Hi all,

We're putting on a new roof and then changing the color of the siding/trim. The brick is not that attractive, but I don't really want to paint over it. What colors would you suggest? I'm leaning toward a roof with dark grey/not quite black and some sort of a neutral siding that I can pull from the brick. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I like the brick. I agree - dark grey for the roof - maybe a light grey for the siding or a medium (not too dark) tan color. Light yellow siding my look good too but I'd probably get tired of a light yellow color faster then I would a light grey or tan color.

What part of the country do you live in? Light color roofing helps to reflect heat and dark roofing can draw it in. At least that is what I have always heard.

What colors are in your brick? Can you post a close up picture of it?

I would go with a lighter roof color. Maybe a taupe color
or something leaning more toward a warmer pale brown. I think
a dark roof color may make the house look smaller and I think
charcoal or black roofing is too harsh looking. If you choose
a brown family, I wouldn't go for anything too dark or red or
it will have the same effect as a black roof.

Siding-something in the warm neutral family. A dark cream color,
light khaki. Not white.

I hate making decisions like that.

Edited: I looked at the house again, is the brick gray? since
you are not changing the brick, match to that. If it's gray, taupe
will blend in, but disregard the brown ideas, cause with gray,
that would not work.

We live in the Midwest. The heat is a consideration. It's been a very hot summer. Right now the roof is nearly all black. I assume it started out a true black and faded over time. I want to stay dark enough that there is a contrast between the roof and siding.

Trust me, the brick looks much better in the photo than it does in person! It's mostly a whitish color, and then where it's chipping in corners and the edges, it's red. It almost looks like someone tried to paint or stain them and wasn't successful, but dh says that's just the way the brick was made.

I would lean toward a beige/taupe color, because I think it pulls more from the brick but A. I don't know if I could still do a grey roof (don't want to do brown) and B. Everyone around here paints their house beige!

I'd go with a black roof and pale yellow siding and then I'd paint the front door black.

Okay fine, I'll probably never skinny dip, but I'm having fun in smaller swimsuits!

Thanks Keri. My next door neighbors have a pale yellow house, so I was trying to avoid that. I also considered white, but my other next door neighbor and 5 others on my short court have white.

My next door neighbour had brick on the bottom of his house, siding on the top. He recently had all new siding put on, and they put that right over the brick. It looks way better as his brick was this ugly dated red brick.

I like a cream coloured siding as opposed to stark white.

We had our roof done a few years ago, and one of the shingle colours was a greyish colour mixed with taupe. We did not choose that colour but I have seen other homes with it and it looks really nice.

How about barn red for the siding then?

I don't know if I'm brave enough for Barn Red Keri With my luck it would go on a shade of magenta or something lovely like that! Thanks for the ideas though!

And I definitely don't think dh would go for it. It took me forever to convince him to paint our walls anything other than a shade of white. It needs to be baby steps with him. I am thinking about going with a barn red door though The front door is currently a dark red color. (Painted after this photo was taken)

I would go with a black roof and white siding. Or a dark gray roof with white siding.

Based on the photo, I like the unusual, whitewashed brick! My suggestion is medium grey siding (dark enough to still contrast with the white trim after it fades) & a charcoal/dark grey roof. Your red front door will make a dramatic statement (or you could paint the front door charcoal to coordinate with/balance the roof, if you prefer neutral). Your home will appear sophisticated & distinquished from your neighbors' matching white homes!

I like your brick. Isn't the day before installation a little late to be choosing the color? Do they just roll up with a truck full of choices? It seems like you'd need to give them a couple of weeks notice to order and prep the right colors.

Can you get some samples of the siding and roofing that you like and hold them up to the brick or tape them up with duct tape so that the brick is in between and you can step back and see how the different colors play with each other? You might even take pictures of the different color combinations so that you can look at it on the computer. Sometimes it helps me more to see it in pictures than actually looking at it in person. I know, I'm weird. lol

Pennyring, I know it sound very last minute. They have a good idea of which roof. I have it narrowed down to 2 shingle choices and the siding will be later. They are coming to tear off the old shingles tomorrow and install on Tuesday. Of course, they were supposed to drop off samples yesterday and didn't, so who knows if they will start tomorrow. They were supposed to start on Friday. I would be honestly worried at this point, but they come highly reccomended from two trusted friends, so I'm hoping they are just experiencing a slight blip...

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have to go volunteer at my son's school for the afternoon, but keep the suggestions coming and I'll check when I get back! Thanks!

I would go a dark grey roof, and the siding a dark steel grey. White trim.
Please don't go white!! with that brick, and I now exactly what it looks like, that just makes the brick stand out more.

I have light colored brick with lots of white/grey/tan/terra cotta coloring in it. We pulled a color from the brick for our siding and trim. For the roof we went with a neutral brown color. Here is the before (hope it works)
and the after:

The siding color is Sherwin Williams: Virtual Taupe SW7039
The trim color is Sherwin Williams: Tony Taupe SW7038
and the shutters are Sherwin Williams (maybe Duron) Tudor House
