For this challenge, you'll be using the Patent Leather Effect Technique that Judi Watanabe demos in her video tutorial, Elegant Embossing. It's like magic.

You'll find details about the challenge in the Challenge Blog.

The sample card is in the gallery.

Please be sure to check the appropriate challenge box when you post your project so it will show up on the blog. After you post it, come back here and link your project if you can. Tell us how the technique went for you--good or bad!

If you have any questions about the challenge or the technique ask them here. It amazes me how much I learn each and every time from the participants who come up with ideas and solutions I never even thought about.

I hope you'll join in and have fun.
Daria

ETA: If you decide to ink your stamp like I did, little by little, don't use Brilliance Inks. They dry too fast. I used VersaColor and ColorBox Pigment Inks.

I could not get the video to play, but I tried this technique from the directions.

I messed it up and I think I know why. Ranger's Archival ink--is it a dye ink or a solvent?

I used the RA black ink and the first embossing stayed black. Might try again later. I've been sick, so my energy is low.

Ranger Archival Ink is a waterproof dye ink, so I don't think it will work for this technique. In fact, it might stick to the clear embossing from the first part ... and never come off.

Very unique idea for a challenge, Daria! I always like the techniques you come up with for challenges! Thanks for hosting!

Thanks for the info. It did stick. I tried again with Distress Ink, not great either. I guess I just don't have the best ink for this technique. C'est la vie.

Thanks, Anne, for answering the question about ink.

When I made my sample, I first used Brilliance inks which are pigment inks. By the time I'd carefully colored my stamp and stamped with it, the ink was too dry to emboss. I'm always forgetting that Brilliance is a fast-drying pigment. It might have worked just fine if I had done what Judi did in her demo--put the three inks on the stamp quickly and haphazardly. If anyone tries that, let us know how it worked.

Pottle, since you can't see the video, you might want to download the pdf Design Guide. You can click on it right below the video.

BTW, the Patent Leather Effect is the second project on the video.

Don't give up.

Just tried this and sort of got it to work! I have some black in the nooks and crannies which looks like a crackle finish, I guess this has to do with my EP more than the ink.

Laura, I noticed that Judi's card on the video also had some black on the image, and it's not as bright as it was. That's good because I didn't worry when mine turned out that way too. I think it adds character.

This is such an easy technique, and it looks pretty cool. I'm going to have to make another card now that I won't duplicate the problem of the disintegrating ink pad. I have never had anything like that happen before.

Is your piece a card yet?

just posted mine to the gallery

I think a different/thicker EP to use to emboss the yellow flower might have helped the black slide off better? I have clear UTEE, maybe that would work better. Anyway, it was fun to try and a technique I've never heard of before!

Laura, I don't think it's the EP. I used regular EP on mine. I think it might be the Brilliance Ink which doesn't act like a "real" pigment ink. It dries so fast. I used Color Box Pigment Ink. VersaColor should work too.

I'm visiting my sister today. When I get back, I'll check in and see if there's been any more action on this challenge. Heck, I think I'll do it again myself now that I have a good black ink pad that won't disintegrate all over the card. Hopefully, I can make a better sample for you to see.

Be sure to check out the video tutorial on the Challenge Blog where you can see Judi's patent leather purse card.

Hasta pronto.

Welcome home, Anna-Karin. I'm so glad you have the entire weekend to play. I also have it on good authority that there will be another challenge or two during Hangover Week.

Here's Jan's Card. It's in the blog for this challenge, but she linked it to the Embossed Resist Discussion Thread where she said

Daria-this was such a fun technique! Many thanks for sharing it in this challenge!

It's a terrific example and I love the additional flowers she added to brighten up the whole card.

For someone who has a lot of inks, I have surprisingly few pigment inks, especially in brighter colours. I used Colorbox inks to ink up my stamp. Then I went searching for a black pigment ink, and the only one I had was the Brillance one, which I didn't want to use since I was afraid it would dry too fast. Instead I used Colorbox black chalk ink, which worked, but it never covered my stamped image - so I didn't get to see it magically appear.

Here's my card:

WF11 Mary Jane card

Thank you for another awesome challenge Daria! I will try this technique again.

Here's my card. I used a Brilliance rainbow ink pad to ink up the stamp (I loved THAT look), but I had some problems with the black in part--my Brilliance black was nearly dried out, so I ended up using my black Versafine! I'm not completly happy with the results because I think the black toned down the pretty rainbow colors too much, but it's definitely a technique I'll try again! Flower card

Furry Pea, I love your embellishments! I'm already thinking about stamping a whole sheet ahead of time so it'll be ready to be punched out whenever I need it. Very cool idea!

Anna-Karin, I love your card! I had the same problem you had. I have tons of inks but very few pigment inks, and most of those are Brilliance. I did try the Brilliance, and it just dried too fast. That might be because it took me so long to ink up my stamp. I was happy when I found the unopened ColorBox Black Pigment ink--until it disintegrated. Fortunately, for some unknown reason, I had another unopened pad, and it worked fine. I'm happy to know that the Color Box Fluid Chalk Inks work too. Until I started seeing everyone's work for this challenge, I don't think I even knew that CBFC inks could be embossed!

Ann, I think your card turned out beautifully. I hadn't thought about using a reverse image stamp but love the way it turned out. I don't mind that the black ink changes the colors somewhat. I like the effect. However, like Brilliance, VersaFine inks dry very fast and that might be a part of the problem.

Thank you both for playing. You're sending me back to the drawing board to see what else works!

Okay ... so I was watching Judi Watanabe's Elegant Embossing video about the Patent Leather technique and my hubby saw it over my shoulder. Neither one of us thought it would work.........

But we were proved wrong! He was so curious, he came into the crafty room with me and watched when he heard the heat gun fire up. It is like magic!

Anne, that's so cute that your husband checked to see if the technique would work. It is like magic!

I feel the same way when I see Tim Holtz demo the technique where you make a custom inkpad for a specific stamp. The pad looks awful, but when he inks up the appropriate stamp and stamps it, there it is perfect and all colored in! Anna-Karin has done it too so I know it works. I still cannot believe it. I'll have to try it for myself.

I love your card. It is lovely.

I just posted the RAK's in the gallery. RAKs -- Prizes --RAKs --Prizes

Are you ready to find out who won?

I wrote your names on strips of paper, folded them in thirds and again in halves. I stuck them all in a hat and bounced them around. Then I went in and woke up my daughter and asked her to do the honors. She is used to this and didn't even open her eyes--just stuck her hand out and pulled out the name of the winner when I stuck the hat under her hand. Sheesh!

The winner is . . .
