Is it possible that sometimes it's more satisfying to have the supplies? We read all the time about how we keep buying, we have tons of 6x6 paper pads and unopened kits, we have more than what we need, etc. It got me wondering if buying and having the paper and embellishments and stamps is just as fun as having a finished layout or mini album. Some of us, me included, hold onto supplies that we love for too long in anticipation for those perfect pictures. It got me wondering what I value more - scrapped photos and memories or shopping for and having lots of supplies. Logically, I'd all say layouts but that doesn't explain why I still have an untouched BG Blush collection from 2006. Am I afraid that once I use those supplies I won't have those supplies anymore? Is that crazy? Is it just that I want to have my cake and eat it too?

Please share your thoughts even if they're rambling like mine. I'm really trying to figure out why I'm not scrapping as much as I'd like to.

I did that 'thinking' a few years ago. I know for me in order to get lots of scrapping done, I must have 'less' product and 'less' computer time. Sounds like I am rambling too.

GREAT post. I like topics like this that make you 'think'...

This makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe I need to spend less time thinking and work on realizing that it's a question of how I choose to spend my time and what I want to get out of it. And just cut that paper!!!

And thank you. Sometimes it just feels good to know that you're not the only one that has some odd thinking about something that should be pretty simple.

I see where you're coming from, and have wondered the same thing! But for every piece of pretty paper I buy, there's a future intended layout in my mind. (Kind of like how I buy lots of educational books - even if I never read them, the *intention* was there!)

With that in mind, purging can actually be psychologically painful, because getting rid of the paper (or whatever) is like saying I've given up on doing that layout!

So yes, I love owning the pretty stuff (and REALLY love shopping for it!!!), but I don't think I'd have a collection at all if I didn't intend to ever scrapbook again. That's my long-winded way of saying that the layout is the ultimate goal for me, and so more satisfying, even if (as Janet said) not as easy as shopping or spending time on here!

I think years ago I would get caught up in the thrill of a crisp new collection. I'd want whatever pics I used with those papers to be perfect for it. By the time I was ready to use it, I no longer cared about the paper. Now I'm more of a live in the moment scrapper. I USE it, instead of hoarding it. Like Midway, I knew the Fair was about to be in town so it was perfect timing. It came in the mail last week, I went to the Fair and this weekend I'll be using it to scrap those pics.
So while I do love shopping for new product I don't let it go to waste on my shelves anymore. There's always something to scrap!

Good question. I am sure I get more pleasure out of completed layouts than out of seeing my stash. And I do in fact produce a fair amount of completed projects.

Nevertheless, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy my stash. I particularly enjoy it when it fits in the allotted space. I like thumbing through a box of embellishments,or a dish filled with shiny things, when they are all there laid out like candy. I don't like thumbing through a huge pile that is overflowing and just seems like clutter. I would not be happy having shopping layout by layout, having only enough to do what is immediately in front of me. And I would not collect if I did not produce. I like the combination.

That is exactly what got me to thinking about this. I haven't been scrapping as much as I'd like lately but the desire to add to my stash is still there. So I got to thinking whether I wanted to shop or scrap.

as much as i enjoy a finished project, there are some supplies that i love owning because they stand the test of time. supplies that are not ultra trendy and are quality made.

Absolutely, yes. One of the reasons why scrapbooking is so fun for me is the product. Sure one can preserve a memory without investing in anything more than cardstock, glue and scissors.

But part of the fun for me, is purchasing the MATERIAL that makes my layout that much more interesting and creative.

I love finishing layouts!

Been really good about buying what I need or buying non-consumables like dies and punches.

There is a chicken/farm paper pack at Ms that I want so badly but I didn't buy it even with the 50% coupon. Now I'm sort of unhappy about it but proud of myself at the same time. I'll just have to wait until I get my vacation, Ft McCoy trip, and my son's birthday done.

...I also have my twin DGDs' quilts to finish--it is getting cold up here in Minnesota!

No, finished albums are so satisfying that they do not even compare to having all the supplies I have. I would like nothing better than to have all completed albums and be able to go out and select things for any new photos I get.

I don't know if it's the actual supplies I love or the promise they hold. I too only buy things with a purpose in mind. And I can envision the layout I'll be making in my head....and somewhere between purchasing the supplies and actually making the layout, a disconnect occurs. Like I know that I'll never be able to recreate that image and I'll be disappointed, so why even bother? I go through phases like that (am right now, haven't scrapped in months!). Then I'll snap out of it and get 60 layouts done in a month. But sometimes those supplies can be a hindrance and not a help...

Well, I wouldn't say supplies are MORE satisfying than a finished layout but definitely AS satisfying. I LOVE supplies....scrapbook supplies, art supplies, office supplies, school supplies....even as a child I "collected" supplies. I might even be on the edge of the "my precious" stage....LOL. I didn't produce a single layout for about 3 years and STILL bought supplies. So, I too collect even if I don't produce. Luckily I am also a huge memory keeper. I look through my photos all.the.time. even if they aren't in an album. So, I do enjoy making the layouts just as much.

I love buying supplies and sometimes I become so attached to a piece of paper I won't want to cut it up because then it's gone. I love buying supplies for the possibilities that they hold. One of the reasons that I think we may buy more than we scrap is best said above.

All that being said, I still have to say a completed project is much more satisfying. Every LO or Mini I complete is a major accomplishment to me.

For me, there is a perfect balance: too much stuff and my creativity suffers; I feel paralyzed by too many choices and not being able to remember what I have. Too little stuff and I always feel like my layouts lack that last little "finishing touch" that takes them from hum-drum to perfect.

I am also pretty frugal and feel guilty when I buy more and more and more when I have perfectly good supplies sitting at home. Yet I always want the latest and greatest! So I justify some of my shopping by completing layouts. When I start to feel like I have too much stuff I put myself on a spending freeze until I complete XXX numbers of layouts.

I really appreciate when you peas say it better than I can.

I have felt the very same way many times. I took a long break from scrapping and now that I'm back to it I don't feel the same confidence in my scrapping abilities that I used to have so I hesitate. I'm afraid I'll be disappointed with what I make.
I'm amazed at the thought of doing 60 layouts in a month! That's just...wow...amazing.

I love buying supplies and sometimes I become so attached to a piece of paper I won't want to cut it up because then it's gone.

I'm doing that very thing with a Miss Caroline 6x6 paper pad and my Dear Lizzy Neapolitan supplies. It's all so cute! I don't feel that I'm actively making the choice to keep the pad intact but the fact is that I could have a sweet little mini album with pics of my girls in a matter of hours using that pad if only I'd get started.

I am also pretty frugal and feel guilty when I buy more and more and more when I have perfectly good supplies sitting at home.

That's one of my issues, too. I feel guilty about buying things I don't need even though it's not a financial issue for me. It's more about trying to live a simple, uncluttered life.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, peas. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that's over thinking this whole scrapbooking thing.

I feel NO guilt when I use the supplies I buy, but definitely a twinge of it if i've been in a shopping frenzy and not creating!

Just to add....if we don't shop and support our LSS regularly, there won't be anymore of them!! (Figured I had to make us all feel better and less guilty for shopping somehow!!)

Well, I have a lot of supplies, but I get more excited about my finished LOs, rather than my supplies. I scrapped almost daily and I have no guilt about taking my time to use some of my supplies. They will get used eventually.

I think there is more satisfaction in the layout. I can make good, and maybe even great layouts with supplies I may not even "love" But the memories are there to enjoy over and over.

For me it's not about the supplies but the memories and getting to see the photos. Maybe it would be different if I had the budget to create a stash like some of you have, but for me at this time I like the completed layout.

Only in ONE instance: Halloween supplies.

It makes me SO happy to look in my Halloween box, see all the supplies, and just HAVE them. The cards I make, yes, I love them. The scrapbook pages too, awesome. But if I never, EVER used anything in my box I'd still be just as happy. I was raised by collectors. Actual collectors that believed my action figures should be in the box and shouldn't be played with, so with "high value" supplies like my beloved Halloween stuff I'd be just as happy never using any of it.

I'm with RnKmom above, but have to agree with Janet as well. Shopping is way easier than scrapping! Peaing is way easier, too! I finished a few LOs last week & I love the mental exercise of it all, the planning, gathering and designing. So, I am really going to try to stick with it again.

Really agree with all those that have said, the more they have, the harder it is to scrap! Am going to really try to use up my stash...although that MME new collection and that new Webster's really caught my eye!

oh my precious! I always loved collecting papers and stickers and markers and such from the time I was a kid, so a big part of it is the "stuff" for me, but I really like getting LO's done too, even though they never quite live up to the ideas in my head.

I think I like everything about scrapbooking.

maybe having the supplies is satisfying for a short time...but too many times I've let my supplies sit there and soon it's not current, or I forget about it. I'm 100% happier with a finished layout that uses the supplies, tells the story, and I can enjoy it now and forevermore!

I think it's fear and guilt more than satisfaction. I think we play the joneses trap to much and think our layouts/picture are not cut to the expensive/perfect paper. We also feel guilty to splurge and we feel that because we splurge in our selves we better know what we are doing.
I fell in that trap for years! I was able to change things because I had to move 4 times in less than 4 years. My space was reduced from a really big room to a corner. I had to change my habits.
I now purge and regroup stuff constantly. Since Jan of 2012 I only buy what I love and it's only the good brands. As soon as I get them I try to use them in my next layout so I loose that "the precious" state of mind. Once I cut a paper from the collection or use a sticker I loose the enchantment.
Another thing that I learned, I think from Shimmelle is to not buy until you used the ones you have. I get rid of old stuff (I KNOW in my heart I don't like therefore I won't use) to make space for new one.

I don't give a hoot about how much Jones, Smith, or anyone has. I simply LOVE my scrappy stuff. Jones could have 10 times more than I do, but I may not like all of Jones' stuff. I love my stuff, whether stored in original packaging or on layouts in albums. And it's not just my stuff I love, but it's like I soak up all the scrappy vibes when walking through an LSS.

Yes! I'm a collector. I love stuff. I love trends. I love following what's new and what's hot. If it weren't papercrafting goods, it would be - and has been in the past - something else. I love creating with what I have; that's like a bonus. I've given into the fact that I'm a collector. I am not, however, a hoarder - I purge regularly.
