Do you plan before you scrapbook or are you an as you go along kind of scrapper? I'm more of that latter ... although I think it might be easier?better?quicker? if I were more of the former. I usually start with an idea in mind and the basics (paper). But when I get going I am often grabbing things here and there to "try on" my page and then I end up having a complete disaster on my workstation. I swear the clean up process after a page can sometimes take me longer than creating the actual layout! I wish I could plan a bit better - pick out the stickers and embellies I want to use. But my creative mind doesn't always work that way and sometimes I just gotta follow it wherever it leads me (no matter how messy it gets!) Can you tell I'm writing this post just after one said disaster? LOL.

I'm so very "as-you-go"! I've never tried picking out embellishments and such ahead of time, though, so I don't know if I can work that way or not! It might be something fun to try. I am attracted to the idea of kits, but not so much one that I have to put together myself!

I'm a planner. Even when I sit down with a photo and just try to go with it, I inevitably end up on the computer and/or looking at my idea books for inspiration. But I tend to focus on planning the design or LO, not so much the papers, embellies, etc.

I tried the planning thing and it just didn't seem as much fun.

I am generally a planner. I need a vision of the LO before I can execute it. I'm not really that great at flying by the seat of my pants.

I have done a few albums that were pre planned, from start to finish, before I ever pulled out one sheet of paper. I did a heritage album that way (very narrow choice in papers and embellishment) and several alphabet albums.
But mostly it is much more of an "as I go along" scrapper even when I do use a sketch of some kind as my basic inspiration.

I plan, but the plan is find colors, find sketch and then make additional decisions as I go, not necessarily following the sketch or the planned color scheme.

Unless I have a project due that requires the use of a certain sketch then I am not a planner. I usually choose a photo and go from there. I'm like you, I end up pulling all sorts of stuff out. Lately I have been pulling my paper and then finding a photo to go with that. I have several fun paper packs that I purchased over the summer so I have been trying to use those up. I have a new resolve not to hoard my favorites until I no longer know why they are favorites. It's like I have been set free. I'm having so much fun using up all my favorite supplies! I always thought it would be painful, lol!
With that said I do really prefer weeks when I have a certain sketch that I need to use because it gives me a starting point and that makes it easier to me.
|Posted: 10/6/2012 12:55:43 AM|
As I go along, definitely. I've tried repeatedly to use sketches, but I just . . . can't.

I'm 50/50. After the event, I jot down the journaling (noting colors worn, background, people, places, details, etc). I pull together a kit of supplies based on the event (papers, embellies, sticker alphas, etc). When the photos come back, I wing it with what I've already selected for the kit. I do keep a comp book full of ideas and rough sketches for when my mojo gets stuck. I scrap in spurts: no mojo for weeks and then I'll kick out a doezn LOs in a week or two. Several times a year, I'll make a month a LOAD (layout a day) challenge to myself.

I have to have a plan or I get overwhelmed and give up. A lot of the time I deviate from the plan as I go, but when I start, I need to have a plan to jump off with.

|Posted: 10/6/2012 1:37:04 PM|A little of both. I have to have an idea or sketch for my page to start. But, then I am an as I go, digging through my stuff looking for the "right" embellishments or something. I know of that disaster you speak of Lynn. It is at my house too.
Now that I'm here, I have nothing clever to say!

|Posted: 10/6/2012 1:51:46 PM|I usually start off with my photos, pick papers and draw or design a sketch. Sometimes I use a sketch from a book or sketch site, but I tend to use my own more, to fit the photos I have.
Once I have the general LO planned then I add titles, embellies, etc as I go from there. Sometimes it looks like the LO I planned, sometimes not

As an admirer of your work, Lynn, I'd say that whatever you are doing is working. I sometimes start with a plan but end up deviating way off course. I like the idea of just pulling a few products and challenging myself to just use those. Truthfully, I'm not all that disciplined and usually end up with a huge mess.

As I go. I pull all sorts of paper, embellishments and alphas and then just put them away when I'm done. Sometimes my desk is many layers deep, but that's part of the fun of my creative proceeds though. I do clean up after each layout though.
|Posted: 10/6/2012 10:14:40 PM|
Definitely an as-you-go scrapper. I have to "try out" different embellishments and placements before I can commit to adhering it all down.
My desk always ends up a total mess, too.

95% as I go scrapper. Occasionally, I'll draw a sketch or think of some brilliant idea I want to try beforehand. I should do sketches more often cuz they usually result in my best work.

When I scrap as I go I end up changing it over and over again because the greener grass idea always seems better.
I'd rather go with a plan but I haven't fully been able to get committed to that just yet, I'm getting better at it though.

I am like you. I create as I go along. I start with the pictures, pull papers and embellishments that might go with it, but my layout develops as I work through it.
And yes, I can relate to the disaster area that comes from scrapping. I have one like that at the moment, but since my project isn't quite finished, it won't be cleaned up till the project is done.

I enjoy planning my Los and books and it actually gives me more freedom to create the way I want to create by doing this. I can create the pieces that will work well together to tell my story when I plan. I'll always be a planner, noticed when I just sit and create it takes me much longer to create. When I prepare and sketch and give thought to me designs, I feel more empowered to convey my talent on my LOs.

|Posted: 10/7/2012 8:34:55 AM|I'm a planner all the way. I very seldom start a page without a sketch or own drawing of where I'm heading.
I do deviate as I go along, pulling a product or adding a technique not initailly planned, but the basic design stays.
I'm an 'A' type personality, so winging it just doesn't work for me. Besides, I can sit in the lounge with the family planning pages in the evenings. DH complains when I'm at my desk all the time, so it works for us both (thank goodness).

Usually, I scrapbook as I go along, but lately, I'm trying to select everything for a LO just before I begin, to save time searching for products in the process, and this seems to work for me, for now. I like sketches, but rarely use them. I wish I could do page kits, but that method doesn't work with my creative process either.

|Posted: 10/7/2012 7:45:16 PM|I'm totally a planner and I almost always use a sketch from an idea book. So first I chose pictures, then papers, then a sketch, then a few basic embellishments. Once I'm done, I may go back to my stash for those last few detail embellies. I almost never deviate from this. I can't sketch my own ideas, I'm artisicly challenged, so the idea of "just winging it" gives me the total willies.
|Posted: 10/7/2012 9:30:36 PM|
As you go. In fact I think I'm weird I'm not even into looking for inspiration. I just do my own thing. Even the glitter girl or start to finish videos don't inspire me it overwhelms me.
|Posted: 10/7/2012 9:58:35 PM|
I think I'm a combination of the two. I plan before I start the page, sometimes drawing a sketch or having some idea in mind of what I want to do. But it evolves from there as I go. So it never ends up much like my original plan at all.

I sketch out se ideas, but then I don't plan on what paper, embellishments, or photos until I actually sit down to work on it. So I am finding that when I attend crops I bring most everything except the kitchen sink. It equals to my huge travel case, my cameo and 2 extra paper bins. I'm attending a crop this weekend so hope I don't bring too much.
