This was early this morning (a little before 2). 3 agents responded to the ground sensors about 7 miles west of Bisbee AZ along the border. It's an area with a very rough terrain, mountains, heavy brush.
Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie. He was 30 years old and leaves behind his wife and 2 small children. He was from Provo, Utah and moved to Arizona 4 years ago.
1 other agent was also shot (shot in the ankle and buttocks) and air lifted to University Medical Center in Tucson. A 3rd agent was also present and uninjured.
No suspects have been arrested. Very few details have been released at this point. There are a lot of questions that DHS have not answered. Agent Ivie was a part of the Naco Station which was re-named about 2 weeks ago to the Brian Terry Border Station. |

Here is a link. Yes, it's Fox. Sorry. NBC News doesn't have the story on their front page. CNN did for about an hour this morning, but not now.
2 US Border Agents Shot, 1 killed
Kelly, right now they only have Cochise County and FBI investigating. Homeland Security and ATF have not become involved at this point. Very little is being released (understandably). The questions being asked, and not answered yet, are whether the BP agents were armed (or with only beanbags), whether the murder weapons have been located or not and if there are any suspects.
I hope that this is not treated as a "bump in the road". I also wonder if information on this will be released prior to the debate tomorrow night. I doubt it. After all, the border is more secure than it has ever been (well, according to Napalitano and President Obama). |

No, thank you and thank you to your husband. I'm not sure how the southern border is in TX, but it is brutal here. Every time these guys have to respond to a ground sensor, they know that there's a chance they might not come back. I know that most of us in Arizona are thankful for the job these guys do. I can't imagine their frustrations with the catch-and-release mentality of those above them (specifically, Napalitano). Very difficult position to be in!
I will be really surprised if any details are released before the debate tomorrow night. I just don't see it happening. God forbid this may be brought up in the debate for President Obama to answer to. |

I cannot tell you how infuriated I get over this sort of thing.
First--only Fox is making a big deal about this. WHY???? Well, I suppose we all know why the other networks aren't, but it makes my blood boil!
And then, to see it tossed around so lightly here on this forum almost gives me ulcers. How many pages did we have on Romney's fake tan...but this has almost died already. It was inching far down the page when I caught it.

Kim- thanks for posting and putting a face on this heartbreaking story.
Nicole and Aslan-thank you to your family members for their selfless service to our country.
Elise-excellent post. Thank you for saying what I've been thinking all day. Between this and Ambassador Steven's murder by terrorists and the lack of truth and attention - from the media, the government, the American people and even the peas - has also got my blood boiling. To think that we're still sticking with the official "movie" story is terribly disingenuous.
The usual suspects have been suspiciously quiet tonight.... |

For those of you that depend on the news, you don't get to see our border and the areas these guys cover.
This is a section of the barrier between the US and Mexico. This would be the stretch that Agent Ivie would have patrolled. (This is Hereford, AZ about 3 miles from where Agent Ivie was murdered.)
Those are tags on most every flag (thousands of flags attached to the wall, for probably a mile or so). They say "I support American Border Patrol's efforts to secure our borders" and you sign the back. The rancher that owns the land that borders Mexico, has "pockets" along the fence that hold these tags for people to sign and attach.
This is the road that border patrol travels every day to check those in-ground sensors that go off, if they hear gunfire, and just to be a presense on the border. This road leads all the way up those mountains...unpaved. As you can see (well, for as far as you can see in this shot), there is one SUV on this road. That's it.
This is the road that Agent Ivie drove at night or went by horse in daylight (that's how they can best get into the mountains).
Now we wait to see if this murderer crossed south or if they are still in our state. We wait for someone, anyone, to provide answers. |

the border is more secure than it has ever been
That may or may not be so, but even if it is it doesn't say it is completely secure. I doubt that will ever happen. Unfortunately border patrol agents, just like any other law enforcement agents, face this possibility every time they go to work. His death is sad, as are all of them, but it is no one's fault except the person who shot him.
This is one big issue I completely disagree with Obama and every other president so far. I think the border policy should be step one foot over and shoot to kill. No exceptions. Which would still have very little effect in reducing the number of illegals. The only way I see to stop it is to stop all benefits. And I mean all. |

all officers do. as to 'fault'? I don't think that in this case - or even in the Libya situation.
I've lived out here for about 30 yrs and it hasn't been like this until recent yrs. In the 90's I drove to the border, parked on our side and walked over to shop. Didn't give it a second thought. In the past few yrs I wouldn't even drive as far south as Tucson.
Maybe it's just me but it seems that more LEOs around the country are being killed lately.
thx kim for posting his name and pic (and the other pics). Such a handsome young man.
btw - I heard that where they were shot was close to the Brain Terry memorial station.

This is a war zone and the guys and gals who patrol it are heroes in my book.
Do they ever catch the perpetrators in these situations to know if they are in drug/human trafficking or random people with guns just trying to get to this country?
One smacks of greed and the other of desperation, but there is never an excuse for killing.

What a handsome man!
I saw a blurb about this on the MSN homepage yesterday. It said something about an 'accident.' When I read the short story, I thought accident, my @ss!
The questions being asked, and not answered yet, are whether the BP agents were armed (or with only beanbags)
These men and women are sent out on patrol with out weapons, really? Why? That's absolutely shocking!
Also, what do you mean by beanbags? Surely not the obvious. After all, what are they going to do with beanbags? Play tag? |

After the El Paso/Juarez incident in TX (where the 15-year old boy was killed by Border Patrol after crossing the river and throwing large rocks at BP's head), Border Patrol (according to agents and to their Union) was instructed to use bean bag rounds first. Basically, stun them rather than kill them. It's a little bean bag filled with a bebe type ball that fits a revolver. When you fire, the bag breaks open and the bebes splatter. If they aren't stunned and are approaching or threatening...then the Berretta 96D (that's what they were using, not sure if it still is, though) comes out. Not all BP have "fake ammo". Brian Terry had bean bags and was killed by a Fast & Furious weapon. We don't know about Ivie, yet.
Great in theory...til you're standing on the border and a criminal is scared of being caught with drugs, smuggling humans or just "looking for a better life" and fires a semi-automatic assault weapon. That is when Border Patrol is in a deadly situation. |

Reuters is reporting 2 arrests in the death of Nicholas Ivie.
Reuter's Report
Cochise Cnty confirms that tracks were followed to the Mexican border, but has not confirmed the arrest. The FBI also will not confirm the arrests.
Evidence has been collected throughout today (and yesterday), but no information has been released.
There's a news conference (likely local only, but I don't know) tomorrow at 10am. Nick Ivie's family is expected to speak.
I'm hoping the FBI or Cochise County can confirm the arrests. Also, hoping that they have the right people and that the Mexican government isn't handing over "sitting ducks". It just surprises me that they can make arrests without evidence and support from the U.S. (where the crimes occured) within 48 hours of the murder, but can't track drug cartel murderers in their own states. I don't know...something just doesn't seem right with this arrest, but I sure hope my gut instincts are wrong!
In related news, there's a Border Conference going on in New Mexico that started today. Governors Jan Brewer (Arizona) and Susana Martinez (New Mexico) and a representative for Governor Perry are attending. California's Governor is not there and did not send a representative. Governors of 3 of the 5 Mexican border states are attending. The other 2 Mexican states are sending representatives for their Governors. |

Kim M - any updates on this? You've been very vocal about how this was brushed under the rug by the media, yet when it turns out that this was friendly fire, you're very quiet.
Sucks that those in this thread who blamed Obama for this can't do that now!

PHOENIX – The U.S. Border Patrol agent killed last week in a shooting in southern Arizona apparently opened fire on two fellow agents thinking they were armed smugglers and was killed when they returned fire, the head of the Border Patrol agents' union said.
The two sets of agents approached an area where a sensor had been activated early Tuesday from different directions early Tuesday and encountered each other in an area of heavy brush, National Border Patrol Council president George McCubbin said Sunday.
Agent Nicholas Ivie apparently opened fire first and wounded one of the other agents but was killed in the return fire.
"I don't know what it was he saw or heard that triggered this whole event," McCubbin said. "Unfortunately it resulted in his death and another agent injured."
Acting Cochise County Sheriff Rod Rothrock confirmed the scenario but would not say if Ivie was the first to shoot, saying that was up to the federal agencies involved.
The new details add to a FBI statement Friday that the shooting appeared to be a friendly fire incident that involved no one but the agents.
Sensors are set up in different areas along the U.S.-Mexico border to detect smugglers or illegal immigrants, with Border Patrol agents responding when they're set off. The shooting occurred in a rugged hilly area about five miles north of the border near Bisbee, Arizona, an area known for illegal trafficking.
McCubbin and Rothrock both said the two sets of agents knew the others were heading to the area on foot but apparently didn't know they were so close. McCubbin said he'd been briefed by the agency, while Rothrock's agency has been involved with the investigation.
"It was dark, very, very rugged terrain, and what they could see of each other was further obscured by the fact that there was brush and cacti and stuff like that between them," Rothrock said. "I have no doubt that these agents were in as heightened a state of alert as you can get due to the proximity to the border and the history of trafficking in that area."
Rothrock said that when the agents spotted each other in the dark, "they apparently took defensive postures, which was probably interpreted as aggressive postures. Like readying your weapons, for example."
Ivie, 30, died at the scene, and one of the other agents was wounded but has since been released from the hospital.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Border Patrol and other federal and local agencies flooded the area with personnel looking for who they believed were assailants who had attacked the agents.
"That was the initial reports from the beginning," McCubbin said. "That was the reason for the saturation manhunt there. They even had permission to fly into Mexico. They were seeking people out. What this was based on, we'd have to assume it was based on the initial statements given by the agents on the scene."
Two people suspected of being involved in the shooting were arrested by the Mexican government but were apparently not involved at all.
"They had a couple of people in custody but other than being in the area, there was no evidence putting them there at the scene," McCubbin said. "They could have been guides, they could have been scouts, and those type of folks typically go back and forth all the time anyway."
Rothrock said he believed the agents' actions were "appropriate and in accordance with their training had they, in fact, been engaging people involved in illegal activities. Unfortunately, they weren't engaging people involved in illegal activities, they were engaging each other."
Rothrock said a death investigation report will be sent to the Cochise County Attorney's Office for review as a matter of routine, but he doubted any legal action will be taken against the surviving agents.
A visitation was to be held in Sierra Vista, Arizona, on Sunday night for Ivie, who is survived by his wife and two young daughters. His funeral is set for Monday morning.
"It's happened and it's a horrible tragedy for the agents involved and their families and the agency," McCubbin said. "We can come up with some reasons as to how this happened but that doesn't fix anything. All we can send prayers to the families and all the agents involved that somehow they can find some peace with this someday."
Ivie's death marked the first fatal shooting of an agent since a deadly 2010 firefight with Mexican bandits that killed U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in December 2010 and spawned congressional probes of a botched government gun-smuggling investigation.

Maybe waiting until a full investigation was completed before jumping to conclusions would have been prudent. |

I will be really surprised if any details are released before the debate tomorrow night. I just don't see it happening. God forbid this may be brought up in the debate for President Obama to answer to.
It's really sad and disgusting that people like you and others on this thread tried to politicize this young man's unfortunate death before all the facts were in.
At least on this occasion, Governor Romney showed prudence and didn't go off half cocked.
