interchangeably? Well at least the cricut mat cut in your silhouette. I just saw a youtube video from custom crops and she is using the 12x24 cricut mat.

What say the peas?

HOW is she using a 12" x24" mat in her Silhouette? Cuz in mine you can not cut anything 12 inches. The mat itself is only 7.5" wide for the Sil - and I can't get my Cricut mat in there.

I've cut the mats with a pair of kitchen shears or drywall knife to fit the width.

Well the Silhouette mat is actually 9 inches wide and the platform is actually 11 inches wide therefore she cut the mat to 11 inches and you can cut as long as 39 inches in the silhouette.

I have used the cricut mats for years. I buy the 12x24 with a coupon at J's, cut them down with scissors and masking tape the edges off. After the coupon and tax, I end up with 4 mats for about $2.25 or so each.

I never had any luck reconditioning my mats like others have done, it just never worked for me and was way too aggravating and messy.

I only buy Silhouette mats...I hate the idea of cutting down other mats..too much trouble and I don't want to support PC in any way. I have several thin material mats and rotate those. I've got thick material on order and will rotate those as well. In the future though I'm just going to buy thick material and use it for everything.

this lady that I know who owns a retreat house has a kink and kutz for us to use and she uses the cheap walmart place mats and temp adhesive spray all the time.

I have a Robo and a Cricut and it seems like the cricut mats are a lot thicker. I wouldn't do it because well WHY? Just buy the ones that fit already.

I wash my Cricut mats by hand and use a lint roller on my Robo mats. keeps them sticky a lot longer (even when the blades seem dull it's usually just the dirty mat!)

I will not use Cricut mats in my Silhouette. They do work in a pinch but the thickness of the mat makes the blade wear down faster and I noticed the blade kind of drags against the mat too.

I have been making mats since Wishblade days. I use quilter's templates.

This is what I used to do with my Wishblade. Glad to hear you can do it with the Silhouette, too!

I did make my own mats once using those flexible cutting board/mats. Taping & spraying them but that was a bit of work. I'm thinking I'll try it again since I'm trying not to buy PC products.

I only use Silhouette mats, I order them from robocraft, they're cheaper from there.

My Silhouette is new (only had it for a few weeks), but I doubt I would use Cricut mats either. The Cricut mats are so much thicker it seems to me that the blade would dull faster... and I too refuse to support PC.

I ask because I own at 10 mats and 3 of which are 12x24 and I see that Silhouette does not sell longer mats. Therefore

HOW do you cut a 39 inch in length design/vinyl?

Do you just place the vinyl without the mat?

You ladies have some awesome ideas on resurfacing the mats.

Ok so is this thin like the Silhouette mats, now I am concerned about abusing the machine and wearing out my blade.

For vinyl and heat transfer, you set the machine/software to "media only"...and then you can cut up to the 39" length...it took me AGES to figure that out. I don't have my Sil SD with me at the moment, but I believe there is a button (right arrow, maybe) that when you push it it goes from "Load Carrier" to "Select Language" to "Unload Media" to "Media Only" (Total guess on this order...and what they are called) In the Studio Software, when you change the cut settings, choose Silhouette Vinyl (for example) and make sure the "Carrier Sheet" option is NOT checked...but be sure after you finish cutting the vinyl and you go back to cutting paper, make sure the machine is reset to say "Load Carrier" (Otherwise you will spend ages trying to figure out why things aren't cutting on the mat correctly (Again...it took me AGES to figure that out!) I hope this helps...

I bought (package of 3) stencil sheets in the size of 9 1/2w by 18h inches from Hobby Lobby for $2.47, and a can of Krylon Re-positonal adhesive. I then used a sharpie marker to draw/trace my lines from my original mat, sprayed the adhesive and taped down the sides with masking tape and bam, brand new mats that cuts in length up to 18 inches.

I make my mats the same way Design Chick does. It works great. I also like this because you can make your own customize mats in various lengths.
