Thought I would start a thread where we can post about Kiwi Lane designs and their products all in one place. Hopefully peas that use these templates will come on in here and post.
First I wanted to share that Kiwi Lane has a giveaway this month...$50 dollars to use on their site. All you have to do is post a photo of something you made on their facebook.
Details here - Kiwi Lane Giveaway
Anyone made anything pretty lately with their templates? |

I also just got 5 different sets of the templates at the CKC Friday in Bellevue. Boy, what a sales pitch and I honestly could not pull out my credit card fast enough.
So excited to use them and I will be sure to check them out on facebook.

I have a few templates I got awhile ago and I really love them. I made this layout: Motley Crew Layout
I have this one on my blog, where I used the template to mask off for inking: masking with Kiwi Lane

Kiwi fan checking in! I made a double page layout last night. I cheated a little and followed the template use for one of the layouts in the gallery. I did not have the same paper and that's what takes me so long! Trying to pick out the right papers! It turned out beautifully! I wish I could post it but I don't know how to connect my camera thingy to the computer and my scanner is broke. Oh well. I'll go see if I can copy and post the layout I sort of lifted using the templates!

http://m.flickr.com/photos/kiwilane/7037162667/in/set-72157629475259988/lightbox/
In case that doesn't take you directly to the picture, it's picture #36. Just keep paging forward. I don't know how to copy a link to where you can just click on it from here. I tried to save it to my pictures so I could upload from photobucket, but that didn't work either.
I used some old Daisy D paper from a Christmas line, I don't remember the name, but it brought these old photos from 1987 to life! I also used some stickers, Silver Stickles, a Chipboard Christmas Title and some mini tags. So wish I could post it! It has a lot of layering which really makes it look good!

I didn't get to scrap at all this weekend. I had big plans and life got in the way. I am hoping to get a chance to play this week.
Love the layouts Akihasmomma! Thanks for sharing those.
Kstpeter - get to take any photos our your UK trip? Even though it was business.
Jen1021 - I didn't think I would need the photo mats but I love having them to plan a layout.
Laurelleaves - They got me too at the scrapbook expo this past June! They are so passionate about their product, they hook you.
Scrappycass - Please show us what you make when you get the chance to play!
SCraplizard - Your pages sounds so pretty. Don't you love using up old paper stash?
Dalia - Good luck applying for the team! And I agree I don't think they are old fashioned either...and the pages just pop! |

Jet lag hit me today and I ednded up on the couch watching DVR'd episodes of the Voice.
Yes, I was able to visit Windsor Castle and take some pics for scrappy goodness. My company offices are at Pinewood Studios, so pics were strictly forbidden. I was thinking of googling some images so I can scrap the memory...thoughts? I've done this once before, when I attended saw JK Rowling at Carnegie Hall where no pnotos were allowed. |

I have been very intrigued about these... and I love the layouts you all have posted. But my issue is that I {still} have difficulty matching papers together, so I would have a hard time with the system. I guess if I used a collection, then the Kiwi Lane frames could be very helpful in getting some layouts done... |

Nancy, I struggle too. I think it's because we are probably perfectionists and want our layouts to be perfect like Kiwi Lane's!!! I watched the videos. I still had trouble. Finally, I gathered up a paperline I was using and brought it to my PC and S-L-O-W-L-Y went throught the newest video with my papers in hand. Made all the difference in the world. I will say that I did have to do 2 of my accessorie embellishments over in a different pattern to really make them pop, but now I have the general idea.
I think the more I work with the picking out paper thing, the more accustomed I will become to it. I will say that it is easier using paper from the same line. Usually I have enough of that laying around!
But, can you imagine spending all that time picking out paper AND having to design, lift, follow a sketch, guess size, cut out from a die cut machine (after you've spent an hour looking for the right die cut!), etc. etc.? After the long process of choosing the paper, the rest is a breeze and I have my stuff cut out in 10 mins. LOVE THAT!
I'm going with the idea that picking out the paper will get easier. I know it will. In the meantime, I'm thoroughly enjoying the process of putting my templates on paper and cutting!!

Dalia, you would become a member of my DT if I were a KLD owner!!! Your layouts are fabulous and you know what I really like about them? You sell the product by using the templates, but you also use embellishments which all of us have in our stash and need to use! I think your layouts would be convincing to new comers to KLD that want to use their embellishment stash plus the templates. (I'm not very good with words, but I think you know what I mean). I guess the variety is what I'm getting at. Your layouts appeal to a wider base of customers.

NANCY - We should see what black Friday holds...maybe they will have a sale. (Fingers crossed)
I would look at the borders http://kiwilane.com/templates/borders.html and see which set first jumps out at you. I think if you want to just dip your toe in...get one border set and one set of accessories to see if you like it.
My favorite border set is Madison Avenue (looks like brackets) and the sweetheart/tiny sweetheart accessories sets give a nice variety in one (arrow, flower, heart, bracket) |

I say the same as Slyn11 and Dalia. My first border purchase was Madsion Ave and the scallops. The mistake I made was not buying an accessory set and a tiny accessory set. Point being, you can layer with those. Two borders would give you a layering effect for the "framing" part. I would go with maybe Madison Ave, the scallops or Cascade Trails which creates a wonderful border on the Madison. Depending on what you're working on, I would go with the Sweetheart. If you're doing Christmas or planning winter photos, go with something like that.
I finished up another beautiful layout last night. I used some paper from a kit club years ago that made all their own. I can't remember the name, but they are out of business now. I so wish I could post the layout! I used borders, Christmas accessories and tiny Christmas accessories and did the diagonal thing with the rest of my embellies like Shimelle does. It is very eye catching! It's a cute little pic of my son when he was about 2 yo with a Santa hat on. He's 27 now!

So tonight I made a layout Kiwi Lane style, I used my CM wavy trimmer to cut papers. But I found double sided papers that have words on one side are tricky. When I cut the paper, the one patterned side was ok, but when I flipped it to use the other side {that had words} on the other page of my layout, the words were upside down! So I had to play around a little more with it.
And you know, those videos that you pointed me to where the KL ladies discussed choosing papers for a layout/kit was extremely helpful. |

I am just finishing up working for the day and hope to get at least one layout done this evening before sitting down for a movie with the family.
I only have one border set, too, but I made a few with cardstock by just eyeballing the lines in the online catalog, so I have been able to play a bit until I build up my stock of templates.
Now I just have to decide which pictures I want to scrap first!
I'm really, really hoping the KLD has a sale for small business Saturday! |

I would say the plastic is about as thick as one of those binders - the non stiff single subject ones or maybe a milk carton all flattened out. |

slyn, I noticed in your layout prep photo that you have some larger clear templates with a black border...
what are those? they look like larger rectangle shapes for layers? I like the look of your design!
I have done something similar on a few of my layouts - I will use a sketch from one of my CTMH design books and incorporate my KLD templates into it for a bit of variety. Plus, I don't have a stock of the templates yet (especially the photo and mat ones), so I'm not able to lay out my entire design and using a CTMH sketch has helped me with a basic photo placement idea... |

So I scrapped yesterday, and here is my review on the Kiwi Lane products. First, they are great for planning a layout. I really like that you can see thru the templates. It is definitely a fantastic way to use papers. I like the general idea of "framing" too. I really like the looks of the finished layouts, particularly having more than one photo on a page.
Tracing and cutting the gentle curves and even the brackets is not too bad.
But....hand cutting scallops, except the biggest ones, is not so great. Likewise for hand cutting circles, flowers, hearts etc. It is no easier now than it was 15 years ago when I was tracing CM templates! That is why we were all wanting a circle cutter, and later the electronic cutters. I can see using the templates to plan out a page, but I would rather use my Cuttle Bug/Sizzix, Spellbinders dies or my Cricut to actually cut circles, flowers, hearts and scalloped borders instead of tracing and cutting by hand. |

@Sophikins - glad you enjoyed your templates. I agree they do work well for layout planning. As far as cutting I think it varies by person. I am really good at handcutting the shapes and I find the act of doing it kind of comforting, but I know many people would rather use a punch or die.
I never used CM templates back in the day, I've always had a die cutters and punches, but for me I don't find manual cutting any slower than diecutting. Once I've set up my cutting mat, pulled up my image and hit the cut button, I could have just done it by hand. I love not dragging out all my heavy machinery. I guess I am lazy! LOL
But again I think it just depends on individual taste and work style. It is kind of like how some people still like to hand embroider even though they make embroidery machines now.
Thanks for sharing your review. I am sure it will be helpful for others thinking about these templates.
@Kstpeter - The clear templates in my picture are by Pages by Design. Do you remember that company? They went out of business a few years back. I have the full set of their templates. They mainly made basic geometric shapes in various sizes to help you design layouts. I barely used them until I got my KLD templates. They work perfectly together.
I also use my Hot off the Press shape templates with my KLD ones too. They are the kind where all the shapes are on one sheet and you trace around the design you want. Not as good for layout planning as the separated templates are. So I made dummy shapes from those HOTP templates. I traced out all their shapes on cheap cardstock, labelled them and I use them while designing. Then when I need to cut that shape I refer to the label and pull out the correct template sheet.
Here's what my completed layout from that design photo I pictured earlier looks like.
