The mailman's been coming later and later. We used to get our mail around 2pm several years ago. Then it was 3. Then it was 4. In the last year, it's arrived between 5 and 7 pm. In the winter, that means I'm getting the mail in the dark.

One way I can usually gauge, is that the other side of the street receives it's mail approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hours before our side of the street. If I notice that side getting their mail, I know when to check.

Today, I saw the mail truck as I drove to an appointment. It was delivering the mail across the street at around 4:30 pm.

So, at 6, I went out for the mail. nope.

At 7, I went out for the mail. nope.

Just came in from checking the mailbox, it's almost 9 pm. Can they just skip us? We had 5 items in our mailbox to go out -- 4 of them checks, and 1 a netflix video.

I brought them in, as I don't want to leave checks and videos in our mailbox overnight.

But, WTF? We're in city limits, mail service is constant. How is it that today, they just don't come??

What is our recourse? We usually don't send much mail, but we had fire insurance and earthquake insurance due, and they really needed to go out today.

Oh yeah, they can skip you if they want.

Years ago, I had a piece of mail to go out. Nothing very important, just a card to send in to BMG Music Club, but it stayed attached to my mailbox for three days. I finally called the PO and asked why the mailman wasn't picking up my mail that I had for pick up.

The postmaster told me that if the mailman didn't have any mail to be put in my mailbox, then it was up to the mailman if he wanted to stop and pick it up. That he was not required to pick up mail if there was none to be delivered. So I ended up having to take it the PO myself.

Btw, some mailmen who happened to see that one has mail to be picked up, will pick it up whether you have any mail going to you or not.

Don't worry about the people in your past; there's a reason why they didn't make it to your future.

They aren't supposed to skip you. But if you don't tell the post office there is a problem you can bet the delivery person isn't saying anything.

I never leave anything in my box for pick up. I take it to the post office.

I take everything to the post office. I would never leave outgoing mail, esp. checks and things with account numbers on them in an unlocked mailbox. Just not worth it. Drive thru the post office and drop it off.

oh, there's always mail to be delivered, I receive heaps of junk mail every day. As do my neighbors. Today, we should have all received the "Pennysaver". Which I don't want. But the pick up was much more important to me than whatever I would have received.

If they don't have mail to deliver, they don't come to your house. This happened to me last Thursday. I put mail out in morning and it was there at the end of the day. It went on Friday instead. It's RARE we don't get mail, so I was surprised. If it really HAD to go out on Thursday, I would have taken it to the PO or a neighborhood box, because they have no reason to walk up my front walk to my house if they have no mail for me. I think it's a great courtesy that they pick it up, making their load a little heavier.

I don't know why you think you have recourse. What exactly would you expect? I think you could call and see if they have a policy, but are you expecting something? I can't even imagine being the poor postal worker who has to work late into the evening to finish my routes. And it may be a sub. When ours shows up very late in the day, it's a sub who often does not know the route well. They have to work until they are done, no matter how long it takes (I asked once)

As for the things due, I suggest you call and make a check payment or credit card payment over the phone if they have no grace period.

My point is that I think the mailperson just ran out of time, and skipped our side of the street. There is never a day that at least junkmail does not arrive. I've lived here for years, and never, not one day in the last 15 years, has there been nothing in my mailbox.

All I know is we didn't receive mail last Wed. On Thur there were 2 'batches' of mail in the box. Don't know what caused the problem but it was annoying to go repeatedly down to the road and have the mailbox always be empty.

We used to have a mailman who took Mondays off. I know he did because I never saw him and then we weould have 2 batches of mail together in the box Tuesday.

I don't know what to do in your case, but one thing I WOULD do is NOT put outgoing mail in the box. Again, the times have changed, and sad to say, it's not safe to put things like checks and stuff in your outgoing box anymore. Drop off at the P.O.

I always mail out checks, letters, etc. in our mailbox. I haven't had a problem in 30+ years with it being picked up, lost, or stolen. There have been times where the mailmain hasn't come for whatever reason. At one point in time there was construction on our street, and the construction vehicles were parked in front of our box. So the mailman didn't bother to deliver those days. On other occassions, I don't know why he chose not to stop. It happens rarely, though. And like you've mentioned, OP, our delivery scheduled has gotten later and later over time; but I've never had to go out past 6 pm to get the mail. Maybe the P.O. in your area has made cutbacks and your driver has taken on another route on top of his???

I'd contact the postmaster. When Dad was a mail carrier, they could NOT skip houses/offices. When they had a day off, they had a sub to run the route. They couldn't just skip out.

In this day and age, I wouldn't leave any outgoing checks or items with important numbers in the box unless it was locked (like cluster boxes).

Does your box have a red flag to put up when you have outgoing mail? That's the only way my outgoing mail gets picked up if I have nothing to be delivered.

Not sure what you want to have happen at this point? You can't change the past so just figure out what you need to do now. Calling the post office won't fix your problem. It is what it is. Move on.
