Okay, so I've asked for help before with Simple Stories stuff, I know. I got over the paper issues for the most part and made some cool layouts, but it's those darned squares and stuff with the quotes on them, or the journalling cards that I'm having a problem with. I'm SO attracted to the paper in SS collections, but I've learned my lesson not to buy the packs because I'm just lost with all these quotes and journalling cards that come with it.
Glitter Girl, I usually just journal right on my background paper, and I've seen you do that a lot too. What do you do when you've got a stack of big quotes that may not fit with your theme (ever), or big journalling cards? I've tried to put a stamped image on them for cards, but it just seems to come out wrong. HELP! |

Good question. I have the same problem. |
I am a child of the most high God. He has promised me a plan of hope and a future (Jer 29:11)
He is enthralled with my beauty (Ps 45:11)
He rejoices over me with singing (Ze 3:17)
He bestowed on me a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning (Is 61:3)
You see my beloved is mine and I am his. (SOS 2:16)
He can be yours too. Just ask. MT7:8

I don't know if this will be helpful or not but... I have found it very helpful to mentally strip things like this down to their basic elements. Don't think of them as journalling spots or tags but rather as paper with a certain shape, size and color. It frees your mind to use them in a greater variety of ways.
How about clipping several tags together as though they are a stack of papers that have to be kept together for some reason? How about inking those sayings so that only some of the letters show through? How about tucking them partially under other embellishments on your page?

Those are some good ideas. I had thought about tucking the quote away partially, but then I thought it looked a bit odd with words you can't quite read, you know? |

I use them for cards, so I journal on them or use the quotes on the front or inside. |

Don't all of the elements come 2-sided? Maybe if you try to keep them turned over and ignore the theme-ish quotes, they won't feel so limiting.
I agree not to think of them as journaling spots. Think of them as pieces of patterned paper that are pre-trimmed to a certain size. Use them as photo mats for 2x3s (or 5x7 with the 6x8 blocks).
A lot of them have a design that looks like a file tab or some other shape-cut that out and treat it like a die cut element.
Look at sketches or layouts in your bookmarks that include layered pp in various dimensions, and try to match up the SS elements to those layers for placement.

Aw heck-if you've got a great photo that's not busy and coordinates with the paper, enlarge it, give it a generous solid mat, and mount it on one of those 12x12 sheets of 4x3 cards without even cutting it up-make it your background. You could probably cover up Much of what you don't like, you still get the fabulous color palate, and you've used up all those "question mark" 4x3s in one fell swoop!

There's two sheets in the collection packs that are completely quotes and journaling spots on both sides, unfortunately. The ones that are plain, yeah it's easier to just use as a patterned paper bit. But a lot of the ones I'm stuck with are all lined and stuff. Or they have this big bold quotes that it looks a bit strange if there's letters peeking out from behind a photo/coloured image. Grrr, evil spots! Like I said, I learned my lesson not to buy the collection packs and these pieces in the future! |

That's a brilliant idea! I so want to do that now! Unfortunately, in my previous post of "what do I do with SS stuff" someone suggested cutting up all the elements for ease of use... so now everything's cut up into the bits. Bummer! Maybe I can piece them back together somehow on a backing sheet! |

LOL... Murphy's Law for scrapbooking, huh
I do that all the time, especially with SS-I use the plain white inserts from 12x12 albums as a background and cover it with pieces.

Aeryn, here is a LO with all the leftover polaroids from the Dear Lizzy paper- same concept though:
Corrie Jones - ephemera layout
Maybe you could try something like that. FWIW, I have finally learned that the quotes don't necessarily have to "go with" my pics KWIM? But she did such a good job of doing this...
Another thought would be to lightly paint over the offending quote and then put title on top of it so you can see the edges but not the original lettering |

Sometimes I cut then down even more. For instance I just used that cute summer line and there was a cute stitched cloud on one of the 4x3 journaling cards, so I just cut that cloud out and used it as an element on my page. I've also punched words from the quotes, or cut those down to make embellies for my page. |

Woohoo! Love the video Glitter Girl! I don't know why, but I never thought of cutting up the pieces like that, or being able to use just little bits. I think I got so stuck in the box and that it all had to be used "as is". I mean, I paid for it, I can do whatever I want with it, right?! Going to dig into what I have and see what I can come up with! |

I loved some of the ideas that Shimelle offered. Covering up words/images that don't fit, and even cutting that tag to add a word to make it fit. Who would have thought a fall collection could turn into a very cute layout of waterfalls?
Great Lesson this wk, Glitter Girl! I'm looking at my Simple Stories papers with new eyes.
