Hi All,
I used to make my cricut and silhouette mats sticky with Krylon Reposition spray but the last 3 or 4 cans did not make the mats sticky. It is like they changed the formula. I bought them at different times at different stores, so I don't think it was just a bad batch.
So then I tried Scotch Spray mount repositional adhesive. the paper stuck to the mat but when I pulled up the paper there was glue residue covering all the paper.
So next I tried Loctite Spray adhesive general performance light. When I sprayed my mat the glue came out like silly string.
What do you all you?
TIA,
Katie | |

I use the Aileen's brand Tack it over and over. I just put a couple of drops on the mat and brush it around with a wet brush. It works so good. Just right , and the stickyness lasts many uses. Just don't put too many drops of glue. |

I've done a couple of things.
First, if I'm in a hurry and don't have time to let the mat dry, I use the Hermafix dotto temporary adhesive. However, that's a pricey solution, and not one I recommend unless you've got to cut something right away and can't wait.
Second option: use the Zig Glue pen with the wide tip. Apply it evenly all over the mat, avoiding where the rollers have to go. Let it dry overnight in an area that is as dust-free as possible. It makes the mat as tacky as when the mat is new, so you'll have to "condition" the mat by lightly wiping with a t-shirt or pressing your hands down on it all over, just as if it were brand new.
Third possibility is to water down the Aleene's Tack-It-Over-and-Over. I can't remember the proportions, but I think it's one part Aleene's to one part water. Apply with a foam brush. I haven't tried this one, but I plan to next time. I've heard there are videos on YouTube showing about it. Like the Zig, you probably want to let it dry overnight and condition the mat before using.

yes the aleens is the best!!I have done one mat that was so worn it had deep lines carved in it I did do the aleens before I tossed it and it works so well that the mat is now 6 mos and still sticky..just keep in mind that you will have a very sticky surface and it will tear light weight papers. try putting your hands all over the matte before using to get the sticky less tacky kwim..it's great to save money!!linda |

I have been using the spray for quilters--it is a basting spray. It seems to be just sticky enough to hold. It last a couple months before needing a re-spray. |

I used to use baby wipes with my cricut in the past to both clean and help with the stickiness.
Has anyone tried it with the Silhouette mats??? I'm curious to know if that works at least to clean the mat or will it remove the adhesive??

It may sounds crazy but this works for me. I wash my mat with dish detergent and a scrub pad. Then I tilt it to run the water off and let it air dry. Try it. I haven't had to buy any mats for my baby cricut for a year.

First i use a baby wipe and scrub the mat, that usually fixes it. If it doesn't I use adhesive. I've tried the zig two way glue pen (big one), I've tried the Stick N Spray and I've tried alene's tack it over and over. The first works ok but is too sticky, the second works great the first few times and then looses its stickiness and the third works FABULOUS! but you have to water down the glue before you do it, that's important. |

Darn, that Alene's Tack It Over And Over is good stuff! I didn't know it could be used for stickifying mats. I use it to make glue dots, and I love being able to make them whatever size I want, from big buttons to tiny rhinestones.
I'll try it with my mat, which is already over a year old. Thanks, Peas!

I use painters tape. Seriously.
I simply put my paper on the mat, secure it with a small piece of painters tape in all 4 corners. Then I move the cricut blade up so it doesn't try to cut over the tape. Works great. |

A question: Before you restickify mats, does the leftover stickiness on them have to be removed first? (Washed and/or scraped?) Or do you Peas just add new stickiness to the mat without preparing it in any way?

I do this also but, I only let it dry about 5-10 mins.. that stuff dries fast, when it isn't blue anymore it is dry and I have never had an issue. |

I just wash it with warm water & Dawn dishsoap...that's it! So far, I've done it about 4 or 5 times. I don't know how long I'll be able to get away with that, but I have 3 mats & rotate them - so far, so good!
ETA: I should mention that I've only had my E for a year, so the mats are only that old... |

I tried the Krylon spray with my last Silhouette mat and it didn't work at all so I just bought new mats. I have, however, used the Zig glue pen on my old Cricut mat and that worked so well that I used the same mat forever! I've never heard of the Aleene's method so I will definitely be giving that one a try on this next mat. |

Dish soap and a scrubber brush are what I use as well. Rinse well and let dry overnight. It's worked like a charm every time for me! |

Yesterday I tried Alene's "Tack It Over & Over" and can attest that it works splendiferously! Actually, I thought I'd added too much water as it seemed very watery, but I left it to dry for 24 hours and it works perfectly fine!
I didn't clean the mat beforehand, just painted the goop on with a foam brush. I'll see how this goes for a few months, then will try cleaning the mat next time to see if there's any difference.

Gosh, I was just looking for this thread last night when I "Alened" my mats--I couldn't remember if one was supposed to let the mat dry overnight, or what...being hurried, I just waited until it looked dry & went with it, no problem. Love getting extra use from materials, love the helpful tips from the peas!

I use my cricut everyday the last 6 months and has only used 2 mats alternately. I bought a couple of mats when they were on sale for $5 at cricutmachine but haven't used them since the Aleene's Tack it over and over works great! (less than $3 with coupon at M's).. I have to re stick them 2x a month and remove the residue with 'Goo Gone' once a month, i found a 2" flat scrapper at 99cents store..
I use 1:1 tbsp ratio of Aleenes and water. I let it dry under a ceiling fan for an hr but mostly do it before going to bed..
I did try using Zig glue pen and works too, but 1 Aleene's bottle could last you for yrs! So now, im saving my Zig pen for paper piecing cuts.
I ziplock everything (Aleenes, foam brush, plastic container, plastic spoon, scrapper and goo gone) under the sink and ready when i need them..
I found the video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QUfPpiw1kU

I have tried almost every method mentioned here and they all work pretty well, however I found a method that works best for me.
I clean my mat using brake cleaner and it turns out like brand new! Here is a you tube video that demonstrates it. It only takes about 5 minutes. No more scrubbing and washing!
Brake cleaner method
Then I resticky my mat with my xyron refill. I just cut 3 pieces to place on my mat to completely cover it. It lasts forever and is so easy. It only took about 1 minute to do.

I don't bother cleaning it really...but I don't get it really dirty...I use the SLICE stuff and its little foam applicator. Takes about five minutes to dry and works great! I'm able to use coupons for it at J's and HL, I think. |

An update to my last post: If you use "Tack It Over & Over," be sure not to leave any puddles of it during spreading. Even though I left the mat to dry for 24 hours, this weekend I almost couldn't remove the plastic cover because it stuck a little TOO WELL in one part where the glue went on too thick instead of being spread thoroughly. Yikes!
BTW, this was the original mat that came with my Baby Bug that I bought in March 2008!

Good timing! I was about to toss a couple of mats but DH just went to find his brake degreaser stuff for me and a putty knife thing so tomorrow I will try this! I have spray adhesive but it sounds like the ailene's goo works better.

I also use the Zig 2 way and it works great, is quick, no mess and inexpensive! I agree about using baby wipes-- I scrape off all the paper bits- and then clean with a baby wipe. I use my cricut a lot- and the cleaning with the baby wipe really extends the stickiness!

For those of you that use baby wipes.....you scrape off the extra bits of paper, then just wipe down the mats w/ wipes?? it doesn't remove the stickiness and you are good to go once again?? hmmmm....
