One of my students today, a young black woman and Obama supporter, told me before class that she felt that the press has historically been pretty "soft" on Obama. She felt that may have led to his less-than-stellar performance (my words but her idea) last night. She said Romney has been under the gun from the beginning -- from both the media and other Republican candidates during the primary -- and therefore was much better prepared for this type of event. Interesting.

What do you think?

It's kinda CW that the incumbent is often rusty - the challenger has been through convention debates. It's possible. Guess we will see at the foreign affairs debate.

I agree. The press has given him a pass for so long, he got soft. I honestly think he's SO sure he's going to win, that he doesn't have the fire he used to and he didn't prepare like he should have. In his spare time from running the free world, I mean

She sounds like a very astute young lady, to be forming such mature opinions. (I would say that even if I didn't agree with her ... I just mean bravo to her for thinking so deeply about politics at a young age).

I think your student is quite bright to be thinking it through like this.

I would tend to agree that the president (any president) can be used to being in a bit of a 'bubble' where they are rarely challenged. At a debate the system is set to try to make the two men on an even footing... something that a president rarely has with other people. I imagine that it could be disconcerting after four years of constantly being the most important person around (He even has his own band with his own theme song!).

It seems to be worse in the case of this president last night because he has always had a fairly easy time of it from the press. Think about it - when is the last time you can think of anyone directly confronting this president? All I can think of is Paul Ryan at the health care summit... and the president didn't handle that very well either. In previous administrations (of either party) the media would have hard hitting interviews and press conferences... not so much in the last four years.

I think your student was watching Fox news. My MIL told me the exact same thing this afternoon and she said she'd heard it on FOX, most specifically from McCain on FOX.

Exactly what I was going to say. My hubby came home and was telling me the same thing.
