We are stumped about what to get for our 12 year old nephew. He is really into video games, but we don't want to give any this year (we have done it in the past, but he and his brother already play a lot of video games so we'd like to go in another direction.) Right now the only thing we can think of is an itunes gift card, but I'd love to get an actual gift (vs. gift card) if we can think of something cool.
My kids are a lot younger so I don't know what 12 year old boys are into these days! Help? Thanks!

What about something for outside? A new scooter? Rip-stick? Unicycle? My DS was only 10 last Christmas, but he loved the Pogo stick I got and Stilts too. HearthSong catalog makes some good quality outdoor toys.

DS is 12 and asked for Xbox which I understand not wanting to support. He also asked for: rip stick, air soft gun, new nerf guns just out this season, docking station, books on his kindle and Harry Potter movies.

Does he have Legos? There was a Lego book of ideas on Amazon's toy deal we got for my nephew - looks like great fun, and doesn't seem to only use the really expensive themed pieces.

My 12yo has never been into Legos (motor skill issues) but has only enjoyed the figures. He would be polite and say thanks but it wouldn't be a hit gift. My younger son is a Lego fanatic!
My 12yo & his friends are really into Nerf guns right now. At his birthday sleepover they all planned ahead and brought their Nerf guns.
Another fad he & his friends are into are the braided titanium necklaces. They're not cheap so it's not something he would buy himself because he's very frugal w/his money.
I don't know your budget but DS loves his flip video recorder that was given to him for his birthday. Oh I just reread your post & realized the gift is for your nephew so that may be too much $$. Sometimes Amazon has a deal though.
DS enjoys music so last year he was excited to get a CD alarm clock w/a Bon Jovi CD.
Snap Circuits may be a hit if he's into circuitry, creating doorbells, alarms, etc. It was more of hit w/my younger son because he definitely has more of an engineering mind.
DS is an avid sports fan so a hoodie for his favorite college or NFL team is always a hit. Right now he likes American Eagle & Aeropostale hoodies and actually added an AE hoodie to his Christmas list. He only gave us 4 ideas.

VERY cool and they carry stuff for kids who are artistic all the way through items for kids that are budding engineers. For preschoolers all the way through high school/adult.
For example, what about a baking soda and vinegar powered rocket or car that you can launch? here That's just one example.

my soon to be 12 year old nephew loves Beyblades and asked for a new stadium.
Also second the Myth Busters items.
Not sure if he's into real sports or music but lessons in either would be good.

Lego, K'nex, Itunes, a sweatshirt from the college that his folks went to? Ds loves the sweatshirt that I bought dh a few years ago. I had to buy a new one for dh.

I love the idea of a digital camera.
You can get him a cheapie one he can call his own. He'd love the freedom and would probably use it a lot.

I have an 11yo boy and I second the Mythbusters stuff. My son loves that. He loves electronics over everything else, but my sister started him on some coin collecting and he LOVES that.

forgot to mention that sports cards are a huge hit too. Like going to a card shop and get his favorite players in a jersey card. Got my son a Ben Roth. (Steelers) jersey card for his birthday...lets just say I was his favorite person for a week or so! lol
I also second sports jerseys or sweatshirts... my kids loves them!!!

My oldest ds is 12.
His big want item is a digital camera. I got him one on Thanksgiving from Target for $60..some kind of Kodak camera, it actually was delivered today and looks like a pretty simple but good one.
He is also getting a larger memory card for the camera.
He has asked for a football and some kind of football gloves, new Nerf gun (Barricade?), paint ball gun and supplies, Criss Angel magic trick stuff, books about sharks, Angry Bird shirt/figures/water bottle, camping and fishing supplies.
