I usually do things in the same order that you do.
But.... when I use the Super Saver Sketch Kit I put the sketch together and then go and find pictures to fit. I have been amazed at how freeing this can be at times.

1. pictures
2. sketch
3. paper
This is usually how I approach the process too. I may exchange photos with one I originally weeded out if another one fits better...

Sketch, paper, photos.
I am trying to utilize each of the sketches. I glance through the photos ahead of time to find the general theme or colors but I don't actually pick the ones I am going to use until the end.
I just make the photos work with the particular sketch I am using either by adding, subtracting or cropping the photos to fit. I am loving making each of the sketches. Even when I am using one with 10 photos and say, only have 4 or 5.
I feel I am learning new ways to do things this way and making the most of the sketches. |

Pictures/sketch/paper.
I have a story in my mind and I grab the photos that will sufficiently "tell" the story, then I go to a sketch that will work for that number photos and then I use the paper suggestions on the sketch, along with the theme/colors in the photos, to drive what paper I use.

The great thing about the sketches is I can do the process in any order, depending on my focus that day.
Need a mojo boost, go with a sketch that inspires me first. A story to tell, go with my photos first. Challenging myself to use particular papers in my stash, go with papers first. Except for using my stash, I generally choose papers last.

I too find I can do these in different order depending on the day!
I might see a sketch and think "Oh, I want to try that" and find pictures/paper to suit. I actually used a pagemaps sketch this way last night. It was one small photo (2.5x3.5, which is small for me) on a 1-page LO which was something I'd never done. LOVE how it turned out. (I'm usually a 2-page, many photos scrapper.)
I might grab a batch of photos and start there just like Penny.
I might be inspired by some paper and move forward from that point.

sketch, paper, then pictures
If the pictures don't match the paper very well, I just change them to black & white.

I'm in the class, too, and have to listen to the presentations again, but I think Allison said she starts with the sketch and can adjust photos from there. Interesting, I usually start with photos and go in search of a sketch, but she said her way can save lots of time. I'm all for that! |

I have started with the sketch since day 1 when I started using them. It seemed the least stressful to me.
Everything seems to fall into place quite easily. |

I choose the pictures, then find coordinating paper, then choose a sketch (I have my sketches organized by # of photos-so if I have 6 pictures, I look under my sketches for 6 photos)
ETA-when I'm doing a sketch challenge I have the sketch first, then photos and then paper |

My order is sketch, photos, and then paper.
The main reason I got started with using the sketch first was when I began Sketch Week on my blog. It was just so much easier for me to adjust a sketch to fit five sets of photos instead of finding five sets of photos that fit the same sketch. Now sketch, photos, and paper is my order for every layout, even when it's just one sketch and one set of photos. I figure I can always adjust the sketch to make it work with the photos I want to use.
I know it kind of sounds backwards if you've never tried it that way but I have found that it really works for me. However, what might be a big time saver for me could be a pain in the you-know-what for someone else.

photos
sketch
paper
I usually pick out the photos I think I'll use look for the sketch and then add or subtract photos to fit the sketch.
I can see that picking the sketch first might be easier/faster because I end up looking through all of my sketch books (6 or 7 don't remember how many) narrowing it down to a few and then picking one. Know I waste a ton of time looking through sketches to find one. May have to try that. |

I do the same order pictures, sketch, paper. Occasionally it will be tweaked if I can't find a sketch to exactly match my pictures and sometimes I know exactly what patterned paper I'm going to use, like right now I'm doing some outside water pictures and I won a Splash paper pack from Echo Park on Facebook so I knew ahead of time I would be using that paper. |

I love the options you have when using sketches because when using them; the base is already done. Therefore you can be inspired to use anything as a jumping off point. In saying that, I usually start with the photos then I choose my scrap kit to coordinate.
I took the plunge and bought all of Allison Davis's sketch books and am so, so glad I did. I've scrapped more pages in less time without compromising my style. I could not be more thrilled
Now I've pre-ordered the 2 newest books - Vol. 8 and her first book that focuses on 1 pg LOs. I'm so anxious to get those at home.

Wow... these back-to-back posts produced an AH-HA moment for me! (well, maybe a bit of a "duh, why didn't I ever think of it that way" moment, but still. )
I have so many beautiful layouts bookmarked and sketches saved that I've never lifted/used, because I never have "the right photos." And I ALWAYS start with the photos. I never thought, or was never inspired, to switch it around go FIND a photo(s) to suit the source of inspiration (be it a sketch or a bookmark...). I can't wait to try this out and finally bring to life some of the inspirations I've had just sitting around for way too long!
Thank you Peas!!! | |

but more specifically i agree with this:
I usually pick out the photos I think I'll use look for the sketch and then add or subtract photos to fit the sketch.
however, mickeygirl makes a lot of sense:
I can see that picking the sketch first might be easier/faster because I end up looking through all of my sketch books (6 or 7 don't remember how many) narrowing it down to a few and then picking one. Know I waste a ton of time looking through sketches to find one. May have to try that.

Most of the time I was trying to find photos in the same orientation as the sketch.
This is why I go photos then sketch. I get those narrow white margins on my photos, so I don't really like to have to cut them down....I know - kinda' cumbersome - but I love my little white margins and my "pre-matted" photos.
Interesting to read everyone's take.
I do think it is good to switch the order around every once in awhile just to keep it interesting.

I always did photos, paper, sketch and just could NOT get the hang of using sketches.
I took Allison's class, did it her way (sketch, photos, paper) and suddenly sketches made sense (I think angels actually sang!). I've been doing it this way for several months now and I'm so productive!

photos/sketch/paper
BUT I have been doing sketch first since following the '4x6 love' and 'stretch your sketch' classes and it works like a charm! Bit of a challenge at first, but now inspiration for which photos to use hits immediatedly.

It depends on the day ...
Usually, it's pictures/sketch/paper. As I'm mostly inspired by the pictures/story I want to tell.
But when I come back with a new stash, it's usually paper/pictures/sketch as I'm dying to cut into some new pretty paper
