because it was so DANG messy and started from scratch that way???? I like the furniture layout just fine but the piles of stuff are taking over.... Any suggestions...I have an adjoining room I can use to do this...but I am unsure how to start...thanks! | |

When we did the Wookiemouse organizational challenge that is exactly what you do in week #2-- empty your room... It sounds like a pain (and it is) but in the end it is so worth it to be totally organized!
What I did was kinda box up like items so that when I actually started sorting it made it easier. I literally had piles all over my guest room and down the hall for months.. And then each week I would sort a portion of it on my dining room table. You can see Wookies blog here

I've done it. A couple of years ago, I took everything out...loaded it into my kitchen and guest room and touched everything before I put it back. It helped motivate me that I had bought furniture and had to take everything out, anyway. | |

When I emptied mine (except for the furniture), I bought a bunch of the big rubber maid blue tubs and put like items in there. I wanted the tubs to store other things, so it was a Win-Win thing.
It was absolutely WONDERFUL. We have since moved, so I did it again...by force  ...the problem I have had with that is that the room is much smaller. I am struggling with unnecessary items that were in my room....collections, "stuff", mementos. I've decided to just give all my penguin ornaments given through SBing to my DD for her new house (for Christmas). Then I'll just give the rest to Good Will. | |

I did this in December (moved rooms). It was good. I have had my hands on almost every single thing I own in here in the last 2-3 months. One thing I discovered is that while I have a lot of stuff--I don't have as much as I thought I did. That was a pretty big shock. So I went right out shopping. Ha. Well, I kind of did. Even my husband says I don't have as much stuff as it looked like I had in the other room. I think that means things are well organized now? Because the room is not any bigger and in fact might be a little smaller and I have my office in here now, too... | |

I took everything out except for furniture. I grouped things together in the adjoining room to my scrapbook room and purged big time! It took me a total of 3 weeks, it seems over whelming but it is so worth it in the long run. Just focus on one thing at a time, take 15 minutes here and there and go thru a pile!
I used to come home from a crop and just leave my stuff in my crop bags and likely unpack and repack before the next crop! Now when I get home from a crop everything get put away the same day! Every thing has its place. I have scrapped more in my room in the last few months than in the 6 years I had my scrapbook room! Now I scrap, I don't spend time reorganizing items! | |

I am in the process of packing my stuff. Our new house will be finished in about a month. It has been overwhelming. It was not organized too well. I am trying to pack my stuff so as I'm unpacking I can organize my new(smaller) scraproom better. I think emptying your room and starting fresh is a great idea. That way you have to work at it! | |

to me,was worth the hassle, but I wasn't in any huge rush. Honestly, the hardest part is taking it all out...putting it back was easier, actually. I put it back slowly...over a period of a couple of weeks...I didn't break my back to get it all back in within a weekend or anything. I'm thinking about it again since it's been a couple of years, but a little bit at a time where I don't have to move it to another room completely, but maybe just the middle of the room. | |

I'm about to take everything out because I'm getting a new floor. I hope to try a new arrangement when I'm putting it back in...but I may end up with it in the same position. I recently reorganized my area (not lucky enough to have a room). But i makes finding stuff so much easier. I purchased clear shoe boxes from $1tree and organized my stamps, markers, inks, glitter glues, etc... For my small stuff I have one of those drawer thingies for the garage, you know what I mean with all of the little drawers for screws, nails, etc.... I have all of my stuff in cabinets. I have one for embellishments, die cuts, a couple with paper and cardstock, etc... I would suggest to organize it in a way that makes sense to you and easy for you to find stuff. | |

I did it when I decided that I wanted to move upstairs (from the basement where I had unlimited space.) I really wanted to be on the first floor. So, I took over what was our home office.
I bought banker's boxes when they were on sale at Office Max. I printed out large labels for them by category. That made it easy to pack and unpack. The boxes were a manageable size to carry upstairs. Plus, the contents of one box wasn't so big that it might seem overwhelming to unpack and arrange in its new home! And the boxes can be folded down (if need be) and reused for other projects.
I really don't remember how long it took. (I could compare it to labor....once it is over, you don't remember the pain! You can just admire your new baby.....I mean scraproom!) | |

I dragged it all out when I reorganized at the same time that Dancingfish (Vicki) did. The second week you had to decide if you were going to do small stuff or go for broke. I went for broke.
It was so worth it: it took a lot of time but it's not really difficult. It's been almost two years since then and I'm still glad I did it. My stash is still organized and easily available.

You don't even have to follow a group - you can do it at your own pace by following Wookie's blog. YES, IT WAS A LONG PROCESS. YES, WE DID NOT SCRAP MUCH DURING IT. YES, WE SPENT MONEY ON PLASTIC STORAGE THINGS. YES, WE ANNOYED OUR FAMILIES BY HAVING OUR sCRAP EVERYWHERE. YES, WE EMPTIED OUT OUR ROOMS AND FOUND STUFF WE HAD FORGOTTEN AND DECIDED WE COULD SELL/GIVEAWAY/PITCH THINGS....
But, what, Vicky - 1 1/2 years later?? my room is STILL ORGANIZED, HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL AND IT STAYS NEAT. Even with shopping and adding things, it is still in great shape. The process she takes you through is laborious - for a reason. You have to THINK ABOUT what you have/use/need to reach/want to see.

I sort of did this - I swapped rooms with my dd in January and stuff has to be organized and have a place in my room before it comes back in. So I still have some things in our dining room 
My new room is smaller than my old room so I have had to buy smaller furniture which is part of what is taking so long. But I'm really happy about getting it organized

I started to do this toward the end of last year. Ran out of time so I now have a big pile in my bedroom that needs to make its way back into my scraproom but my room is just as messy as it was before so nothing more is going in there!

I did this awhile back when I got my expedit. It was a huge chore. I put everything in the dining room which drove me crazy the second it was there which forced me to get it done quicker. I now have a semi-organized room ( I say that cause there are things that need to be better organized like stamps etc.) I am glad I did it though because I know where things are now and I actually use my room now! I should try wookies challenge too cause my paper still could be organized better and I could stand to do some purging. It's overwhelming but so worth it in the end! | |

I highly recommend doing it this way.
As a professional organizer, that is often how I worked with clients in reorganizing their spaces (every room of the house and offices). It enables several things:
1. You have a clean slate and can set up the space to be as efficient as possible.
2. It's easier to see new possibilities when you have an empty canvas.
3. You will know exactly what you have by the time you take it all out.
I would start by gathering some containers where you can sort. Have one for giveaways and one for trash for sure. Then, decide how you want to organize your items (by category, theme, color or manufacturer) and place like items together by those categories. These items can be sorted in the space and then taken out, or sorted once everything is out of the room. In either event, you'll be taking everything out first. Be sure to purge as you go so you are not moving items you don't want/need any more back and forth.
Then, think about the functionality of the room. What do you want to accomplish in the space (ex: make scrapbook pages vs. make cards)? What is most important to you (ex: stamping vs. sewing)? Be sure to set up the space to enable you to be productive and to do what's most important to you.
Think about furnishings and lighting as well as the functionality of the storage items. How do you want the room to look and feel? What kind of storage will you want in order to create that look and feel (ex: clear plastic vs. retro containers)? Does your storage need to be portable (if you often go to crops, this might be a consideration; if you have young kids, you might need containers that lock shut)?
Also, think about how you think when it comes to using your stash. Do you need to see it in order to recall you have it (are you an out of sight, out of mind kind of gal)? Or, do you prefer to have everything put away, out of sight and you have no trouble remembering what you have on hand? Store items in the way that works best for you.
Once you have the room set up the way you want it to be, start bringing those items you use every day back in and place them where you'll work. Be sure they are easily accessible.
Then, bring in the other items, little by little, again purging BEFORE you bring items back in. Remember, you have a Trash and a Giveaway box - use them!
I have moved and recreated my craft space several times in the last 5 years. Having things organized made the job so much easier as I could pack up and reset my space quickly. It was so worth the time spent making sure the room was not only functional and attractive, but that everything was easily accessible. I can recall pretty much everything I have and can easily find it.

This is the only way I can really get my head around sorting my space when it becomes too much - if I don't empty at least half the room, I just end up moving things around forever and never finding a home for everything.
Others have described their processes far better than I could, but my tips would be...
*start with a pretty much empty space outside your crafting area - no use mixing your crafting mess with your dining room mess, if that's a possibility. (of course not: your house is spotless. someday mine will be. sigh.)
*empty until there is nothing on the floor of your craft room and at least half your storage space is empty, so you have somewhere to 'start clean' as it were.
*grab post-it notes. start labelling the different areas in your space with what you want them to hold. think about putting the things you use most closest to your working spot, even if it's not the logical 'this fits' or 'this looks cutest' option. i keep all my stickers at exactly arm's reach from where i stand to scrap and it saves my sanity. i also put things i know i will use anyway behind me (but close) and things i need to be reminded to use in front of me, so i will see them and think 'oh... yeah. that.' if that makes sense?
*purge as you start to put things in the desired spot. if you labelled all the areas of your space, and it turns out you have more stickers than the spot marked 'stickers', then you have two options: take space from another category and reallocate it to stickers (so stamp space gets smaller, for example) OR purge your sticker collection until it fits.
*take pictures along the way so you can track your progress... if only for fun of the before and after!
*unless you have seriously taken on some sort of 'i will not buy stash' and you are sticking to it (good luck, but i couldn't do it, lol!) then do NOT fill any of your allocated spaces to the max. but... instead of purging more, if a category is a little over full, then you could just pull things out to a sort of scrapbook limbo: use it or lose it. then have a day or weekend of scrapping and try to use as much from the use it or lose it pile as you can. when you think you're good, take everything left in that category and put it in with your purged stuff and donate or gift or sell.
*i totally agree with the previous poster who said this is a project for when the DH is away, lol! if only he knew... (but really if your house isn't small maybe this isn't a problem - but our flat is little so if i empty my craft room the whole neighbourhood will probably know!)

We moved two weeks ago, so I was forced to do this. I used the empty bedroom next to my scraproom at the staging area and brought things in a few at a time. This helped so much!! It took me about 4 days to get things just right, but I am very happy with my room | |

I did this last summer. I took out everything. Cleaned, sorted, painted and totally redecorated my room. Then I started at one end and put everything(that I was keeping) back. I gave away a lot of stuff and took alot to the Salvation Army. I absolutley love my "beachy" scraproom.
In fact, I just got home yesterday from vacation in FL and have all kinds of new goodies to scrap with and to decorate with! | |

It really was totally worth it. I had to drag it all out anyway, since it was going into a different room, but once I did that, it was my daughter who set the room up and put everything away. I lived with that for a little while and that made me realize that I had to go through everything and move the furniture around, etc. THAT was when I really made progress. I have been through just about every single thing I own and it's all much more manageable now. I also put most of the stuff I use all the time within just a step or two of my scrap desk, especially most of the paper. Very helpful. I still need to put the paper away in a more logical fashion than it's in right now, but that's a small, manageable thing. The rest of the room is pretty under control and--best of all--I am USING my stuff and scrapbooking again. Yay!!
One thing I did that I don't recommend: I set up my expedit and filled it up, got it all organized, etc., and then I decided to repurpose these Ikea bins I was using for clean laundry. I brought them downstairs (they are in a wooden holder) and went to set them up in the space between the end of the expedit and the wall and...I needed about 1 or maybe 1.5 more inches. So, I had to pull most of the stuff BACK out of the Expedit and onto the floor, just so that I could shove the Expedit a tiny fraction to the left. Then I had to load it all up again. That was a little bit frustrating. But now it's done and I'm happy. | |

The worst part is that while I have a very large craft "area" (almost a room except it is half of my living room - is that I now have TONS of crap in my FOYER - gotta get off here and go finish! | |

My scrap space has been temporarily taken over with a remodel project.
Once I get my space back, I plan on doing this. My stuff is still on the shelves but just pushed back against the corner walls in the garage and covered with a very heavy tarp that is tied down. The few times I have been out there to retrieve stuff, I realized that my space was more "decorated" than "organized".
Since I don't have too much time to scrap lately - or space- I have been trying to redesign where I am going to put things once I get my space back. The layout is the best I can hope for with the amount of space I have so I went and measured everything and am drawing things to go where I can get to them easier to use them. I am trying to picture myself when I scrap, what I use most often besides paper of course and what has to be within easy reach.
The good thing about the remodel - besides the new kitchen I will eventually have, is that I have this time to actually go and organize some of my stuff in the meantime that I never had time to do. Such as ribbons. I love them and use them a lot, when I can get to them and see what I have. So this is my next project! | |

Oh my gosh Deja Vu! All of my scrapbook stuff ended up on the back porch covered by a tarp while remodeled Family room didn't know when we started it would take almost 6 months ( Murphys Law what can go wrong will go wrong) Happy to say remodel is finally complete. While putting everything away I PURGED. Had 4 of those plastic tubs full. My Son is a Volunteer Firefighter and they had an auction to raise money and donated all of it! I am so happy to be scrappin in my space instead of out of my tote at the kitchen table!! | |

Only 6 months, boy you are lucky!!! My boyfriend is remodeling the kitchen. It is not necessarily large, but he is building the cabinets himself, by himself. And, oh did I mention, he has never done this before? Kitchens that is, other things yes!
He officially started at the end of July last year. Between things we do and him working 60+ hours a week, well he almost has the top cabinets done! I never thought it was easy but I had no idea the pieces that go into each cabinet.
I have been working out of my XXL since August when I officially lost my space. I am so hoping to have my space back by at least July this year so I can take advantage of some summer time scrappin while my daughter is in camp! | |

That's exactly what I did. You can see pictures of it in my gallery. It was a perfect way to go through everything and only put back what I loved, and set up the furniture in a way that worked for me, too! | |

The last time I tried to do that, my DH came home 3 days early from his business trip. Never again! I was so p.o.ed. He never called or anything, just walked in the door, to a mess. I was like WTH are you doing? I had a least a day or two's work to do but had to pack it all up and put it away so we could have dinner - otherwise the kids and I were just going to use TV trays for a couple days and they were FINE with that while I got organized -
So yes, BTDT but apparently won't be able to do that again for some time now until he travels again.

I did this three weekends ago, and three weekends later not quite everything is back in the room. That is my project for this coming weekend, finish it up. I moved everything out because I wanted to rearrange the furniture. I am purging as I put things back,that's why it's taking me so long. | |

So glad I found this thread! I've been thinking about doing this because I've been watching Peter Walsh's show on Oprah's network, and that's how he organizes rooms.
I'm really surprised so many of you have done it. That rawks! Thanks for the inspiration.
Check out my scraproom in my gallery. You will see just how much stuff I had. I was buried in stuff but it was so organized, to me it didn't seem like much. I organized my stuff with the Wookie Challenge part I a few years ago.
Since then I pretty much quit scrapbooking because I found that I still had so many choices and it felt like that was what was inhibiting me. I decided I was happier when I had less stuff. In the meantime my daughter was ready for her own room. I decided to give her my scraproom as it had become the only room in the house that had an outdated purpose. It was still organized though.
I emptied the entire room and staged the sb stuff in another room in my house where I could get in and tackle it. Because it was so organized and labeled it wasn't that big of a job ok maybe it was just because of the volume. It could have been worse if I didn't already have it organized by the Wookie Challenge.
I ended up purging about 75% of what I owned. I consolodated the keepers and re-labeled everything but put it all in a underused closet. I am going to keep it there for six months to a year. If I don't scrap during that time I am going to get rid of the rest of it. If I do keep it, I have an area ready for it.
I read Peter Walsh's book "It's All Too Much". I realized that I was a scrapbook hoarder. He says in his book "Remember that owning the scrapbooking materials doesn't automatically make you a scrapbooker. Is it a source of pleasure and relaxation or one more stressful thing in your home that you just don't seem to get to?" That rang true for me.
We will see what happens. I am prepared to resume but I am also prepared to give it up. We'll see.

This is just how I feel....trapped in all my stuff (not anywhere near as organized as you though) and so I don't scrapbook.
I did buy that book so I need to read that to see where I'm going to go from here. | |

I did this a few years ago and it helped me decide how to best use the room. Now I scrap in the middle of the room and use the other tables along the wall as over spill from my desk. It works great. | |
