice" called for, and since it was only a half tsp, that is what I used. We had gala apples (sweet & tart) so used those.

I'm bumping with a few questions for PetEnthusaist about the cranberry apple pie recipe changes.

First question, the sugar. You say you reduced it down from two cups to one and a half cups sugar. I only see one half cup sugar shown in the recipe. We're you quadrupling the recipe to make four pies? You didn't use the cranberry sauce at all, just fresh cranberries and fresh orange juice you had squeezed yourself? How much, please? I don't see orange juice listed in the ingredients, either, so I'm assuming the orange juice plus fresh cranberries was substituted for the cranberry sauce?

Any additional tips on the changes you made to the cranberry apple pie recipe would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Omg ScrappinNana that link was not the correct recipe AT all for the same Cranberry Apple Pie! I apologize to everyone it has been wrong for two years. I am so used to using allrecipes I was thinking I got it there when in fact it was Taste of Home. So SO sorry!
http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Cranberry-Apple-Pie

--->ETA: I wasn't going crazy at all it used to be on Allrecipes and was apparently taken off and they attached a diff recipe with same name to that same link on Allrecipes. The taste of home link is the right recipe. Don't like the shenanigans my printed copy was orig allrecipes . Argh BEWARE everyone keep printed copies as apparently links may switch to similar recipes on allrecipes

The following still applies to the recipe now on Taste of Home:

Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup orange juice

1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
4 cups sliced peeled tart apples
2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries

2 tablespoons butter
Directions
In a large bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. Add apples and cranberries; toss gently. Line a 9-in. pie plate with bottom pastry. Add filling; dot with butter.
Roll the remaining pastry to fit top of pie. Cut vents in pastry, using a small apple cutter if desired. Place over filling; seal and flute the edges.
Bake at 425° for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°; bake 50 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Yield: 6-8 servings.

Just printed this to try for Christmas (don't have all of the ingredients for tomorrow and town is a half hour away). Has anyone made half of the candied yams recipe? My kids don't like sweet potatoes so I would rather make less. Would the baking time change?

Technically, yams and sweet potatoes aren't the same vegetable.

They were a hit at the big family dinner I took them to as well. Seriously, people were seeking me out to say how guuuuuud they were! And this is a bunch of women who are amazing cooks. We usually bring the deviled eggs and a salad or something easy because I'm not much of a cook and don't want to ruin dinner. But if I bring these every year from now on, I'm in

I was wondering the same thing. I admit I've never peeled and sliced sweet potatoes-I've always just baked them whole. I wonder if it takes about the same amount of time it would for regular potatoes. I need to figure out how early to start these.

Here it is! I had posted it on food.com

sweet potato crunch

Sweet Potato Crunch

3 cups mashed sweet potatoes

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 pinch cinnamon

1 pinch nutmeg

1/2 cup butter, melted

Topping:

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup flour

1 cup chopped walnuts or 1 cup pecans

1/3 cup butter

Mix sweet potatoes, sugar, eggs, spices and butter thoroughly.

Mix all the topping ingredients together with a fork and sprinkle on top of sweet potatoes.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Oh my goodness. These make my top 5 list. I'm not sure what the other four are right now but these are AMAZING! And I felt so grownup using real cinnamon sticks.

Don't be like me. I used a lot of sweet potatoes and put them in a large casserole. The butter/sugar mixture didn't seem like it would be nearly enough so I added half again. The whole thing ended up soaking in butter and brown sugar. It would have been plenty without it.
