I'm thinking of selling a large glass knick-knack case in our living room and replacing it with the five-cube-wide Expedit.

I see it mentioned all the time here as the shelving unit of choice for holding albums, but when I looked up the specs, it said it had a 29 pound limit per shelf?!? I'm sure my albums weigh more than that! Looks like the whole thing is made of particleboard and fiberboard, too.

Have you all been happy with how yours have held up, especially with the weight of albums? Any bending or breaking or anything?

Thanks! I'd love to have my albums more accessible for my family to look through, but want to make sure I know what I'm getting into first!

Mines has held up very well I have 2-5x5, 1 4x4, 1 2x4, and a 2x2. My room is out where everyone seems to like to walk through. Not one shelf has buckled because of the weight of whats on it.

Mine has held up perfectly. Amazing considering the amount of paper that I have loaded onto many of the shelves.

I've had it about 5 years, I guess.

Not all 12x12 albums fit the interior shelves. Club Scrap fits. K&Co fit. Project Life does not fit. Neither does WRMK 3 ring binders, 12x12 (haven't tried the 8 1/2 x 11). American Crafts albums fit.

I keep all the albums that don't fit on the top of the Expedit.

I don't think I could bring myself to replace a real peice of furniture with the Expedit.

Oh - I'm SO glad to know (but sad to hear) that the WRMK binders don't fit the Expedit! Hmm, back to the drawing board.

Um, second question - anyone know of something like this that DOES fit WRMK binders?

I've had mine for several years and it still looks new.

My WRMK albums fit on my shelves perfectly. I have the 12x12 leather ones and can fit 4 on one shelf.

Wow...I didn't realize WRMK albums didn't fit. I was about to switch from AC to WRMK. Nevermind then!

But my expedit shelves have held up well. I had a 4x4 for a year before I moved and sold it. Now I have a 2x4 that has done really well. Just make sure you line things up when assembling.

Edit: Responded before I saw PP. So now I'm confused about WRMK fitting.

I have two. I've had them for years and they hold up fine.
I've got a lot of weight on some of the shelves.

I have a 4x4 for about five years and it has held up well.
I just moved it and had no "Wobblies" or anything.
I keep WRMK 12x12 albums on mine. They fit fine. I have a lot of different albums and I have not had a 12x12 not fit?

Mine has held up beautifully for over 10 years. And my WRMK 12x12 fit perfectly, four to a cube. Soon going to buy a new one for the family room upstairs, probably a 2x2, so the finished albums can live up there and give me more room for supplies downstairs!

I have 2 5x5's and 1 2x4 Expedits and they have held up very well - even through a move and frequent furniture re-arranging. And, as others have stated, my WRMK 12x12 albums fit perfectly in the cubbies, so don't let that stop you. Love mine, don't know what I would do without them.

The Expedit is a champ-multiple moves, had both for several years, and more than 29 lbs per shelf easy. I have the 4 by 4 in my scrapbook room and the 5 by 5 FULL of books in the formal living room.

I don't know why the WRMK albums don't fit in the Expedit. Mine fit perfectly! I LOVE my Expedit and am looking to purchase another ! I have the 5x5 and have some filled with the ITSO storage cubes from Target. They fit like a glove too.. Awesome !

I have four 2x4's, two 1x5's, and three 2x2's. I love them and they've all held up great. I store a lot of stuff on them. The 2x2's are perfect for our nightstands, and we just added the drawers and doors on them. They look great. I also have the WRMK albums on them and they fit fine. So far they are the only shelves I've found that will hold them without any of the album hanging off. I also can fit 4 albums per shelf.

I'm looking right at my WRMK albums lined up neatly on an Expedit cube. All the configurations (5x5, 4x4, 2x4, etc) have the exact same cube dimensions, so WRMK always fits.

Maybe the previous poster was thinking of the cropper hopper paper holders? Those only fit if you flip them on their sides or trim the plastic a bit. They do fit, it just takes a little modification. I believe the new version/line of CH paper holders does now better fit the expedit cubes; haven't seen them yet, but I do remember reading about it.

My WRMK albums are lined up very nicely on my Expedit.

My shelves have held up nicely. My cubes hold my albums, stacks of paper, full cropper hoppers, magazine holders full of magazines and books, etc.

I had my first 5 cubby expedit for nearly 8 years and three moves in which we disassembled and reassembled it. This final assembly finally did it in and one of the shelves wouldn't go in. So yes, I'd say it held up really well.

That said we just replaced it with the 4 cubby version and I love it and my husband loved it even more because now they make them so you don't have to glue in each of the pegs as you put it together. So I would imagine it wouldn't be as difficult to get apart if you did need to disassemble it and move it at some point. Overall it's well worth the money IMO!

I just recently purchased the 5x5 and my WRMK albums fit perfectly, 4 to a shelf like several other posters called out.

I don't have the longevity opinion cuz I have only had mine about a month but I have tons of stuff on the shelves and it seems really sturdy.

I am a project lifer. That's why I am taking so many pictures.....

most European made furniture is a "sandwich" including some kind of particle board. It is VERY strong. I've had my Billy bookcases (same material as the Expedite) for 20 years, loaded, and they are rock solid and no bending.

I have one 4X4 Expedit & two 2X4 Expedits. One of the 2X4 holds all of my PP & Cardstock in CH paper holders & it hasn't budged. IMO, they are a lot sturdier than even Ikea gives them credit for. As far as the WRMK albums not fitting, that's wrong. They fit perfectly in them. In fact, here is a picture of my WRMK albums inside my 4X4 Expedit:

I think they hold up well. I have 2 2 x 2s in my playroom (so they get lots of use) and they are great. (I actually didn't put the divider in the top, so there are two cubbies on the bottom and a long shelf above). I also got a 2 x 4 for my office and my WRMK and AC albums both fit.

Incidentally, my sister had a 5 x 5 in her old house for 5 years and had no issues. The people who bought her house liked it so much that they paid her to leave it there!

All of these are the black brown color, btw. My daughter has 2 2 x 2s in her room that are white, that get a little dirtier but otherwise have held up well for the two years we have had them.

I've had my 5 by 5 for several years and I have WRMK albums 12 by 12 and 8.5 by 11 in the first three rows. My only advice would be when you are putting it together, make sure that you don't hit the board to hard with the hammer. Mine has a boo boo on the side. I moved it so no one can see it. Thought about a big band-aid.

I have two and they have held up well. I have had the 5x5 for about 4.5 yrs. The 2x4 for about 4 yrs. I have moved them around the house. They hold up well. I swapped out the smaller one for the big one. The big one started out in my kids play area. Both are still in really good condition. My WRMK albums and CM albums fit. The only thing that doesn't, unless you snip them down a bit are the cropper hopper vertical paper storgage. My can be seen here

My WRMK 12 x 12 albums fit fine on my 4x4 Expedit. I have to slip them in perfectly vertically, but they fit.

I bought a 2x4 Expedit for my granddaughter and bought the darling baskets from Pottery Barn kids for in the cubbies. It is super cute and WAY cheaper than the PB shelving unit.

I have the 5x5 and it's now in its fifth home - disassembled and put back together each time. It's never been attached to the wall and really I should pop to Ikea and pick up a few replacement screws that have been lost over all those moves, but it's still holding up just fine!! Even though I dropped the entire thing during one of the moves... 'walking' it down from standing to laying on the floor and I completely misjudged one step down and the whole thing just crashed to the floor. Shelf was fine. My foot was not as happy, but it got over it.

I keep all my albums (and supplies) on mine - I use the AC 12x12 albums.

We have 3 of the 5x5 expedits in the lounge, with a desk attached at either end. They are holding up brilliantly with one very minor exception: where I keep whacking my QK Squeeze tool into a shelf (it now has a couple small dents on the surface). We have two small children who play in and around the Expedit and the only wear visible is from my bad aim.

It's a great unit!

I saw that you mentioned you wanted to put this in your living room. I actually purchased a large on for my family room to store books, DVD's, record albums and my scrap albums. While they hold alot! I am not sure I would purchase the expedit again for this space. The problem I have is the squares are rather deep and I find that I have to keep books pushed forward in the "cubes" so that they are seen. It is nice that I can put small photo frames in front of some books with no fear of it being near the edge. But from a decorating stand point the expedite can pose a problem. It is also a very modern design which may or may not fit with your decor.

Dancingfish, thanks! I'm actually happy to hear they're deep, though, since I'd mostly use it for scrapbooks and displaying our toy collection. Our "decor" is eclectic at best, so I'm not too worried about that.

Good to know though! I won't plan on using it for regular books. It does bother me when they get shoved way back and can't be seen.
