Framing a canvas

I've done a few canvases before, but want to make one as a shadow box. I'd love some ideas on how make a frame for the sides - you know, the back of the wooden frame where the canvas is stapled to it. This will be the front of the box and needs covering.

I've though of wide ribbon held in place with upholstery tacks, and pulling a timber picture frame apart and cutting it to fit, but would appreciate some other ideas.
