Oh and for Cricut owners the drawers will hold your booklets nicely! I have quite a few cart booklets and fit them all in one drawer.
That is good to know!! I have quite a collection of them, as well |

Wouldn't you just know I've been hoarding a 15 slot shoe organizer just like these ones for "something great!" My SO has been trying to convince me to get rid of it for about six months lol. I am so glad you posted this
I made one using foam core board, we will see how that holds up. I did not however decorate mine like you did so its pretty plain and boring
I am amazed at how much I was able to fit in each drawer! It helps with those "junk" baskets of things that you have nowhere else to put.
Thank you so much for the amazing inspiration! |

oh please share pictures!! I'd love to see the construction of it.
I had thought about using the extra thick 1/2" foam core for the ends but wasn't sure what type of glue would be best since you would be gluing the cardboard sides to the foam portion of the foam core. I have some drawers that are holding at min 5lbs of wire and metal stuff too and I doubt it would hold up as well as the wood has though. (which is why I had Dad cut down my plywood ) |

Fantastic job - may need this idea at some point in the future. I wonder if may be there is some type of already made container that would fit in each cubby? Certainly not as cute as what you did and would not be as inexpensive as your DIY project.
What are the dimensions of your 'drawers', if you don't mind sharing?

I will add the sizes to my blog too but the overall exterior size of the drawers is 11.5" deep (long) X 5 3/4" tall X 4 3/8" wide.
A friend of mine is using some Cardboard sorting bins inside her cabinets to keep things organized. I checked the pricing and smallest size on them and they are about 1/2" too long for the cubby space. they are also only available by 100 qty and are $75. so if you have a friend to share them with and were each doing two 25 hole cabinets you would be set.
with them hanging out 1/2" I think it would still look OK since they will all still be flush (see image below, they hang out about 1/2" too).
these are not as deep as my drawers though and especially not since the front slopes down. they would do the job I think if you really can't swing making them. could probably look cute even if you did something like this with them.

yikes bonnie that's $160 for 50 of them! see this is where you get into the "might as well start looking for a library cabinet". that would be $260 for the cabinets and sorting bins. and it's neither pretty nor holds as much as making the one I shared
Honestly you could probably have Home Depot do all the cutting of the wood for that price. Or find someone on craigslist to cut to order. |

I found this company that also carries that size of cardboard bin. Seems to be a bit cheaper--think I will be seriously checking it out!
YIKES!! Their shipping is expensive, but still a bit cheaper than the place you linked. Off to see what else I can find!
ETA: This company looks to be a little cheaper. Shipping on these is killer.
Might be worth it to see if you can find them locally!
Also found some on e-bay. Just search for corrugated bins & look for the correct size. |

This may be another alternative (and I am not advocating buying from this company):
http://www.buyonlinenow.com/viewProduct.asp?SKU=SMD73390
These are very sturdy file pockets as we use them in our office and they get extremely heavy. You would have to cut the sides down and what I would do with portion that is trimmed off, is place them in the bottom of the pocket to make it more sturdy. They also expand and should fit nicely inside the cubby.
Finishing the drawer front could be done in a similar way that the OP did hers.
These wind up in our recycling bin when a file has been purged. I will take one home tonight and see how it works and report back.

I found these boxes that might work, too; they're rated for 200 lbs, crushproof, have lids, & are 10x5x4, so there'd be room to get your fingers into the cubby to slide them out if attaching the knobs isn't for you. They're sold in lots of 100 for $85, so you could go in on a bundle with somebody. HTH | |

Left side photo shows a full pocket and then one that I cut down; right side photo shows how the pocket (circled in blue) fits completely inside the cubby.
If you can get your hands on some of these that are headed to a recycling bin, this is the way to go!
Excuse the shoes! LOL |

BTT. Thank you again for sharing this. I have a "base" that I got years ago for about $3-4 and it is begging to be altered. I currently use it but it could be so much prettier. I am constantly looking for library card catalogs when I have a potential one sitting in my scraproom. Thanks for the inspiration. |

Yes if you can salvage a base somehow you can do this whole project for about $20! Less if you have some plywood scraps you can steal from someone
I just remembered a drawer pull idea that could save money and be really cute too. I contemplated using it myself. After drilling the single hole for the pull you can either staple or tie off to a washer insude the drawer, a piece of 6" ribbon folder in half. Pull through to front and tie in a knot.
If you are a color organized scrapbooker you can color coordinate the ribbon pulls on each drawer to match your supplies. |
