OH
MY
GOSH
I stopped reading her blog when the whole fiasco surfaced a couple of years ago when she wouldn't refund a fellow Pea for a class, or whatever it was.
This woman has no integrity, no class and NO business sense. Not to mention that I think she is so NOT an artist. But whatever. |

Here's what I left on the blog:
I know a lot of people in this craft use things for inspiration and it is commonly called Scraplifting. But I think you copied Fossil and it's called Stealing.
I know everyone here will get it, but do you think she will

I went and looked in the Unity catalog I picked up yesterday at their booth at CHA....the birds are in there, but there is a sticker over them that says "ITEM NOT AVAILABLE"....I guess Unity must be aware and not selling these! |

Hi! Unity has no intention of producing this now, ever, or making it a part of the Unity line.

If Unity had no intention of ever, producing this stamp, why was it in the CHA catalog? Although, I do find it respectful that you decided to remove it.
Of course, I'm assuming that you're from Unity in the first place. |

I find this thread ironic since there are other threads of Peas discussing how excited they were to see peeks so they could make counterfeits of new products. |

I think that is the ugliest purse! The fossil one is bad enough but the DD one is really awful.
I'm all for copying layouts or projects for MY OWN PERSONAL scrapbooks but not to teach a class or sell something with my name attached to it. |

There is a big difference between making a handmade flower or whatever for personal use and copying someone else's design to try to make a profit from it (by holding a class and producing a stamp).

Oh, I'll come right out and say that I absolutely make counterfeit flowers/embellishments, for my own use. But I don't make an embellishment and then sell it. Hell, I don't even make one and give it away. There is a *big* difference between copying something for your own use and copying something to sell.
FWIW- I think that if DD had just said "I loved this purse, I copied it for myself." there would be no problem. The problem lies in the fact that she tried to make a profit from her "inspired" designs.
I don't think the Unity is to blame at all. I just find it interesting that they are stating they had no intention of ever producing this stamp when it was in their catalogs. If I were the owners of Unity, I think I'd be pretty pissed at the this whole situation. Not only do they have the costs (paying DD, possibly prototype stamps etc) associated with this stamp, but now they also have a lot of negative publicity to go along with it. |

I think she meant "ever" as in the future not as in it was never considered at any time at all.

I don't think the negative publicity will hurt Unity. In fact, I think they'll walk away from this unscathed because of the actions they have taken so far. They pulled that product, and quite possibly are looking at all of DD's other stamp submissions with great scrutiny to make sure they are in fact her designs and not stolen from another source (one we're not aware of).
Unity is smart not to say anything more than what they've put out there already. That the stamp is not going to be sold, ever. As someone who has designed scrapbook papers for a big company, this speaks volumes that they are taking this seriously and will get to the bottom of it. They will even have footing to go after Donna Downey legally because, as a designer, she signed duplicate copies stating any work submitted to the company for manufacture is of her own creation. |

I have to agree that Unity has done everything right once they realized the problem ... that's the difference between being a professional and well, not.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Unity again - they're top notch, but DD will never see dime one from my purse - and that stems from the last DD debacle. |

Ahh, I see. I took it to mean that they never considered it. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
I imagine you are correct Suzanne and in fact, I think Unity has acted with integrity. I plan on purchasing some stamps from them in the near future (just not the DD ones )
But as a small business owner myself, I can tell you I would not be a happy camper if someone tried to pull something like that on me. Not happy, at all. I would be worried that her actions would reflect poorly on me and my business, hypothetically anyway. Not that I expect Unity Stamps to publicly denounce DD, b/c that would be unprofessional, but I guess I'm just sympathizing with the owner(s). |

scraplifting for your own book is one thing but when you knowingly and willing take a design to profit off of it is a WHOLE different story.
