A very big thank you for everone who did my challenge! It was fun seeing all the different versions of the technique. I will definitely do more shadow and overstamping in the future.

I wrote down all the entries on pieces of paper, folded them, placed them in a bowl and let Anton draw the winner. He was quite reluctant to let go of the paper he had picked, but once I got hold of it, I could see that the winner of my challenge is:

Anne (prospurring), with this gorgeous card:

Anne's Leaves and Lace card

Congrats Anne! Since Two Peas is having a fun stamp sale, my RAK is a $15 gift certificate.

Thanks again for playing!

Welcome to my WSW11 Layers of Ink Challenge!!

I wanted to do a technique challenge and my challenge is to do overstamping, also called shadow stamping. This technique is a great way to add dimension, depth and texture to a project and to get more out of your stamps. For ideas and suggestions see my challenge blog post here:

WSW11 Layers of Ink Challenge

Links to sample cards:

Sample cards 1a and 1b

Sample card 2

Sample card 3

Challenge guidelines:
1. Make a new card of any size, an ATC, a layout or any other project, using stamping and the technique of overstamping/shadow stamping.
2. Post your piece in the stamping gallery, and click the checkbox for 'WSW11 Layers of Ink Challenge'
3. Please share your experiences with the technique,so that we can all learn.
4. You can combine this challenge with other WSW challenges and you may enter as many times you like.
5. It is always fun if you link your piece to the discussion thread about this challenge. Also, if you have any comments or questions, please leave them on that thread too.
6. The challenge runs between 11 June and 19 June 2011.

This is a technique I've wanted to try out more, and I am really looking forward to seeing what everone will create. A big thank you to Jan for helping me out with the challenge title.

Have fun!!

Great challenge & love the samples--nice diversity.

Gotta question... Did you do any masking or just layer your inks?

Thanks everyone! I am so looking foward to seeing what you'll create.

Daniel, I didn't do any masking, I just restamped either straight on top of, or a bit off-centre, to the original image. If you'd, for example, only want the second impression to be on a part of the original image, I am sure some masking could give interesting results too.

I gave this a try by stamping with both blue and purple markers on the tree and the shells. I am not sure I like how the shells came out, this was my third try on the card though. (I've combined this with two other challenges.)

Beautiful samples, I thouht the white flower on the second card was a die cut at first, so you really get dimension with this technique. Just wondering, could you stamp the Versamark first and then stamp the main image second? Have no white ink, but do have white paint...

Great card Ellen! Thanks for playing!

Craftydolls, you can use paint instead, it gives a somewhat more distressed look. I used paint and Versamark on the background of sample card 3. Or try another ink, it doesn't have to be white. I just happened to do those sample cards with white.

I didn't think about stamping the Versamark first. With dye inks, it will probably resist the second image, which will give a different, but also cool result. With paint, it shouldn't make much of a difference which comes first. But if you do emboss the Versamark, the paint might not stick as well to that. Let us know how it goes if you try it out!

I tried my hand at the layers of ink-only did two layers but that's a start! Sorry for the slightly blurry photo, scanners don't like lumpy things.
card

I first stamped in black ink and then followed with brown ink.
What I used:
J's studio 112 clear mini stamp
Technique Tuesday Old World squares stamps (fleur de lis, diamonds)
Fancy Pants stamp

Versamark watermark ink

Here is my offering - details of how I did the card are posted in the gallery.

This was a definate challege for me and it was not easy, but fortunately the stamping angel was with me to keep me going and to whisper in my ear that it would work.

Hope you like it.

I loved working on the glossy cardstock with the Brilliance inks.

On this challenge I started with the aqua frame that I had from a cut and emboss folder. I used aqua pigment ink first to stamp the flowers and then purple on top. The stamp is from Stampabilities -- Floral Silhouette 2. I dressed the card up with a lace bow and pearls. Thanks for the fun challenge. I haven't used this technique in a long time.

Thanks Anna-Karin for a terrific challenge!

Let me say it again...Beautiful card Ann AND congratualations winner!!!

&&&&&&&&&
Ann/lickyan asked how I made the cards for this challenge.

I followed Anna-Karin's final suggestion for layering techniques:
Ink up a stamp with different colours dye ink, mist with water and stamp. Clean the stamp and ink only parts of it with a darker colour ink. Restamp, taking care to stamp precisely on top of the first impression.
