We have an indoor dog. But we do walks and I had no idea that the salt can burn their paw pads (we just got him last winter). I will make sure to wash it off and condition them. Thanks so much for the advice!

Jaredem, my parents used to raise chickens and always left the heat producing 'outputs' under the roosts till spring.

I'm going to be wintering my chickens in the basement of our renovation project this time. I've cut down on the numbers of chickens and yesterday we dismanted a few pens and pressure washed them prior to moving the pens to the other location. I'm also going to build shelving in the pens so the chickens will all be up on wire.

My husband just redid the outside cat's winter home. We had a warm outlet in the house a few weeks ago, so we had to call the electrician out. It turns out the outdoor space heater/extension cord setup we have for the outdoor cat had a short in it and it was all on the same breaker as some of the indoor outlets. Nice. So the electrician said "The cat's just going to have to be a little cold." He said he could not tell us whether it was the extension cord or the heater that had the short without spending a lot of time on it, so we just threw them both out.

My husband saw on the news that it was going to get into the 20s last night, so he went out and got a new outdoor space heater, new extension cord, and new soft-sided cat house for the cat. The house (it might actually be for small dogs?) sits on this huge floor pillow so he won't get cold from the concrete. Then he has a big block of wood that he sets the space heater on so it will direct the warm air toward the entrance of the house. He sets all this up in a little area that has a windbreak so the wind won't cause issues.

The cat totally knows what's going on when all this preparation starts up. He hops right into his house and is just as happy as he can be.

I don't understand why he won't just be an inside cat like the others if he likes all of this so much, but it is just not for him. He won't do it.

ETA: This whole setup is my husband's creation. I basically have nothing to do with it.

When I went to edit my signature, the "Edit Signature" title was spelled wrong. So that was distracting and I forgot what I wanted my new signature to be.

In the winter he always took a truck mud flap and attach it over the door to block out the wind.

What an awesome idea!!
