I have strep throat and hurt a lot. I hate gargling, but I have been doing it with salt water. My mother swears by gargling with hydrogen peroxide when a person has strep. As a chemistry teacher, I just can't bring myself to do it. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

My mom always says to do that when I have a sore throat. It tastes horrible and I can't really say if it helps or not.

Many, many times when I used to have terrible bouts with tonsillitis. It helped.

It should say it right on the bottle. I know I've read on there that you can use it as a mouthwash.

I swish with this peroxide stuff when I have an inflamed wisdom tooth. It's mint flavored though. It's called Peroxyl.

I tend to get clusters of canker sores on the back of my throat - it tastes absolutely horrid, but it really helps.

My mom swears by this too. When I used to complain about a sore throat- "Did you gargle with hydrogen peroxide?"

As a Biology teacher I will tell you your body naturally produces hydrogen peroxide as part of its biochemistry. You don't want to swallow it, but gargling is OK.

You could put some potassium permanganate in your sink and then clean it up when you are done.

A doctor I saw when I had strep throat told me that he gargles every day with a 50/50 mix of hydrogen peroxide and Listerine. I have been doing the same thing for the last couple of years and so far, so good.

Someone I work with says her dentist recommended the same thing.

My DH used to do that when he used to get strep. Thankfully, I never got the strep from him. Hope you feel better soon.

I think sometimes my mom uses hydrogen peroxide for everything.

My mom had my sister and I gargle with peroxide when he had sore throats when we were kids.

I dont remember if it worked or not, just remember learning real quick not to swallow it!

Nicole, I just ran out of potassium permanganate last week! As fellow science teachers I think you and I would get along very well.

Wow, I am surprised that others have heard of this as well. I have a fear of accidentally swallowing some. I am not a very adept gargler. (Is that a word?)

I have never "gargled" hydrogen peroxide, but I swish it in my mouth to help whiten my teeth. It doesn't have any taste to me at all.

OP hope you feel better soon.

My orthodontist had me mix Johnsons' baby shampoo and Hydrogen Peroxide to brush with. Tasted horrid, but still, I'm sure I swallowed some over the years I had braces. What are the repercussions of swallowing H2O2?

I have rinsed my mouth out with peroxide and water after having my teeth cleaned so they wouldn't be sore. I gargle with Liquid Bendryl
for sore throat, one dr said to mix a little maloxx with it. It helps!

I have gargled with a 50/50 mixture with water, to help get rid of thrush. Taste not so great, but it works.

Don't vets give hydrogen peroxide to dogs to make them throw up if they ate something they shouldn't? I would think that might be the worst that could happen as long as you were not swallowing large amounts on a regular basis.

We do it at the first sign of illness. I also swipe hp-dipped q-tips in my ears. Doing the combination at the first sign of sickness has cut down on our illness a lot!

boy I wish I would of read this two weeks ago when I had a strep throat from h@ll!! The worse sore throat pain I can ever remember in my life. Felt like razor blades I could not even swallow my own saliva, it was so swollen.

Could not take motrin due to pregancy so I had to tough it out! I swore when the pain subsided I was going to schedule surgery to have my tonsils removed no.matter.what.
