I don't get why people mind teenagers having a bit of harmless fun.

I prefer to encourage teens to have innocent fun. It doesn't mean they aren't going to engage in anything sinister later on, but heck, they're dressing up and going around with friends for candy. I don't see the harm if they're polite, not bothering the younger kids on the route, etc.

OK. Newbie. This is how it works. If your post consists of 80% sanity, 10% stupidity and 10% all kinds of crazy, we immediately focus on the 20% b/c it discredits the 80%.

When DD and DS were teens, they dressed up and went as part of a group, usually with younger kids too.

As long as they're in costumes and behaving, age is not a factor

I give out candy to dressed up adults with their kids

I'm another one in the "as long as they're dressed up and behaving" camp. I'm a sophomore in college, and we're "trick or treating" around the dorm building this year!

Any age that dresses up and puts forth the effort is fine by me. My son stopped on his own when he was 15, but not due to any rule by us.

No age limit at our house, we welcome them all We just wish we would get more T or T'ers - our street is very poorly lite so we only get a small handful

Our dogs LOVE seeing all the kids when they come to the door.

I know some areas have a defined age, but I let my kids trick or treat until they didn't want to anymore. I trick or treated well into junior high. i don't believe in having an age limit on a holiday celebration like Halloween. I'm not too stingy to hold back candy to everyone under a certain age. Besides, I can't tell how old kids are - my neighbor's kids have looked like adults since elementary school.

Trick or treating should be allowed for anyone who wants to.

My choice is to not take it personally - people have opinions. Particularly people here.-Peabay 12/29/11

Loved all the responses! I've always welcomed anyone who came to our house as well. My child is on the taller side so I was concerned he might get grief when TOTing. Thanks for the input!

I give candy to anybody who comes to the door. If teenagers want to hang onto their childhood for one more day then power to them. I'd rather they were T&Ting then gathering to get into trouble.

I told my son last year that this would be his last year. He's in sixth grade. But I've decided to let him go out as long as he wants (in costume with manners!) because we push them to grow up so fast I think being a kid on Halloween is one thing I'll let them decide when to stop.

People constantly rail about kids growing up too fast,

That thought just crossed my mind as I came back to this thread.

It's such a nice, fun activity. Why limit it to a certain age, and for some people, such a young age?

I'm very glad to live in an area where it's perfectly acceptable for kids of any age to TorT.

As long as the trick or treater puts reasonable effort into a costume and is polite (aka say thank you, don't just mumble or worse, turn away), i think it's fine to trick or treat through the teens. Much better than other things they could be doing.

So basically eighteen IMO. I don't get telling tweens and teens they are too old to trick or treat. As long as they are well behaved, I don't see why not. Just seems silly to me.

I went trick or treating through 11th grade. I did get a few people tell me that they thought I was too old even though I was in costume and was polite. I shot back, well I could be out egging your car or toilet papering a house or better yet, I could be getting pregnant right now. That usually shut them up.

I just love those teens nowadays who go around with a hoodie pulled up and put black paste under their eyes and have a pillowcase for their treat bag and are rude and pushing little kids out of the way. On the other hand, there are babies who can't even walk whose parents are pushing them in the stroller and walk up to a door to collect candy 'for the baby'. Yeah, like the baby is going to eat that candy.

The grown folks dress up and go out to bars or closed off streets just for this type of carousing so I suppose it is ok for teens to dress up and go door to door. It's good for the teens to participate in a friendly neighborhood activitiy.

After 6th grade my kids are not allowed to trick or treat. It's different in every area. Where I live, kids going trick or treating past that age are generally quite obnoxious or make little to no effort with their costumes. It's not the cool thing to do. So we don't get a lot of older kids.

ETA: I guess I read the question wrong. I thought it was asking about your own kids. I don't care what other people do and I will give candy to whoever.

In theory, I think all kids can go, if polite and in costume.

However... I only have so much money. Candy is expensive, especially the good stuff like chocolate bars. I like to make up little treat bags and can only afford to make about 100. I'd rather them go to the little kids who are old enough to eat them (no babies or young toddlers) and not too old to be able to afford to go buy candy themselves or have other options for activities on Halloween (teenagers who could be working and can have parties). Maybe that makes me a Scrooge. I wish I could afford more. But, that's how it is.

I love how many of the Peas welcome TOT'ers of all ages...so cool!

If you come to my house in costume, you get candy. I love the groups of older teens that come. They usually have the best costumes and give me the most laughs.

My DD went at 16 for the last time and I am pretty sure my son who is 15 next month still wants to go this year.

I think through Jr High is about right for our family. My oldest was 14 the last time he went. After that, he usually went to a Halloween party at Church. The youth group hands out candy from a house on church property and then they hang out and play games.

My youngest is 11. He still enjoys trick or treating and is so small and baby faced that no one would ever think him too old. I hope we'll have a couple more years!

I went all through high school and so did my dsd and they are some of my happiest memories. I'm happy giving candy to anyone who comes to my door, as long as they make an effort to be polite. I still give candy to those who aren't as polite--I'm just not as happy about it.

We don't have Halloween in Australia. Over the past few years some kids have been dressing up, but it's pretty rare. But from what I've seen on TV shows it looks like fun.

I don't care if you're 8 or 80. Halloween is about fun. And if you're respectful and having fun, I say more power to you.
ITA with Kiki. Why does it have to be only for kids? If we had it here, it wouldn't matter to me how old a person was. If they want to dress up and "trick or treat" I say good on them for getting into the spirit of it all. I know I would.

But then, thankfully, I never did totally grow up, and I never intend too. Life's too short not to have some silly fun now and then.

If ever a day comes when I'm too stingy to give someone a piece of candy, I hope my husband will lock me in the basement for Halloween. I agree with the people who said that if someone puts on a costume and comes trick or treating, they can have candy from us. I might give the side eye to 43 yo Mr. Incredible but if he's going to all of that effort for a free kit kat, have at it.

We buy a lot of candy and will give it out to anyone, of any age.

If they are respectful and have a great costume they get a little more.

If they are without a costume, rudely pushing other kids, or just being snots, then they get one piece of the junky stuff. (tootsie rolls, dum dums, etc.)

I have no problems with infants and grown ups (although I'm rolling my eyes on the inside at some of them). We are "the more the merrier" type of people and love seeing them all having fun. That's the reason we're throwing a big party for our friends, family, and neighbors this year.

This is Texas. We don't have regular seasons here. We have Summer 1, Summer 2, Summer 3 and January.

No age limits!! I think my DS went until he was around 13, but kept TOT'ing at our churches Trunk or Treat all the way through high school. As a matter of fact, even college students and adults come by the line at our Trunk or Treat at church. As long as you are in costume, you are good to go!
